Ford, DC PW.Williams 1989. karst geomorphology and hydrology. London UnwinHyman. karst geomorphology Oxford Basil Blackwell. White, WB 1988.
http://www.gcrio.org/geo/karst.html
NAME: Karst activity Karst can be either a sink or a source of CO , for the karst process is part of the global carbon cycle in which carbon is exchanged between the atmosphere, surface and underground water and carbonate minerals. Dissolution of carbonates, which is enhanced by the presence of acids in water, ties up carbon derived from the rock and from dissolved CO as aqueous HCO -. Deposition of dissolved carbonate minerals is accompanied - and usually triggered - by release of some of the carbon as CO . In many karst locations, CO emission is associated with the deposition of calcareous sinter (tufa, travertine) at the outlet of cold or warm springs. Though most abundant in humid regions, karst can also be found in arid terrains where H S in groundwater rising from reducing zones at depth oxidizes to produce sulphuric acid, which can form large caves, such as the Carlsbad Caverns of New Mexico. Similar processes also operate in humid regions but tend to be masked by the CO reaction. Sulphates and rock salt are rarely exposed in humid climates. They are susceptible to rapid dissolution during periodic rains where they are at the surface in drier terrains.

    Entry requirements
Candidates who have obtained Bachelor's degrees in following subjects may apply for the postgraduate course: BSc in geography, geology, chemistry, physics, biology, wood sciences, agriculture, environmental sciences, landscape architecture, water sciences and civil engineering. Also, candidates with BSc degrees in other subjects, provided they have passed the required differential exams, have an average marking score of 8.0, or have significantly contributed to research and development in the field of Karst studies, may apply.
    Length and method of study
The programme offers two options a master's and a PhD course of study. In the former, the programme takes two years, and leads to the title of 'Master of Science'. In the latter, the programme takes four years, and leads to the title 'Doctor of Science, ie PhD'. The course of study comprises of:
    • The compulsory part of the programme
    • The four optional modules
Subject sessions are taught during shorter, more intensive periods of the academic year, followed by an exam. Each subject is assigned a particular number of credits. In the evaluation of subjects, the European credit and transfer system (ECTS) is used, which enables an easy transfer of credits among European higher education institutions. Students are required to pass the exams from the compulsory part of the programme before entering the second year of study.

My research dissertation examines the cockpit karst geomorphology of The Cockpit Country in Jamaica, as well as the landforms found immediately outside its boundaries. Indeed, the Cockpit Country is the type area for the cockpit variety of tropical karst. The late Dr. Marjorie Sweeting and one of her graduate students, Mick Day, both from Oxford, carried out pioneering research in the area decades ago. I now seek to employ Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and other high-tech tools to re-examine the terrain in the hope of figuring out what exactly is 'cockpit karst'. Publications:

KARST GEOMORPHOLOGY RESEARCH IN SOUTH GEORGIA my page Since 1993, I have conducted collaborative studies that examine the geomorphology of sinkholes on the southeast coastal plain of Georgia. The first project, coauthored with Peter Jacobs, examines the morphology, distribution, and geomorphic significance of >300 new sinkholes that formed in response to flooding in 1994 at Albany, Ga. The second paper in this series (coauthored with Holly Wilkes, a VSU undergraduate student, and Peter Jacobs) examines spatial relationships between the new sinkholes and pre-flood (old) sinkholes . This paper, which is currently in review, uses digital elevation modeling techniques to evaluate the influence that topography has had on sinkhole development. Finally, in collaboration with Robert Gilbert (Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada), we have recently conducted several subottom acoustic surveys of sinkhole lakes near Valdosta. Although this project has only just begun, Bob and I are excited by the results that we have obtained from surveys at Lake Balboa which indicates in excess of 25 m of sediment infill beneat the lake.
