Mission of the UC Groundwater Cooperative Extension Program
"The mission of the UCCE Groundwater Hydrology Program is to provide educational and scientific/technical support on current and emerging groundwater resources and groundwater quality issues in rural areas of California " The program primarily works with the water resources industry (public water supply utilities, irrigation districts, water districts, etc.), research, planning, and regulatory agencies on the local, county, state and federal level, farm advisors in county cooperative extension, and the agricultural industry. The components of the program are: 1) an integrated basic and applied research program that emphasizes hydrogeologic processes, contaminant fate and transport in both vadose zone and groundwater, and techniques for sampling, monitoring, and mitigation of contamination and groundwater quality problems; 2) an extension program that provides educational and technical support to local, state, and federal regulatory agencies, to natural resources conservation districts, irrigation and water districts, county farm advisors and policy makers in both the agricultural and urban sectors in the state; 3) coordination of groundwater related programs and events among faculty in hydrology related areas at UC Davis, with other extension specialists and farm advisors, with federal, state and local agencies, water districts, irrigation districts, and natural resource conservation districts and other groups that are concerned with groundwater hydrology.

Arsenic contamination of groundwater
Arsenic is highly toxic and carcinogenic. Groundwater is particularly vulnerable to contamination with arsenic as a result of natural geochemical processes and problems can be exacerbated by mining activity. Even natural concentrations of arsenic in groundwater can limit its suitability for drinking. It is now apparent that arsenic contamination of groundwater is quite extensive. In the last eight years, BGS has undertaken a series of collaborative investigations into the arsenic contamination of groundwater in various countries. These investigations have included both 'mining-related' and 'natural' sources of arsenic contamination. Many of these have been undertaken with support from the UK Department for International Development ( DFID

4th International Conference
July 19th - 22nd, 2004
At the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

Bring Groundwater Quality Research to the Watershed Scale
Managing groundwater quality for human consumption, agricultural and industrial use and for ecosystem health requires moving our focus from a local site to the natural catchment or watershed scale.
Advances moving groundwater quality research to the watershed scale will be the theme of GQ 2004. This will be a research-based conference drawing together renowned researchers from around the world. Ground-breaking research initiatives, innovative investigation and interpretive techniques, novel remediation approaches and recent breakthroughs in understanding of the processes controlling groundwater quality will be presented. Over 200 abstracts have been accepted for presentation in both oral and poster sessions.

James W. Goeke, Research Hydrologist Previous Category Catalog Order Info Water is the life blood of every living creature on earth. Approximately 70 percent of the earth's surface is covered with water. Through the wonders of nature, water can take on many different forms, from the water we drink, to the ice we use to chill a glass of lemonade, to the water vapor used to steam clean equipment. It is easy to understand the significance water plays in our lives, but it may be much more difficult to understand the water that exists below the earth's surface, called groundwater. Groundwater provides approximately 85 percent of the water used for human consumption in Nebraska, yet by its very location it tends to be somewhat mysterious. Despite much available information, groundwater's existence, movement, quantity and quality remain a mystery to many. For example, some individuals think groundwater is stored in a vast underground lake; others believe Nebraska's groundwater comes from the Rocky Mountains flowing in underground rivers. These notions are incorrect descriptions of groundwater in Nebraska.
