Wonderfest 2004 will take place on the weekend of November 6-7 at both Stanford and U.C. Berkeley. The dialogue/debate topics will be chosen from among the following tentative title questions
Are We Alone in the Cosmos?
    Was Science An Historical Accident?
    Will Nanotechnology Change the World?
    Is Evolution Truly Random?
Does Media Violence Promote Real Violence?
Will Genetics Allow Us to Revive Extinct Species?
    Does Quantum Mechanics Make Sense?
Has Cultural Evolution Stopped Our Biological Evolution? Is Biodiversity Important? Are Dreams Psychologically Significant? Will We Ever Set Foot on Mars? Are Men Necessary? Is the Universe a Grand Machine? Can We Stop Human Aging? Are Any Ethical Principles Common to Every Culture? Will New Plagues Do Us In? Are Other Primates Conscious? Will the Universe Have a Happy Ending?" Make a donation...
Praise from our past attendees: Very lively discussion! ... Facinating!” “I attended presentations at both Cal and Stanford ... all excellent!”

  • How did the universe begin and evolve?
  • How did we get here?
  • Where are we going?
  • Are we alone?
Today, after only the blink of an eye in cosmic time, we are beginning to answer these questions. Space probes and space observatories have played a central role in this process of discovery. Our missions and research generate most of the coolest news coming out of NASA. We are responsible for all of NASA's programs relating to astronomy, the solar system, and the sun and its interaction with Earth. Our science stretches from the middle levels of Earth's atmosphere to the beginning of the universe, billions of light years away.

Genetics Growth Biology Nutrition Physiology ... Production Systems Physiology
Animal physiology is the field of scientific inquiry into the basic processes underlying the functioning of an animal species and is an engaging and active area of graduate study in the Animal Sciences. The scope of physiology research is broad, spanning the basic to applied, laboratory to field, and cell cultures to large mammals. Graduate students focus their research project in one primary area while gaining supporting knowledge from other areas. Research possiblities include mechanisms of membrane transport, cardiovascular physiology, neuroendocrinology, reproductive endocrinology, and gamete biology. Multidisciplinary approaches are stressed, which encompass molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and veterinary medicine. Graduates have gone into a variety of careers, including scientists and educators at collegiate, industry, and government institutions; employment at zoos, with in virto fertilization clinics, and as managers of animal production units; or received further education to become medical or veterinary practitioners.

T he Coalition for Plasma Science is a group of institutions, organizations, and companies joining forces to increase awareness and understanding of plasma science and its many applications and benefits for society. We hope that by visiting this Web site you learn some new things about plasmas in our world, in our society, and in our economy. T A t the present time when someone encounters the term "plasma" he or she often thinks of blood plasma; the ionized-gas type has to be explained. The Coalition for Plasma Science is working to change this situation. We are working to make the ionized-gas plasma the type that is most familiar to people. If you stumbled on this site looking for information about blood plasma, you're in the wrong place, but please stay a while and learn something about the other type of plasma. Gerald L. Rogoff

160. Glossary Of Colloid And Polymer Science

Hypertext Guide to Terms in Colloid and Polymer Science
Adrian R. Rennie
NFL Studsvik
Uppsala University
Sweden
This glossary of terms is intended to provide a brief guide to the technical expressions used in the description of the properties of colloids, polymers and interfaces. By necessity, the account of each topic is brief. In some cases an equation is quoted or a quantity is defined mathematically but the description can not replace a full text book account of the subject! The terms are arranged alphabetically but many links are provided within this Guide so that further clarification of the topic can be found. The explanation is at an introductory level. The experienced reader will have to excuse a few simplifications. Note. In order to use notation that is standard, equations have been set using the symbol definitions for HTML 4. If this is not available to your browser, the equations may be confusing. As most browsers can display these symbols, this method was chosen in place of using large numbers of graphic elements for equations. A previous version used the FONT FACE tag but this is deprecated in HTML 4 and is not supported by all browsers. Go to A B C D ... Z

Addition Polymerisation
This is a polymerisation reaction that occurs by addition of a monomer to a double bond between two carbon atoms. The reaction will remove the double bond. A typical example is the polymerisation of ethylene (ethene) as follows:
