The genetic make-up of the mouse has been published for the first time in a scientific journal. The mouse "book of life" reveals that humans and mice share at least 80% of their genes, with only 300 unique to either organism.
We share 99% of our genes with mice, and we even have the genes that could make a tail
Dr Jane Rogers, Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute About 1,200 new human genes have been discovered while mining the mouse genome. Many are involved in cancer and other human diseases and will help the search for new medical treatments. The mouse data have been produced by a number of US and UK institutions, funded by the National Institutes of Health in America and the Wellcome Trust in Britain. A private US company has already read the mouse genome but its research is not freely available to scientists - they must pay for access.

Wednesday, May 26 2004 The Vanderbilt Center for Human Genetics Research (CHGR) was initiated in July, 1997 to bring a focus to human genetic research at Vanderbilt , to foster the expansion of this research, to help develop new initiatives that incorporate the latest in genetic information, and to develop appropriate training activities for a growing number of students interested in human genetics. The central theme of the CHGR is the understanding of how genes influence complex traits; traits that are influenced by the intricate interplay of multiple genes and environmental factors. This encompasses research at the molecular, clinical, and population levels performed by faculty in multiple departments and schools.

Our Mission
The Department of Human Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health is dedicated to genetics research, teaching, and services. This department has three major research missions:
  • To develop and use genetic methods to investigate the causes and treatment of hereditary and acquired human illness.
  • To understand and explore the impact of genetics on public health, education, and disease prevention.
  • To appreciate the role of genetic diversity within human populations. Training Program
The Department offers degrees at both the Masters and PhD level in Human Genetics, as well as a Masters of Science degree in Genetic Counseling, and a Masters of Public Health in Public Health Genetics. Students gain a strong background in all aspects of human genetics as a result of a broad-based curriculum and research opportunities in basic, applied, or clinical genetics. The program emphasizes the study of genetic mechanisms related to the transition from normal to disease states, and how genes and the environment interact to affect the distribution of health and disease in human populations.

    Flies Invade Human Genetics
    By Ricki Lewis
DOUBLE WINGS: An ultrabithorax mutant fly has a total duplication of the body segment that carries wings. Recent issues of The American Journal of Human Genetics have featured a newcomer: Drosophila melanogaster. The fruit fly is a frequent star of a series of review articles called "Insights From Model Systems." The insect's appearance in a human genetics journal is a telling sign that this model among model organisms, long used to decipher the general principles of inheritance, has achieved a new status in helping researchers understand human genome information. Researchers of the past studied mutations that alter flies in noticeable ways: eye color, wing shape, or mixed-up parts. Today's "fly people" take a more molecular approach, sequencing genes and proteins, then deciphering how they connect into pathways and networks that enable cells to communicate with each other to build the tissues of a complex organism. Such discoveries increasingly point the way to identifying related functions in humans. And the sequence similarities, called homologies, between many fly and human genes are "stunning and striking," says Thomas C. Kaufman
