2004 Annual Fall Conference Call for Papers
In Memory of Helen Klose

The American Institute of Hydrology (AIH) was formed in 1981 as a non-profit scientific and educational organization. AIH is the only nationwide organization to offer certification to professionals in all fields of hydrology. The Institute adheres to the principles of responsible professional conduct and public service. The purpose of AIH is to enhance and strengthen the standing of hydrology as a science and a profession by:
  • Establishing standards and procedures to certify individuals qualified in surface-water, groundwater, and water-quality hydrology.
  • Establishing and maintaining ethical standards to protect the public from irresponsible work.
  • Providing education and training in hydrology.
  • Providing the public and government advice and guidance concerning activities related to the hydrologic profession.

National Institute of Hydrology, Belgaum
Introduction
The National Institute of Hydrology (NIH) was established in 1978 with its headquarters at Roorkee - 247667 (Uttaranchal), India. It is an autonomous society under the Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India. Its main objective is to undertake systematic and scientific research (basic and applied) in all aspects of Hydrology. To study specific hydrological problems of different regions of the country, the Institute has established regional centres at Belgaum (Hard Rock Regional Centre), Jammu (Western Himalayan Regional Centre), Guwahati (North Eastern Regional Centre), Kakinada (Deltaic Regional Centre), Patna (Centre for Flood Management Studies), and Sagar (Ganga Plains South Regional Centre).
Hard Rock Regional Centre, Belgaum
The first regional centre of NIH was established in 1987 at Belgaum (Karnataka). It deals with the hydrological problems associated with hard rock areas in the country. The areas covered under this regional centre include the states of Karnataka and parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu. The scientific studies of Belgaum regional centre include representative basin studies, hydrometeorological network improvement, hydrological year book, hydrological modelling, regional flood formulae, conjunctive use studies, reservoir sedimentation studies, environmental hydrology, watershed development studies, tank studies, and drought studies. The regional centre is equipped with soil testing and water quality laboratories. It has also monitored automatic weather stations at Nagargalli (Barchi catchment) and Halkarni (Ghataprabha representative basin).

Home Practices Civil/Structural Engineering : Geotechnical, Geological and Geomechanical Engineering
Geotechnical, geological, and geomechanical engineers and scientists work with large volumes of soil, rock, and fluids with properties that are poorly understood compared to the structures that they support. Failures of naturally complex soil and rock masses, and the structures built upon or within them, often occur because the initial geotechnical, geological, and geohydrological characterizations were inadequate. Exponent's Geotechnical, Geological, and Geomechanical Engineering (Geo3) staff provides unusually broad expertise in geotechnical engineering, geological engineering, engineering geology, geophysics, geomechanics, and groundwater hydrology to address a host of geo-failures, including landslides, foundation and retaining wall failures, oil-well distress, and floods, as well as earthwork construction claims.
