Hydrogeology Program
The Hydrogeology Program, which began in summer, 2001, is a new program within the FGS Geological Investigations section. The purpose of this program is to conduct hydrogeologic research at the FGS in support of the need for unbiased, scientific knowledge of Florida’s watersheds with specific emphasis on aquifer systems. The program also has plans to administer this type of research through outsourcing of research funds. Knowledge gained through this research is applicable to rule making, regulatory, and policy decisions that facilitate efficient, science-based protection of the quantity and quality of Florida’s water resources – a critical component of Florida’s environment
Current Projects: (back to top)
Although organizationally within Geological Investigations, the Hydrogeology Program is an FGS-wide program that will serve as a focal point through which research efforts, expertise and physical resources can be coordinated. As such, the program will facilitate communication and cost-efficient research. A few of the current projects in the Hydrogeology Program include:

Current Projects Publications Staff The Hydrogeology Department consists of more than 60 scientists, postdocs, research associates, and graduate students carrying out a broad range of cutting-edge research in fundamental and applied hydrology. The Hydrogeology Department has expertise in theoretical, experimental, field, and modeling approaches in a variety of research areas, among which are unsaturated zone hydrology (including fracture flow and transport), reservoir engineering (including pore-level modeling and gas hydrate studies), contaminant hydrology (including reactive and colloid-assisted transport), and coupled nonisothermal, geochemical, and geomechanical processes. The Hydrogeology Department department addresses national needs in the areas of subsurface energy resource recovery, contaminant hydrology, geologic CO2 storage, and nuclear waste disposal. Highlights of research efforts in these areas over the last two years include the following: Subsurface Energy Resource Recovery Contaminant Hydrology Geologic CO2 Storage Nuclear Waste Disposal in the Unsaturated Zone The coupled approach of field experiment and modeling analysis has served to advance understanding of the coupled flow and transport properties of Yucca Mountain. Field data are used to constrain and calibrate numerical models of flow and transport developed over a wide range of scales for Yucca Mountain. These efforts involve the use of the inverse modeling version of TOUGH2 called iTOUGH2, also developed by the Hydrogeology Department personnel. On the mountain scale, a large three-dimensional TOUGH2 model has been developed, the flow fields from which are used with advanced transport modules that consider colloid-assisted transport and diffusion to model radionuclide transport. The details of seepage into drifts, flow diversion, and flow focusing are modeled on appropriate scales, as are processes of water-rock interaction and geomechanical effects.

Center For Geospatial Data Analysis Willow Creek Demonstration Watershed Research in hydrogeology and aqueous geochemistry deals with a large variety of issues. Large-scale groundwater flow, the estimation of fluid and solute fluxes and transport properties of rocks are investigated by Henk Haitjema. The groundwater models are used by Haitjema in designing pumping schemes to withdraw contaminants from the subsurface. Jeff White studies the aqueous chemistry and biogeochemistry of lakes and lake sediments, while Noel Krothe is interested in the geochemistry of groundwater, using dyes as tracers for subsurface flow in karst terrains, and the movement of agricultural contaminants in groundwater. He is presently involved in groundwater contamination studies for Westinghouse Electric Corporation and the Naval Weapons Support Center, Crane. Greg Olyphant is involved in projects concerning acid mine drainage and the use of coal-combustion byproducts in abandoned mine land reclamation. He also works with models of wetland hydrology for guiding restoration plans, and on development of three-dimensional models of shallow aquifer systems. Mark Person studies paleoclimates and paleohydrogeology, and hydrologic constraints on petroleum generation in continental rift basins.

Target
The examples shown in the following figures deliver an insight into the results of CRM's work in this area. Of course our tender includes not only the simulation of groundwater flow with numerical models. Our hydrogeological department is capable of realising more tasks; please take a look at References
Waterworks
In our example a waterworks pumps 1,0 mill. m water a year using four wells. The aquifer is structured in main aquifer extending 50 - 75 m and a 10 - 20 m thick upper aquifer. They are separated by an aquitard, which has a lot of hydraulic windows. This hydro stratigraphic situation is characteristical for Schleswig-Holstein. We conducted a survey of the consequences of pumping groundwater from the aquifers and the identification of the catchment area of the wells. Therefore, we simulated the groundwater flow using the numerical groundwater models MODFLOW/EM and MODPATH. Some of our results are portrayed in following figures, which are only cutouts of the complete presentation.
Horizontal groundwater table map
Figure 1 shows the simulated horizontal steady state groundwater flow in the upper (black groundwater contour lines) and in the main aquifer (blue groundwater contour lines) in a model during pumping by the waterworks (Q = 1,0 mill.. m

Stratigraphy and lithology of the Woodville Karst Plain (WKP)
The Miocene age sediments include the St. Marks Formation and the Hawthorn Group. The Hawthorn Group is composed of several formations and numerous members. It is primarily a clastic unit, consisting of fine to medium grained sandy clays and silty, clayey sands, with variable amounts of carbonate (Rupert, 1988). These are usually interbedded and sometimes contain minor amounts of dolomite and phosphate. Much of the Hawthorn has limited permeability and acts as a confining unit north of the Cody scarp, called the Tallahassee Hills. The St. Marks sediments are predominately fine to medium fine grained, partially recrystallized, silty to sandy limestones that have undergone degrees of secondary dolomitization (Hendry and Sproul, 1966). Within the WKP, the St. Marks Formation comprises the top of the Upper FAS (Rupert, 1988). It also contains extensive shallow conduits in portions of the Leon Sinks cave system and Indian Springs cave. It pinches out against the Suwannee Limestone in southwestern Jefferson County and reaches a maximum thickness of approximately 60 m toward western Wakulla County.
