Women and Science
In most European countries, there are now proportionately more female than male graduates under 30, but women remain under-represented in science and in decision-making bodies concerned with scientific issues. This is both a waste of human resources and a serious obstacle for the development of the sciences and for European society as a whole. The Women and Science activities are part of the Science and Society activities of the European Commission.

Few scientific disciplines seem to generate as many mysteries and falsehoods as astronomy and, by extension, the supporting space science effort to explore the unknown. From alleged hoaxes and conspiracies to unintentionally inaccurate accounts, there is plenty to debunk and correct. On This Page
Mysteries
Myths Hoaxes
Some of the bad information out there is demeaning to real science, an affront to astronomers, astronauts and the general public. Allegations that the Moon landings were fake tops that list. Some of the misinformation is just what it is, non-facts that manage to pop up again and again, either in our brains or in print, many of them perhaps because they seem logical enough. A classic example is the erroneous suggestion that meteors burn up due to friction with air molecules. There are countless mysteries, too, things for which we simply don't have answers despite years or decades of investigation. Dark energy, life, and the origin of sex are but three puzzles astronomers contemplate. The universe is a complex place. Because our weekly Science Tuesday presentations are intended to serve as reservoirs of interesting and factual news and information about the universe, I thought it would be useful to devote one installment to reviewing some of the many myths, outlandish claims, incorrect accounts and plain old enigmas related to nearby and distant cosmic objects and phenomena.

The little gears that couldn't.
The British do have a sense of humour. Why else would they issue this gold and silver two-pound coin to honor the advance of British industry? The artistic designer has used a circle of gears of different sizes in an interlocked array. There are 19 of them. Even if they were sized properly, an odd number of gears meshing around a circle couldn't possibly turn. Each gear turns its neighbor in the opposite direction. How about an even number of gears meshed around a circle? Contrary to one's intuition, such a system would turn no matter what their size and number of teeth, provided the gear teeth were cut according to good engineering standards. But, even then, the gears wouldn't be doing anything useful. One hopes British industry is on the move, even if these gears aren't. Does anyone out there have more documentation on this incident, perhaps public and press reaction, lame excuses by the folks responsible, scientists' reactions? Send all such material to the address below.

The Public Library of Science (PLoS) is a non-profit organization of scientists and physicians committed to making the world's scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource. The internet and electronic publishing enable the creation of public libraries of science containing the full text and data of any published research article, available free of charge to anyone, anywhere in the world. Immediate unrestricted access to scientific ideas, methods, results, and conclusions will speed the progress of science and medicine, and will more directly bring the benefits of research to the public. To realize this potential, a new business model for scientific publishing is required that treats the costs of publication as the final integral step of the funding of a research project. To demonstrate that this publishing model will be successful for the publication of the very best research, PLoS will publish its own journals. PLoS Biology launched its first issue on October 13, 2003, in print and online.

An overview of certain key issues in the philosophy of science, with an emphasis on the work of Popper, Kuhn and Feyerabend.

SECTION CONTENTS
THIS SECTION
INTRO It is important that we review modern philosophies of science since they have served to set the rules for how psychologists have thought about their research for the past 80 years. In other words, if we want to understand what psychologists think they are doing when they carry out scientific research we need to understand their philosophies of science. However, as we shall see there are many different models of the scientific endeavour apart from those that most psychologists use. The evolution of ideas about how to do science indicates that some psychological research is still stuck in an earlier framework which has been supplanted by more recent and arguably more challenging and liberating models of how to carry out empirical investigations. Philosophies of science are ultimately concerned with the question of how we should carry out scientific research given our understanding of the nature of knowledge. Originally, philosophers of science sought to explain how science should be conducted by looking at successful scientists such as Einstein. More recently though the philosophy of science has moved on to consider how most scientists actually work given the social and practical circumstances of their work. Top...
