Hurricane Andrew and Iniki in 1992 and Hugo in 1989 disrupted the lives of thousands of people. While nothing can be done to stop hurricanes, there are actions you can take to help maintain your personal health and safety during and after a hurricane. This pamphlet provides information to help you prepare for, react to, and recover from the impacts of a hurricane, and maintain your physical and mental health in the days and weeks following the storm. This information is provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in cooperation with state and local health departments. It includes general guidelines for prevention of disease and injury. However, some recommendations may vary from state to state. Please contact your state health department for health advisories or recommendations that are specific to local conditions. The Hurricanes lack of depth was very prevalent, the side lacked togetherness without stars Tana Umaga, Jonah Lomu, Dion Waller and Rodney S o'oialo. There were some glimpses of good form, with Shannon Paku's try looking all too easy. In the end it was a below average result in a below average season. Christian Cullen again showed great improvement in his form in Friday night's 44 - 20 loss to the Chiefs Canes Down The Drain Hurricanes rugby coach Graham Mourie refused to discuss his future last night after his side ended the 2002 Super 12 with a disappointing 44-20 loss to the Chiefs in Hamilton. But there's no doubt the sympathetic feeling towards Mourie, after the unlucky Waratahs loss in Sydney a fortnight ago, has dissipated to the stage where his fate hangs in the balance.

Hurricanes and Coastal Storms
Why Cover Hurricanes?
Hurricanes are among the most violent storms people suffer in the U.S. Gulf and Atlantic states. They are news before they happen, while they are happening, and sometimes for years after they happen. Some hurricanes, like Hurricane Andrew, are mostly wind events. Others carry their punch with water. Last year’s Hurricane Floyd was such a water event — unleashing torrents of muddy, polluted water upon thousands of people in North Carolina, Virginia, and New Jersey. Born far out in the Atlantic, Floyd generated winds topping 135 knots as it advanced upon the southeast U.S. coast September 13, 1999. After menacing Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina, Floyd made landfall near Cape Fear, North Carolina, on September 16 with sustained winds near 110 mph. The maximum storm surge struck at high tide, contributing to extensive overwash, dune retreat, and damage to homes on barrier islands. The water dumped by Floyd was devastating. Rainfall totaled a record 15 to 20 inches. Storm surges reached 10 feet in coastal North Carolina. This rain fell on lands still saturated from Hurricane Dennis less than two weeks earlier, and runoff was greater because water could not soak in. A month later, Hurricane Irene dumped another 5-10 inches of new rain on some of the areas hardest by Floyd. Floyd killed 57 people — the deadliest U.S. hurricane since Agnes in 1972. Most of those killed drowned in North Carolina as rivers unable to handle the deluge swelled beyond known flood plains. Damage estimates topped $3 billion to $6 billion.

Mapping Coastal Change Hazards

Current Tropical Storm Tracks: courtesy Dr. T. Metcalf, Univ. of Hawaii
Overview
USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program investigates the extent and causes of coastal impacts of hurricanes and extreme storms on the coasts of the United States. Our overall objective is to improve the capability to predict coastal change that results from severe tropical and extra-tropical storms. Such a capability will facilitate locating buildings and infrastructure away from coastal change hazards. Extreme storm investigations have three integrated components:
Scanning Airborne Laser Altimetry (Lidar)

With our partners in NASA and NOAA, USGS acquires laser altimetry surveys that are providing unprecedented data to investigate the magnitude and causes of coastal change.
USGS acquires GPS-controlled pre- and post-storm oblique imagery to document coastal changes and to assist in interpreting the laser altimetry data.

How do hurricanes form?
Hurricanes are mind-boggling in their size and strength. Modern technology lets us see how big hurricanes are and track them through satellite imagery, while storm-penetrating aircraft measure their strength, in terms of wind speeds and atmospheric pressure. That technology gives us detailed warnings that people a century ago never had. Hurricanes usually form in the tropical zones north and south of the equator, where warm waters offer ample fuel for storm formation. That's where you see convection , where warm air rises and forms clusters of thunderstorms. The Coriolis effect, created by the Earth's spinning motion, may cause this cluster of storms to rotate (counter-clockwise above the equator, or clockwise below), but the system has to be a few hundred miles from the equator for the Coriolis force to exert an effect. If the system becomes organized and strong enough, with sustained winds of 39 miles per hour, it becomes a tropical storm. At 74 miles per hour or more, it becomes a hurricane. A hurricane can be hundreds of miles across. It's like a big engine, with upper-level winds acting as a vent, pulling the rising warm air away from the storm. Rain bands spiral around the center of the system. Air sinks in the clear center, or

GLOSSARY ... ABOUT CHAPTER 7: Introduction to the Atmosphere (u). Tropical Weather and Hurricanes Tropical Weather The tropics can be defined as the area of the Earth found between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic Capricorn. In this region, the sun will be directly overhead during some part of the year. The temperature of the tropics does not vary much from season to season because considerable solar insolation is received by locations regardless of the season. Weather in the tropics is dominated by convective storms that develop mainly along the intertropical convergence zone , the subtropical high pressure zone , and oceanic disturbances in the trade winds that sometimes develop into hurricanes One of the most important weather features found in the tropics is the intertropical convergence zone . The intertropical convergence zone is distinguished by a wide band of cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds that are created by dynamic atmospheric lifting due to convergence and convection Normally, the intertropical convergence zone delineates the location where the noonday sun is directly overhead on the globe. Because of the high sun, the intertropical convergence zone receives the greatest quantity of daily solar insolation in the tropics. At the intertropical convergence zone, this energy is used to evaporate large amounts of water and is coverted into sensible heat at the ground surface and within the atmosphere. Often, these processes lead to an almost daily development of convective

John Zarrella: More hurricanes on the horizon
John Zarrella Hurricane researchers say the evidence is now clear. A major climate shift has taken place which scientists say means a return to a period of increased numbers of major hurricanes. And they believe it means a very good likelihood a catastrophic hurricane will strike the United States, perhaps doubling the damage done by Hurricane Andrew. CNN's John Zarrella elaborates. Q: What is the gist of this new research? Zarrella: Hurricane scientists at the federal government's Hurricane Research Division in Miami studied climate cycles, water temperatures and wind sheer. Looking back they found periods in historical records where for 20 to 40 years, the water warms in the Atlantic prime breeding ground for hurricanes. Since 1995, when this period of renewed hurricane activity began, they say, the water has been a half degree warmer than in the previous 30 years. That's all it takes they believe. They also found that during these periods there is also a decrease in wind sheer over the Atlantic. Less wind sheer and warmer water means they believe more hurricanes. Q: What areas of the world and the U.S. would be most affected? Zarrella:The entire United States coastline from Florida to the Northeast is, the scientists say, at increased risk. The Caribbean is also in the bull's-eye. While the United States has been lucky since 1995, the Caribbean has already seen the effects of the change. There have been numerous powerful hurricanes like Mitch, Lenny, Georges, Marilyn and Luis. The Gulf of Mexico is not, the scientists say affected by this climate change. Gulf storms will come and go for other reason unrelated to the shift in climate.
