http://www.nzherald.tx.co.nz/schools/weeklythemes_hp.htm
We live in a world where new discoveries are changing life on a daily basis.
  • What is it that makes an invention successful in the real world, outside of the workshop or lab? An invention that people will pay for and that makes a difference to someone, for instance a personal computer, DVD player or motorised wheelchair?
Identify and discuss an invention or discovery that has had a material impact on people or business. Who developed it and how was it developed, marketed and sold? What patent, trademark or other legal protection was required to protect it?
Remember that you can answer these questions in any way you like. The human side of technology may lend itself to a cartoon as well as a written piece. What do users experience when they employ new technology? You could interview some of them and tell us their insights. Visit www.hp.co.nz/education for further information.

Book Series: NATO SCIENCE PARTNERSHIP SUB-SERIES: 4: Science and Technology Policy Volume 19
Technology transfer has expanded rapidly over the past 20 years in Western Europe, North America and the Pacific Rim. It has been estimated that some 50% of new products and processes will originate outside the primary developer; academic and other research institutions are obvious sources of much of this new technology.
In the NATO Co-operating countries, however, technology transfer is in its infancy; it is crucial for wealth creation and improvement in the quality of life that this mechanism is developed. The papers selected for inclusion in this book discuss issues related to the development of technology transfer in NATO Co-operating countries. The book identifies crucial research issues for science and technology policy researchers and, as a conclusion, offers some policy recommendations. The authors are drawn from NATO and Co-operating partner countries, from other parts of the world, and from international organisations. The focus of the book is on the institutional framework of knowledge and technology transfer; intellectual property rights as sources of information and tools for co-operation; international, national and regional aspects of knowledge and technology dissemination and diffusion; and networking.

INVENTION TO INNOVATION: DOES BRITAIN FAIL?
A research team from the University of Edinburgh will spend the next three years investigating the perceived failure of British industry to turn inventions into innovations over the last fifty years. The project, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council with a grant of £193,662, will undertake comparative studies of technology transfer involving firms in the UK, Germany, Japan and the USA. The focus for this study is to track the exploitation of inventions patented and licensed by the British Technology Group, and its predecessor, the National Research Development Corporation. The NRDC was set up in 1949 amid concern that the UK was failing to get full benefit from its inventions. The example often cited was that of the first antibiotic drug, penicillin, which, although discovered by the Scottish bacteriologist Sir Alexander Fleming, was commercially developed in the USA. Researchers will look at, and compare, firms operating in different industrial sectors, with varying types of technologies, and in several countries. They will also consider the impact of national, structural factors such as the market economies and investment policies on technology transfer. Says research team grant-holder Dr Graham Spinardi of the Research Centre for Social Sciences: "In some of these cases, UK industry appears to have been highly successful in exploiting a British invention. In others, the success appears to have been more limited. Other cases show almost complete failure on the part of UK industry to take advantage of indigenous inventions."
