The Groundwater Remediation Technologies Analysis Center (GWRTAC) compiles, analyzes, and disseminates information on innovative ground-water remediation technologies. GWRTAC prepares reports by technical teams chosen from Concurrent Technologies Corporation ( CTC ), the University of Pittsburgh, and other supporting institutions, and also maintains an outreach program. Dr. Dawn Kaback serves as the director of GWRTAC. Dr. Edgar Berkey continues to be involved with GWRTAC as an advisor. Ms. Diane Roote serves as GWRTAC's project manager and is supported by appropriate CTC staff scientists and engineers. Mr. Faruk Ozer provides assistance via the University of Pittsburgh. GWRTAC's activities are guided by an Advisory Committee consisting of highly qualified members of the ground-water remediation community. NOTICE: It was with great sadness that we experienced the death of our GWRTAC co-director, Dr. Frederick G. Pohland, on January 9, 2004. Dr. Pohland was an instrumental part of GWRTAC since 1995. Professor and Edward R. Weidlein Chair of Environmental Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Pohland died peacefully after a short illness. Dr. Pohland was active in many professional organizations, including the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Academy of Environmental Engineering, and the National Academy of Engineering. He received numerous honors and awards and authored over 150 technical and scientific publications in his field. Although we miss him deeply, we are proud to announce the creation of a memorial fund in honor of Dr. Pohland. Please click on the

Groundwater is rain water that has filtered into (or recharged ) the ground and then stays beneath the surface like water in a wet sponge. All soil materials fill with water, although we usually think of groundwater being located in coarser soil materials such as sand or gravel, zones called aquifers where the water can easily be obtained and used. Finer soils, like silts, clays, and intact rocks, ( confining beds ) yield water only very slowly. Groundwater can be observed when it fills a well to a level called the water table . It moves from areas with a high water table to areas with a low water table, but at a very slow rate, usually only inches per day even in the most productive aquifers. Over a long time, groundwater discharges to surface water bodies such as lakes, wetlands, streams, rivers, and the ocean. Groundwater provides "base flow" for rivers - that's why they keep running after the rain has stopped falling. Groundwater is the major source of drinking water for citizens in the eastern, southern, and western (Vashon and Maury Islands) parts of King County, beyond the area supplied by the

University Consortium Solvents-in-Groundwater
Research Program The University Consortium Solvents-in-Groundwater Research Program is a large university-based research program directed at the behaviour, fate, and remediation of chlorinated solvents in the subsurface.
The Consortium Research Program began in 1987 with the goal of advancing the understanding of the behaviour, fate and remediation of chlorinated solvents in groundwater. Of the various types of industrial contaminants that afflict groundwater, the chlorinated solvent problem is the most important to industry because it occurs at many thousands of sites, it is long lasting, it typically extends deeper than other contaminants and is very mobile in the dissolved form, which causes large plumes. Billions of dollars have been spent characterizing and remediating sites, but no significant sites have been permanently restored and many site characterizations are found deficient when issues of risk assessment, natural resource damage, or natural attenuation become paramount. Although pump-and-treat has stabilized many plumes, many of the pumping systems will be required in perpetuity because of large source zone mass. The research program derives advantage from long-term experimental use of a shallow sand aquifer at a military base 50 km northwest of Toronto (the Borden site). At this site many experiments have been completed and several new ones are in progress, in which chlorinated solvents were released into the aquifer followed by intensive monitoring with remediation trials to assess technology performance. The performance assessments are more quantitative than is possible at real sites because of the detailed knowledge about the solvent mass put into the aquifer. The Borden aquifer has sufficient natural complexity to provide insights into real site issues.

Genesis of high arsenic groundwater in the Bengal Delta Plains, West-Bengal and Bangladesh
Division of Land and Water Resources, Thesis Report Series 1999:18
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden
ABSTRACT
The high arsenic groundwater of the Bengal Delta Plain (BDP) in India as well as in Bangladesh, has become a priority health issue. A large population (
Arsenopyrite (FeAsS) and/or pyrite (FeS ) are the primary source of arsenic in natural systems. In sedimentary systems, arsenic is also adsorbed onto the reactive surfaces of secondary oxides and hydroxides of iron, aluminium and manganese (HFO, HAO and HMO). An aerobic (1) and an anaerobic (2) hypothesis have been put forward to explain the mobilisation of the arsenic in the groundwater. 1) When groundwater is withdrawn, oxygen may enter the aquifer and oxidise the primary sulphides and subsequently releases arsenic and sulphate in groundwater. 2) Alternately, arsenic may be derived as a result of desorption and reductive dissolution of the surface reactive mineral phases such as hydrous ferric, aluminium and manganese oxides (HFO, HAO and HMO) present as coatings in the aquifer sediments. Phosphate is adsorbed onto HFO in a similar way as arsenic. The mechanism of arsenic and phosphate is initialised by anoxic water in the aquifers.
Watersamples from wells in Chakdaha, West-Bengal, India and Bangladesh were analysed for a number of chemical parameters. Some porewater/BAT-point samples were also taken from a depth of 3 to 5 meters in Chakdaha and compared with the well samples. The groundwater was found to be neutral to slightly alkaline and essentially Ca-HCO

Groundwater needs protection
In recent years, however, a number of events affecting groundwater quality have contributed to a heightened public awareness and concern about the importance and vulnerability of the resource. Media reports about the contamination of wells from leaking gasoline storage tanks or dry cleaning solvents, and about the effects on groundwater of chemical leakage from landfill or industrial waste disposal sites have raised public concerns about groundwater quality. Early in 1990, chemical seepage, caused by the tire fire at Hagersville, Ontario, threatened to pollute groundwater supplies in that region. Newspaper reports alerted area residents and helped focus attention on the problem of groundwater pollution. Even where we might not use it directly as a drinking water supply we must still protect groundwater, since it will carry contaminants and pollutants from the land into the lakes and rivers from which other people get a large percentage of their freshwater supply. Groundwater and geology Groundwater is also important quite apart from its value as a resource or its close connection with surface water supplies. Engineers must consider groundwater when planning almost any kind of structure, either above or below the ground. Ignoring the effect of groundwater on slope stability can be both costly and dangerous. Geologists see groundwater as a major force in geological change. The fluid pressures exerted by groundwater, for example, play an important role in the occurrence of earthquakes. Geologists also know that the movement of water through underground geologic formations controls the migration and the accumulation of petroleum and the formation of some ore deposits.
