Industrial development and population growth will continue to put strains on environmental systems and on vital natural resources, including water resources. Engineers and scientists trained in hydrology, water and soil chemistry, atmospheric sciences, and biological sciences are needed to address critical environmental issues that involve interconnections between the earth's water, energy, and biogeochemical cycles, as well as connections between these cycles and human activities. The Environmental Engineering and Water Resources Program provides students the opportunity to study a broad range of topics related to environmental problems, and to pursue advanced research in specific areas of interest, with a focus on the application of modern quantitative techniques to practical problems in environmental engineering. PLAN OF STUDY COOPERATIVE PROGRAM WITH RUTGERS Under an agreement with Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, graduate students in the Program in Environmental Engineering and Water Resources may elect pertinent graduate courses at Rutgers (New Brunswick Campus). The areas of emphasis at Rutgers that may be of particular interest include atmospheric sciences, environmental sciences, microbiology, and toxicology.

National Institute of Hydrology, Roorkee
ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
The National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) was established in 1978 as a research organisation under UNDP project with its Headquarters at Roorkee (Uttaranchal). The Institute was established as an autonomous society under the Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India with the following main objectives:
* To undertake, aid, promote and co-ordinate systematic and scientific work in all aspects of hydrology;
* To co-operate and collaborate with other national, foreign and international organisations in the field of hydrology;
* To establish and maintain a research and reference library.
Basic and applied research, field and laboratory oriented action research, demand driven research and technology transfer form the major activities of the Institute. It is the endeavour of the Institute to apply hydrological principles for solving water resources problems of the country.
The Institute is working in different areas of hydrology divided into eighteen scientific divisions (Hydrologic Design, Surface Water Analysis and Modelling, Flood Studies, Mountain Hydrology, Ground Water Assessment, Ground Water Modelling and Conjunctive Use, Drought Studies, Drainage, Watershed Development, Water Resources System, Environmental Hydrology, Atmospheric Land Surface Modelling, Lake Hydrology, Nuclear Hydrology, Hydrological Investigation, Hydrological Instrumentation, Hydrological Information System, Remote Sensing Applications) attached with sophisticated laboratory facilities. To study hydrological problems of various agro-climatic regions in the country, the Institute has established regional centres at Belgaum, Jammu, Guwahati, Patna, Kakinada and Sagar. The Institute is having latest computer hardware and software and one of the best libraries on hydrology. You can also visit the

The Arizona Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) was established in 1957. Its mission is to provide statewide outreach and education focused on critical water issues affecting Arizona and to provide expertise on state and regional water management and policy. Located within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at the University of Arizona, the WRRC administers the Federal 104 grant program authorized by the Water Resources Research Act of 1964. Related missions are to communicate water-related research needs from research users to researchers, and to report research findings to potential users of that information. The WRRC works with public/private organizations and individuals to provide information and services through outreach, conferences and symposia, and a publications program that includes two newsletters.

    133. South Tobacco Creek Project
    Southern Manitoba hydrology water research, near Miami, preventing soil erosion and promoting environmental concerns. Describes research, reports, partners and history.
    http://www.deerwood.mb.ca/stc01.html
    The South Tobacco Creek Project Working with many partners, the Deerwood Association ( DSWMA ) has been the focus of several small watershed research projects designed to find out what cost effective conservation measures could be undertaken along the Manitoba Escarpment, in South-Central Manitoba, Canada. In our area, the Manitoba Escarpment rises some 600 feet over 3 miles from the flat prairie land that is the Red River Valley (also known as Lake Morris during wet years) - see additional links at http://www.gov.mb.ca/flood/index.html Our most important research effort to date is the South Tobacco Creek Project. It is comprehensive and encompasses many smaller, highly focused projects. Researchers are studying water samples taken from:
    • Two farm fields at the headwaters of the South Tobacco Creek A sampling station on the South Tobacco Creek below the base of the escarpment. The Red River. Lake Winnipeg.
    Researchers hope to gain a greater understanding of the point of origin (or source) of pesticides, nutrients and sediments in the ecosystem, in addition to detailed hydrology research. They are also studying the methods (or process) of movement of these materials as they progress through the ecosystem. The result of the research will be improved knowledge and awareness about how these processes occur. This knowledge and awareness will lead to possible suggestions to improve land use management practices. Common sense and progressive attitudes have helped local residents and project participants implement the results of these research projects. This site is intended to show other agricultural landowners, researchers, students, and the general public what one group of farmers can do. This site has overview information and very specific information. The further a reader investigates, the more information they will discover.

More technically hydrology is the study of the occurrence and movement of water in the soil, atmosphere, rivers, lakes, and oceans, and underground aquifers. As such the subject cuts across nearly all of the geophysical sciences and some of the biological ones as well. Hydrology is sometimes divided into the above ground and below ground components and the below ground component called hydrogeology. Hydrogeology is the study of the movement and characteristics of ground water, usually in rock strata, and in the interactions between rock strata and water. For the purposes of Nearctica , hydrology has been limited to the physical properties of water located on the surface or below the surface of the earth. Water in the atmosphere or in precipitation is treated in the weather components of the geophysics segment of
