Your Gateway to Radiation Safety
The Health Physics Society is a nonprofit scientific professional organization whose mission is to promote the practice of radiation safety. Since its formation in 1956, the Society has grown to approximately 6,000 scientists, physicians, engineers, lawyers, and other professionals representing academia, industry, government, national laboratories, the Department of Defense, and other organizations. Society activities include encouraging research in radiation science, developing standards, and disseminating radiation safety information. Society members are involved in understanding, evaluating, and controlling the potential risks from radiation relative to the benefits. Our Web site contains information on all Society activities and on HPS structure and objectives, membership, news and events, publications, education, and public information. You can join the Society or "Ask the Experts" using interactive features of this Web site. For general information or questions about the Society or for Society business, please

    Places to Look for Jobs
(Update 2/4/04) Added a couple more links and fixed a few broken ones. As a Health Physicist, jobs were historically few and far between. Athough prospects have improved recently, positions are still not common in many areas. Therefore, I have collected a list of sites that might possibly offer health physics or related positions. The list includes government, universities, industry, consulting, laboratory, medical, and international organizations. Of course, these organizations offer many more positions than simply health physics, so if you are looking for any type of position that would be offered with one of these organizations, feel free to peruse the sites. Most of these sites will probably not have health physics positions on them when viewed, but all have the potential for these positions, and many sites update listings weekly.

Trifoil or Radiation Warning Symbol First, the radiation warning symbol should not be confused with the civil defense symbol designed to identify fallout shelters. The latter consists of a circle divided into six equal sections, three of these sections are black and three yellow. There is no central circle. The civil defense people originally wanted to use the radiation warning symbol with the circle in the center and the three radiating magenta propellor blades but this was objected to because a fallout shelter represents safety whereas the rad warning symbol represents a hazard. Why did the Berkeley people chose this symbol? There is no answer, only speculation. One idea has it is that this symbol was used at a naval base drydock near Berkeley to warn of spinning propellors. Others imagine that the central circle is a radiation source and that the three blades represent radiation, perhaps one blade each for alpha, beta and gamma. To me, it has a striking similarity to a commercially available radiation warning sign used before 1947 at some labs that consisted of a small red dot with four or five red lightening bolts radiating outwards. The latter design was very similar to that on electrical hazard warning signs. Another thought I had was that this design was created one year after WWII and the symbol has some resemblance to the Japanese battle flag which would have been familiar to folk on the west coast.

What is the Health Physics? Health physics is the profession dedicated to the protection of the individual, the population, and the environment from the potentially harmful effects of radiation. It incorporates the principles and technical skills from many disciplines: physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, mathematics, ecology, toxicology, and industrial hygiene.
    What is Nuclear Medicine?
Nuclear Medicine is the medical specialty that utilizes the nuclear properties of radioactive and stable nuclides to make diagnostic evaluations of the anatomic and/or physiologic conditions of the body and to provide therapy with unsealed radioactive sources.

    Careers in Health Physics
    The Profession
For decades, ionizing radiation has been beneficial to humans, from treating cancer to generating electrical power. But when used in large quantity or in an unsafe way, ionizing radiation can harm living organisms. Care must be taken with nuclear reactors, nuclear weapons, high-energy particle accelerators, x-ray machines, and radionuclides used in biomedical research and therapy. This special attention helps minimize the potential for unnecessary irradiation of individuals or environmental contamination. Many industries, medical facilities, defense plants, and research laboratories demand professionals who understand radiation hazards and their prevention and control. Prominent among scientists is the health physicist, who controls the beneficial use of ionizing radiation while protecting workers and the public from potential hazards. The health physics profession is diverse and one of the most interesting and rewarding fields of scientific endeavor.
