www.es.hokudai.ac.jp/english HOME History Map Members List ... Organization Section of Scientific Instrumentation and Control In this section, investigations are made on the mechanisms and implementation of flexible and adaptive control systems, such as those of a living body, based on the metrology that relies on parallel, interactive, and high-speed characteristics of light and electron waves. The section comprises four laboratories that are Optical Systems Engineering,Electromagnetic Sensing, Biofluid Dynamics, and Biomedical Control.
Optical Systems Engineering
Our group investigates advanced technologies of optical measurement and control utilizing temporal and spatial characteristics of laser light, which lead to ultra-fast optical devices and optical nano-sensing and nano-manipulation systems. Basic researches on quantum computation and quantum communication using photons as well as quantum electrodynamic devices are also progressed, which are useful and promising as future information technologies. Research topics include (1) nanometer-space potential analysis with radiation pressure of laser, (2) emission and energy transfer dynamics within a microspherical cavity, (3) near-field microscopy with an upconversion microspherical laser, (4) time-resolved scattering spectroscopy of nanometer-sized particles, (5) linear optics quantum computation and entanglement manipulation of photons, and (6) multi-photon detection devices and single photon generators for quantum cryptography.
Electromagnetic Sensing
Our studies are focused on superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs), including high-temperature-superconductor SQUIDs for practical measurements, and their biomedical applications. Based on the high spatio-temporal resolution of SQUIDs, cortical loci and their dynamics of neural activities underlying various functions of the human brain are visualized. Auditory/visual sensory functions and higher functions including awareness, memory, language, and music comprehension of the human brain are elucidated by multi-modal approach using the SQUID, functional MRI, and high-resolution EEG, supplemented with behavioral measurements of eye-movements and/or reaction time.

    Programma: Scientific instrumentation
    Titel-Eng Scientific instrumentation Samenvatting-Eng Objectives
In this joint Philips/FOM programme, excellent research is funded which is aimed at improving instrumentation and techniques for handling physical processes. Two subthemes are defined:
    1. Improvement of instrumentation and techniques for preparation and characterisation of materials.
    2. Improvement of instrumentation for the life sciences (medical equipment, health care, fitness monitoring).
    Background, relevance and implementation
    1. Technological developments in the electronics industry are closely related to our knowledge of the structure, morphology and composition of materials.
Particle beams play a key role in preparation and analysis, since the chemical and physical composition of materials can be either manipulated or studied using X-rays, electrons and ions.
With manipulation, one can think of the etching of physical structures using particle beams (including laser beams), but also ion implantation or the introduction of defects.

    Scientific and Diagnostic Instruments
The HAARP program has developed an extensive set of scientific research instruments useful for monitoring the Earth's geophysical and electromagnetic background. Information available from these instruments descibes physical conditions in the ionosphere and magnetosphere that affect communication and navigation systems. These instruments serve an essential, diagnostic role during active ionospheric research, providing knowledge of local ionospheric conditions prior to, during and after research periods. Data collected from these instruments are processed and displayed at the site, allowing scientists to monitor results of ongoing experiments in real time. Many of these instruments are useful in their own right, having the capability to observe naturally occurring ionospheric processes even when active research is not being conducted. Monitoring the outputs from these instruments on a day-to-day basis provides insight into the correlation between radio propagation conditions and certain geophysical processes. Output from these instruments is being combined into an integrated data package which will be available worldwide over the internet in near real time, allowing scientists to observe results, and thereby participate in the investigations, directly from their laboratories. Currently available data products can be found on our
