If you are having difficulty viewing this web site click here This web site will help you take action to protect Oregon's groundwater. Groundwater is used for drinking water, agriculture, industry, and even provides water for streams. If we don't protect this valuable resource we will loose it. Do you know about the risks to groundwater in your area?
  • In some areas of Oregon, more groundwater has been drawn by wells than is replace by rainfall and snow melt. There are parts of the state that have widespread nitrate contamination of groundwater. And, there are localized cases of leaks, spills, or dumping that have polluted the groundwater.

http://intranet.siu.edu/worda/igc/
About the IGC
The Illinois Groundwater Consortium (IGC) was established in 1990 to investigate the short- and long-term effects of agricultural chemical contamination on groundwater, the environment, and, ultimately, human health and welfare. IGC members—the Illinois State Geological Survey , the Illinois State Water Survey Southern Illinois University Carbondale Southern Illinois University Edwardsville , the University of Illinois Agricultural Experiment Station , and the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension Service —have been working toward providing a scientifically valid basis for agricultural management and regulatory decisions affecting groundwater. The IGC has been funded by Congressional appropriations through the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered by SIUC's Office of Research Development and Administration . Funding for the consortium will end with the 2003 fiscal year. This web site will be maintained for some time to come to allow access to IGC research findings.
Research Emphases
The IGC has funded basic research studies on groundwater, particularly groundwater contamination and the effects of flooding on groundwater and surface water in Illinois. More recently, the consortium has emphasized the relationship between land use practices, particularly urban and industrial growth, and water quality and quantity.

Purpose of this Bulletin
The land surface was traditionally considered to be sufficient to protect the quality of underlying groundwater. It is now recognized that natural soil processes that change contaminants into harmless substances are often overwhelmed by waste products from human activities. Groundwater protection programs require an understanding of the groundwater resource. The purpose of this bulletin is to help the reader become more knowledgeable about groundwater and the terminology commonly used to describe it. A pictorial approach is used to enable the reader to quickly grasp basic groundwater terms and concepts. The information contained in this bulletin should help local government officials and citizens become informed and able to make decisions on how to protect and manage community groundwater resources.

Grand Challenges in Groundwater Remediation
Groundwater, the potable water supply for over half of the U.S. population, is increasingly threatened by organic, inorganic and radioactive pollutants. Remediation methods are extremely, potentially prohibitively, expensive and unpredictable in their success. The mathematically based numerical model is an important tool to predict and plan groundwater management programs and remediation strategies. Current limitations of this method introduce uncertainties into rational planning for many human activities, including energy production, manufacturing, agriculture, and waste disposal. Modeling efforts are hampered by three issues: the proper mathematical description of the physics and chemistry governing flow and transport, the sparsity of data characterizing any one site, and the computational power required to apply sophisticated models to realistic situations. The Grand Challenge addresses the issues of data sparsity and computational power. Advances in these two areas will provide valuable information and tools to improve the third: mathematical descriptions of the problem. The only foreseeable technology to address the computational power requirement is massively parallel computing. Both in its hardware and software aspects, this is an emerging technology. The purpose of this project is to develop this technology

THE NEW SITE:
This in a new site for UNCERT. The software is remaining freeware, but my association with the Colorado School of Mines is less well defined, and I felt it was time to move the package, as much as possible, off the CSM web server.
UNCERT:
UNCERT is a public domain uncertainty analysis and geostatistical software package. It was developed for evaluating the inherent uncertainty in describing subsurface geology, hydraulic properties, and the migration of hazardous contaminants in groundwater flow systems. The package is well suited for evaluating hazardous waste sites and evaluating remediation methods, but the package also has many general modules which are usable by researchers from a wide range of disciplines.
OTHER STUFF:
In addtion to UNCERT, I have been working on serveral other projects. The most relevent to UNCERT is the on-line Geostatistical Analysis Tutor. This is a work in progress, but the semivariogram anaysis section is largely complete. I will also be releasing command line programs I've written for things like Principle Component Analysis or Discriminant Analysis that I've found useful, but have not had the time to incorperate into UNCERT.

    LANDSIM
    What is LandSim?
    An interactive program developed by Golder Associates on behalf of the Department of the Environment/National Rivers Authority (now the Environment Agency) , LandSim uses Monte Carlo probabilistic performance assessment models constructed for new and existing landfill sites. The model essentially tracks leachate production, chemistry, migration and leakage through engineered an non-engineered structures, followed by leachate migration through the unsaturated zone to assess the ultimate impact on the aquifer.

    99. Hamilton To New Baltimore Groundwater Consortium
    groundwater is critical to communities in southwest Ohio for most, it is the only available source of water for residential, commercial, and industrial water
    http://www.gwconsortium.org/
    Groundwater is critical to communities in southwest Ohio - for most, it is the only available source of water for residential, commercial, and industrial water needs. This reliance creates a special incentive to protect valuable groundwater resources in order to insure a clean, reliable source of water for continued community growth.
    In 1991, seven major public, private, and industrial groundwater producers in southern Butler and northern Hamilton Counties, Ohio, began working on a joint groundwater protection program known as the Wellhead Protection Program (WHPP). The multi-jurisdictional, multiple supplier approach taken by Hamilton to New Baltimore Groundwater Consortium was one of Ohio's first.
    The purpose of this web page is to help those who depend on groundwater for their drinking water have a better understanding of:
    • What groundwater is;
      How groundwater can become contaminated;
      The Consortium's Wellhead Protection Program;
      What you can do to help protect your drinking water source.
