The academic Health Physics Program at the University of Cincinnati is an interdisciplinary program that offers courses in nuclear and radiological engineering, health physics, radiation dosimetry, environmental and radiological health, industrial hygiene, and medical physics. Depending upon a person's academic background and experience, the selection of required academic courses can arranged to best suit the professional interests and goals of the student. Students graduating from the Health Physics M. S. Program are well prepared for professional careers at commercial and governmental nuclear power facilities, Department of Energy laboratories, companies that specialize in health physics, environmental or radiological engineering services for industry, nuclear research laboratories, fuel cycle facilities, medical facilities, and university research laboratories. The Health Physics M. S. Program is a part of Nuclear and Radiological Engineering in the Department of Mechanical, Industrial, and Nuclear Engineering. The courses offered to students in the Health Physics Program are designed to provide an excellent background in health physics, radiation protection, environmental radioactivity and radiological risk assessment, internal and external radiation dosimetry, and the medical aspects of ionizing radiation. Students can elect to continue for a Ph. D. degree in Radiological Engineering or Medical Physics. There is a wide range of contemporary experimental and theoretical research projects in which students can participate to complete their M. S. projects and Ph. D. thesis work. Students are encouraged to work with the faculty in Nuclear and Radiological Engineering to select a research topic.

Health Physics Society (HPS)
(signed February 20, 2004)
Health Physics Society (HPS)
  • The Health Physics Society is a nonprofit scientific professional organization whose mission is excellence in the science and practice of radiation safety. Since its formation in 1956, the society has grown to include approximately 6,000 scientists, physicians, engineers, lawyers, and other professionals. Society activities include encouraging research in radiation science, developing standards, and disseminating radiation safety information. HPS members are involved in understanding, evaluating, and controlling the potential risks from radiation relative to the benefits. HPS has 48 affiliated Chapters throughout the United States, and 8 Technical Sections comprised of members representing a sub-specialty within the field or radiation safety.
OSHA’s Alliance with the HPS focuses on enhancing workplace health and safety, and assisting employers in developing a preventive focus for radiological safety and health issues in workplace environments, especially related to emergency preparedness OSHA and HPS will use their collective expertise to identify existing and emerging occupational radiological safety and health issues and share technical information and best practices. The goals of the Alliance include:
Training and education:
  • Provide OSHA’s Training Institute with educational and training materials and resources on radiological safety and provide peer review of OSHA technical documents and training curricula on topics relevant to radiological safety issues.
