Scientific Method and Philosophy of Science
29 Sep 2001 23:26 reductionism emergence squabble falls under this discipline, too. But (so far as an outsider can judge), method is where most of the debate is these days. Of course, most scientists proceed in serene indifference to debates in methodology, and indeed all other aspects of the philosophy of science. What Medawar wrote thirty years ago and more is still true today: If the purpose of scientific methodology is to prescribe or expound a system of enquiry or even a code of practice for scientific behavior, then scientists seem to be able to get on very well without it. Most scientists receive no tuition in scientific method, but those who have been instructed perform no better as scientists than those who have not. Of what other branch of learning can it be said that it gives its proficients no advantage; that it need not be taught or, if taught, need not be learned? (Actually, has do statisticians Some or all of this may or may not have close connections to history of science , the social and cultural relations of science , and evolutionary epistemology . I would contend that there are certainly close ties to the sociology of science and machine learning, statistical inference and induction

Become a nature detective and explore the Natural History Museum's scientific work
In Jurassic Park and its sequel, The Lost World , dinosaurs are re-created from fragments of their DNA. Scientists in the film extracted the DNA from ancient bloodsucking insects trapped in amber. How possible is this? The Natural History Museum's scientists find out... Each year up to 60,000 tonnes of meteorites fall to Earth. Most are less than one millimetre across and are called micrometeorites. Recently a scientist from The Natural History Museum discovered a very unusual micrometeorite - help him to unravel its million-year-old history. Recently a 14-year-old boy discovered a skull with large fangs, in the River Fowey on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. Could this be evidence of the fabled Beast of Bodmin Moor? This is the story of how The Natural History Museum tracked down this beast. You are about to embark on a journey back to 1912, to study the bones of Piltdown Man as scientists did then. At each point in your journey, you will consider how scientists would interpret the same fossils today. Could we be fooled again?

Fun With Science
If you're looking for ideas for a science fair project or demonstration, these pages may help you find a topic that would be fun to explore. They also provide ideas for teachers who are looking for classroom demonstrations or hands-on, inquiry-based student exercises to expand their curriculum. I am a US Geological Survey Geophysicist specializing in seismology and earthquake location programming. I enjoy all sorts of science and would like to see more K-12 or K-16 lessons taught on the subjects of tectonics, earthquake processes and earthquake hazards. In addition to Earth Science classes, these topics could be covered within general science, physics, math, and even social studies and geography classes. Not only do earthquakes provide an interesting context within which to teach concepts that are already part of the curriculum of these other subjects, the eventual result of incorporating these topics would be a greater understand and appreciation of the value of mitigating the hazardous effects of future earthquakes within the population as a whole. Projects and lesson plans described in the Earth Science section include a table-top earthquake demonstration, an earthshaking lab, a shake table, and a paper model that illustrates sea floor spreading, subduction, faulting, and the source of volcanic arcs.

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Formerly Proceedings of the Arkansas Academy of Science
The following items are available concerning the Journal. The Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science appears as a single volume annually in April and contains manuscripts that were submitted and accepted at the annual meeting a year prior. Therefore, the Journal is one year behind publication-wise. Becoming a member this year entitles you to a copy of the Journal when it appears the following April (currently 2004). There may, however, be back issues of the Journal still available for purchase ($50). Normally, only a set number are printed each year to keep extra copies (and cost) at a minimum. You can contact the AAS Secretary (Dr. Jeff Robertson) at Arkansas Tech regarding back issues. Return to Arkansas Academy of Science Home Page
