Imaging science advances research to improve Hoosier health By Mary Hardin Researchers at the Indiana Center of Excellence in Biomedical Imaging (IN-CEBI) have an eye on the future. They are dedicated to developing better imaging technologies and imaging agents to study, diagnose and improve patient health. The IN-CEBI, located in Research II, conducts its own research efforts and supports interdepartmental research activities at the IU School of Medicine (IUSM). A bonus for IN-CEBI’s research efforts in Research II is a patient imaging suite with more advanced technology than many hospitals. Researchers dedicated to developing the next generation of imaging agents used for MRI and CT scans have a space devoted to human clinical trials. “One of the valued amenities of the IN-CEBI is its patient imaging suites, which gives us ample space for clinical trials of the radiopharmaceuticals developed in our labs and the newly opened Biotechnology Research and Training Center (BRTC) near the IUSM campus,” said Gary Hutchins, center director. “Our researchers are developing new imaging agents for PET and CT to detect and evaluate cell growth and death. This enhances early detection of diseases and treatment of diseases, and gives us a better look at the biochemical processes of the brain and body.”

159499 v.3 Bachelor of Science (Medical Imaging Science)
    BSc(Curtin)
    Introduction
Medical imaging science involves the application of a range of medical imaging procedures which use x-rays (radiography and computed tomography), radioisotopes (nuclear medicine), ultrasound (sonography) or magnetic fields (magnetic resonance imaging) as the forms of radiation to produce an image. Through these procedures and images the structure and functions of various body systems are displayed and a diagnosis of the illness or injury determined.

We are pleased to announce the arrival of two new state-of-the art MRI systems for imaging research applications at Mount Sinai. One system is a 1.5T Siemens Sonata whole-body system and the other is a 3.0T Siemens Allegra head-only system specially equipped to perform functional brain imaging and general high-resolution imaging. Both are located in a new facility, the Advanced MRI Suite (AMRIS), near the clinical MRI suite in Radiology Associates. There is also since January 2000, a small-bore 9.4T (89 mm bore) Bruker MRI system, located in the Imaging Science Laboratories (ISL), for MR Microscopic Imaging of mice or small tissue specimens. Please note that the General Electric (GE) MR systems are now dedicated for clinical use only. Only projects that had special arrangements with ISL will be finished or continued on the GE systems.
