Why is Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) in Schools Important?
Poor indoor air quality can hasten building deterioration. One study of an elementary school showed that if $8,140 had been spent over 22 years on preventive maintenance, $1.5 million in repairs could have been avoided1. In addition, poor indoor air quality can contribute to the closing of schools, create liability problems, and strain relationships among parents, teachers, and the school administration.

Program Description
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment's Air Pollution Control Division recognizes Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) as a growing public concern. Currently, there are no regulations directly addressing non-occupational indoor air quality in Colorado. Most other states and the Environmental Protection Agency also do not have regulations for non-occupational indoor air quality. The division is working to develop guidelines and would welcome input from the public. You may e-mail questions and comments to any of the links below. Three members of the division have extensive backgrounds in IAQ investigation and are available to answer questions and may be contacted by e-mail or phone. Please put IAQ in the subject line so that we may more readily identify your e-mails. You may also check with your county health departments for individuals who are knowledgeable about IAQ concerns.
Indoor Air Quality Concerns
Poor indoor air quality can be a serious health risk, and Americans should take the appropriate steps to protect themselves and their families, according to air quality and respiratory health experts. Most people spend as much as 90 percent of their time indoors; air quality conditions in homes, schools, and the workplace can greatly affect morale, productivity, and health.

INDOOR AIR QUALITY
Revised: July 1996 INTRODUCTION The average person spends approximately 90% of their time indoors. Recent studies have indicated that indoor air is often dirtier and/or contains higher levels of contaminants than outdoor air. Because of this and increased awareness regarding poor indoor air quality (IAQ), it is not surprising that the number of reported employee complaints of discomfort and illness in nonindustrial workplaces is increasing. WHEN DID POOR INDOOR AIR QUALITY BECOME A PROBLEM? Beginning in the mid-1970s, IAQ complaints increased for two reasons. The main reason is the impact of the energy crisis. To reduce heating and cooling costs, buildings have been made "airtight" with insulation and sealed windows. In addition, the amount of outside air introduced into buildings has been reduced. The second reason is that more chemical containing products, office supplies, equipment, and pesticides have been introduced into the office environment increasing employee exposure. These changes created IAQ health problems known as Sick Building Syndrome (SBS) or Building Related Illnesses (BRI). WHAT IS SICK BUILDING SYNDROME?

According to the EPA, the air inside your home may be up to five times more polluted than the air outside. Pollutants in your home's air can cause poor indoor air quality, which in turn may cause dizziness and headaches, plus aggravate allergies and asthma.

Indoor Air Quality
American adults spend about 90% of their time indoors, and thanks to our more tightly insulated/sealed homes and workplaces, the concentration of pollutants indoors may be even higher than outdoors. Major indoor pollutants include environmental tobacco smoke (secondhand smoke); radon; combustion products stemming from sources such as pet dander, pollen, molds, and dust mites; volatile organic compounds present in paints, cleaners, pesticides, copiers, printers, glues, and adhesives; lead dust from old, lead-based paints; and asbestos. Here are five easy steps you can take to reduce pollution at home:
Vacuum and clean regularly. Wipe your feet on a doormat. Better yet, take your shoes off when you enter your home. Avoid smoke from wood stoves, fireplaces, and cigarettes. Use less toxic products for managing pest problems in your home and garden. Use fans or open windows to reduce moisture in bathrooms and kitchens and reduce build-up of indoor pollutants. Air Cleaners Learn the best and worst ways to clean your indoor air.
