Grounded Theory

Grounded Theory Grounded theory is a general methodology applicable to both quantitative as well as qualitative studies . A major argument of this methodology is that multiple perspectives must be systematically sought as part of the research inquiry. More specifically, Grounded theory methodology is a highly developed, rigorous set of procedures for producing substantive theory of social phenomena. This approach to the analysis of qualitative data simultaneously employs techniques of induction, deduction, and verification to develop theory (Schwandt, 1997) . In this method theory can be generated initially from the data or if existing theories seem appropriate to the area of investigation, then these may be elaborated and modified as incoming data are meticulously played against them S More information about Grounded Theory

Grounded theory is a method that has been used extensively across a variety of social science disciplines. The basic tenet of this approach is that a theory must emerge from the data, or in other words, a theory must be grounded in the data. Hence the approach purports to be inductive rather than deductive. As defined by two of its major proponents, "the grounded theory approach is a qualitative research method that uses a systematic set of procedures to develop an inductively derived grounded theory about a phenomenon". The intent is to develop an account of a phenomenon that identifies the major constructs, or categories in grounded theory terms, their relationships, and the context and process, thus providing a theory of the phenomenon that is much more than a descriptive account. Grounded theory aims to be a rigorous method by providing detailed and systematic procedures for data collection, analysis and theorising, but it is also concerned with the quality of emergent theory. Strauss and Corbin provide four central criteria for a good grounded theory: it should fit the phenomenon, provided it has been carefully derived from diverse data and is faithful to the everyday reality of the area; it should provide understanding, and be comprehensible to both the persons studied and others involved in the area; it should provide generality, given that the data are comprehensive, the interpretation conceptual and broad, and the theory includes extensive variation and is abstract enough to be applicable to a wide variety of contexts in the area; and it should provide control, in the sense of stating the conditions under which the theory applies and providing a basis for action in the area.

Introduction
This paper summarizes the principal findings of research that sought to provide a comprehensive understanding of the environmental scanning process. The methodology used was of major importance in obtaining data that are grounded largely in the personal experience of managers, but also in documentary evidence and in direct observation by the researcher. The purpose of the study was to investigate how managers in the Portuguese chemical industry scan their environment for information, what are the contextual factors that affect this activity, and also how managers' perceptions of environmental change affect the strategic change they implement.
Methodology and research design
Methodology
In the context of this research, the case study was considered appropriate for providing a holistic approach to the study of environmental scanning in industrial organizations operating in the chemical industry. In creating the case study, several types of data and information were collected, including general data about the industry and specific information about the companies that agreed to participate.

Male Femaling. A grounded theory approach to cross-dressing and sex-changing
Richard Ekins
pb, pp 185.
While primarily a scholarly work, this seventeen year analysis (to the present day) of cross dressing and sex-changing, has much to offer the interested lay reader. However, anyone put off by academic works would do well to steer clear, as much of the book is taken up with social theory and can be a turgid read. Hidden within, however, there are many interesting stories, analysis, and a well thought out theory, showing the many and varied practices of men challenging the male role. Richard Ekins spends much of the book explaining his 'grounded theory' approach, again, important to researchers/students, less so for the rest of us, and can be mainly skipped (as the author himself suggests). As its name implies, grounded theory demands 'intimate appreciation of the arena studied.... (written up) in terms of theoretical analyses.' Moreover, there is an acknowledgement of the theory emerging in 'interplay between the researcher and the data.' Ekins thus, over nearly 2 decades, entered the transgender community, forming bonds and having interactions with thousands of 'male femalers'. The concept 'male femalers' allows Ekins to cover all aspects of cross dressing and sex changing, the male becoming 'female' in all its various guises and differing social contexts. This is subdivided into 'body femaling', 'erotic femaling' and 'gender femaling', and their 'inter-relations in terms of the various facets of sex, sexuality and gender'. This lends itself to the widest interpretation of this transgressive act, and most 'male femalers' will find stories they can identify with.

ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION
"It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data". . . Sherlock Holmes
Grounded theory is a qualitative methodology which derives its name from the practice of generating theory from research which is "grounded" in data. Formally introduced by the sociologists Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss in The Discovery of Grounded Theory (1967), this methodology emerged as an alternative strategy to more traditional approaches to scientific inquiry which relied heavily on hypothesis testing, verificational techniques, and quantitative forms of analysis which were particularly popular in the social sciences at that time. Whereas many of the central components of grounded theory were outlined in The Discovery (e.g., constant comparison, theoretical sampling, coding procedures, etc.), subsequent publications by Glaser and Strauss writing alone or with others, began to reflect important differences in how these scholars envisioned grounded theory and its use. As a result, it can be argued rather convincingly (see Glaser, 1992) that two somewhat distinct methodologies have evolved based on the original work, each with its own underlying epistemology and attendant properties.
