What is the Health Physics? Health physics is the profession dedicated to the protection of the individual, the population, and the environment from the potentially harmful effects of radiation. It incorporates the principles and technical skills from many disciplines: physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, mathematics, ecology, toxicology, and industrial hygiene.
What is Nuclear Medicine?
Nuclear Medicine is the medical specialty that utilizes the nuclear properties of radioactive and stable nuclides to make diagnostic evaluations of the anatomic and/or physiologic conditions of the body and to provide therapy with unsealed radioactive sources.

This site is listed in the BBC Education Web Guide. Begin your journey on the internet with The Rail. This is junction 1360 on "The Science Expedition". "Health physics" is the science of radiation protection - protecting people from exposure to radiation, monitoring the effects of any exposures, and recording any radiation dose received by the person. Radiation is produced by the natural decay of radioactive materials. There are several types of radiation which are important to waste management and nuclear professionals: alpha, beta, gamma and neutron. Each type of radiation has different properties and will react with matter in different ways. For example, alpha and beta radiation have a relatively short range (a few millimetres or centimetres in most materials), while neutron and gamma radiation have a long range (many metres in air) and are very penetrating. The three main principles of radiation protection are: time, distance and shielding. To minimize your radiation exposure, spend as little time as possible near the source, stay as far away as possible, and put some shielding between yourself and the source.

NUCLEAR ENGINEERING AND HEALTH PHYSICS
FELLOWSHIP/SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Sponsored by
U.S. Department of Energy
Office of Nuclear Energy, Science, and Technology
Introduction:
This program is designed to meet the Department of Energy's (DOE) needs for appropriately trained personnel for the maintenance and development of nuclear power technology and in research related to ongoing programs at DOE facilities. Increasing costs for graduate education, a high demand for nuclear engineers and health physicists, and the declining number of academic programs have had a negative impact on the number of well-qualified students seeking degrees in fission technologies and sciences. However, current and planned uses of fission reactors for energy generation and research support at DOE facilities, emphasize the importance of the availability of appropriately educated, highly qualified nuclear engineers and health physicists with undergraduate and advanced degrees. These fellowship and scholarship programs are designed to encourage talented students to continue their education in a related nuclear energy field. These programs will assist in preparing students for leadership roles in fission technology and will also support the broader objective of advancing fission energy through educational and research efforts.

Hotspot Version 2.05
The Hotspot Health Physics codes were created to provide emergency response personnel and emergency planners with a fast, field-portable set of software tools
The Hotspot atmospheric dispersion models are designed for a short-term (less than 24 hours) release duration. Users requiring radiological release consequences for release scenarios over a longer time period, e.g., annual wind-rose data, are directed to such long-term models as . Users requiring more sophisticated modeling capabilities, e.g., complex terrain; multi-location real-time wind field data; etc., are directed to such capabilities as the Department of Energy's NARAC computer codes.
Radionuclide Library Hotspot incorporates Federal Guidance Reports 11, 12, and 13 (FGR-11, FGR-12, FGR-13) Dose Conversion Factors (DCFs) for inhalation, submersion, and ground shine. FGR-12 DCF values are used for submersion and ground shine. In addition to the inhalation 50-year Committed Effective Dose Equivalent DCFs, acute (24-hour) DCFs are available for estimating non-stochastic effects. This acute mode can be used for estimating the immediate radiological impact associated with high acute radiation doses (applicable target organs are the lung, small intestine wall, and red bone marrow).

    Nuclear Safety
Products About Us Our Obligation to Man Knowledge gained over the course of many years, specialized, high quality services, a wide range of competencies in medicine and radiation protection – these are the focuses of this new division. This is where the Research Centers best display the strength resulting from their tight network, teamwork and the possibilities opened up by interdisciplinary work. The Nuclear Safety and Radiopharmaceuticals departments can already look back on a long tradition at Seibersdorf. Radiopharmaceuticals were originally developed in the Process and Environmental Technologies Division, while Radiation Protection was located in the Life Sciences Division, where it developed into one of its core competencies. The Health Division deals with safety with ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. The knowledge of the Life Sciences, Electronics and Nuclear Technology Services is often called upon in these activities.
