Please notify us if there are other words you would like added to the list. Allergy Allergies are inappropriate or exaggerated reactions of the immune system to substances that, in the majority of people, cause no symptoms. Symptoms of the allergic diseases may be caused by exposure of the skin to a chemical, of the respiratory system to particles of dust or pollen (or other substances), or of the stomach and intestines to a particular food. Anaphylaxis Anaphylaxis, or anaphylactic shock, is a severe, frightening and life-threatening allergic reaction. The reaction, although rare, can occur after an insect sting or as a reaction to an injected drug - for example, penicillin or antitetanus (horse) serum. Less commonly, the reaction occurs after a particular food or drug has been taken by mouth. Antibody An antibody is a protein (also called an immunoglobulin) that is manufactured by lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) to neutralize an antigen or foreign protein. Bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms commonly contain many antigens, as do pollens, dust mites, molds, foods, and other substances. Although many types of antibodies are protective, inappropriate or excessive formation of antibodies may lead to illness. When the body forms a type of antibody called IgE (immunoglobulin E), allergic rhinitis, asthma or eczema may result when the patient is again exposed to the substance which caused IgE antibody formation (allergen).

By entering a zip code or a city, state and street address on the Allergist Locator , you will be given a list of up to eight nearby allergists, their addresses and phone numbers and the driving distance to each office. The Allergist Locator also will draw a map of the locations of the allergists. The map can be manipulated by zooming in on a neighborhood street grid or out to view the entire region. You can print out both the list and the map. Telephone Referral The ACAAI also operates a nationwide allergist referral service. Callers to the toll-free number can receive by mail the names, addresses and telephone numbers of board-certified allergists who practice in their vicinity. A board-certified allergist has completed a three-year residency training program in either internal medicine or pediatrics, followed by a two- or three-year program of study in the field of allergy and immunology. Glossary of Immunology NB: You can search this document using the FIND command from the EDIT menu. Accessory cell: Cell required for, but not actually mediating, a specific immune response. Often used to describe antigen-presenting cells (APC; see below). Affinity: A measure of the binding constant of a single antigen combining site with a monovalent antigenic determinant. Agglutination: The aggregation of particulate antigen by antibodies. Agglutination applies to red blood cells as well as to bacteria and inert particles covered with antigen. Allelic: Relating to one of a series of two or more alternate forms of a gene that occupy the same position or locus on a specific chromosome. Allelic exclusion: The ability of heterozygous lymphoid cells to produce only one allelic form of antigen-specific receptor when they have the genetic endowment to produce both. Genes other than those for the specific receptors are usually expressed codominantly. Allergen: An antigen responsible for producing allergic reactions by inducing IgE formation. Allergy: A term covering immune reactions to non-pathogenic antigens, which lead to inflammation and deleterious effects in the host.

These invaders include viruses, bacteria, protozoa or even larger parasites. In addition, we develop immune responses against our own proteins (and other molecules) in autoimmunity and against our own aberrant cells in tumor immunity. Our first line of defense against foreign organisms are barrier tissues such as the skin that stop the entry of organism into our bodies. If, however, these barrier layers are penetrated, the body contains cells that respond rapidly to the presence of the invader. These cells include macrophages and neutrophils that engulf foreign organisms and kill them without the need for antibodies. Immediate challenge also comes from soluble molecules that deprive the invading organism of essential nutrients (such as iron) and from certain molecules that are found on the surfaces of epithelia, in secretions (such as tears and saliva) and in the blood stream. This form of immunity is the innate or non-specific immune system that is continually ready to respond to invasion.
