    • GROUNDED THEORY
DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND ITS CONTEXT
Grounded theory method OF QUALITATIVE research is an INDUCTIVE approach that uses a systematic set of procedures to arrive at a theory about basic social processes. The aim of this approach is to discover underlying social forces that shape human behavior by means of INTERVIEWS with open-ended questions and through skilled OBSERVATIONS (LoBiondo-Wood and Haber, 1994).
RULES / ASSUMPTIONS FOR USING THE DESIGN
    • An exhaustive literature review is not done to allow theory to emerge directly from the data and remain "grounded in" the data. Literature is reviewed continuously throughout data collection and analysis. Sample includes people who are experiencing the social process being investigated. When describing the findings, descriptive language must be used to provide reader with steps in the process and the logic of the method.

References Background Research into health related quality of life (HRQoL) in schizophrenia has predominantly been conducted using lengthy interviewer administered questionnaires, many of which have not been validated for use with schizophrenic samples. The present study seeks to address the dearth of qualitative research by conducting a small-scale qualitative exploration of the impact of schizophrenia on HRQoL. Method Results Ten HRQoL domains were identified as being important: (1) barriers placed on relationships; (2) reduced control of behaviours and actions; (3) loss of opportunity to fulfil occupational roles; (4) financial constraints on activities and plans; (5) subjective experience of psychotic symptoms; (6) side effects and attitudes to medication; (7) psychological responses to living with schizophrenia; (8) labelling and attitudes from others; (9) concerns for the future and (10) positive outcomes from experiences.

Back to Types of Qualitative Observational Research In this approach, researchers are responsible for developing other theories that emerge from observing a group. The theories are "grounded" in the group's observable experiences, but researchers add their own insight into why those experiences exist. In essence, grounded theory attempts to "reach a theory or conceptual understanding through step wise, inductive process" (Banning 1995).

PhD: experiential research and everyday grounded theory [This text was drafted a couple of weeks back, but I didn't have time to finish it…] Recent discussion on weblog research ethics made me thinking more about my own ways of researching weblogs. The first thing is pretty obvious: I'm not an observer, I'm a participant . Not sure what would be the best "research methodology label" for it. I would think about action research , but I'm far from pushing any specific actions in my blogging community (or, may be, there is an element of provoking a bit more reflection :) At OKLC I had an opportunity to talk with Jean Lave (she was giving a keynote). We talked about ways of studying practices and choices about degrees of a researcher involvement. I was sharing my concern of not being "objective" by being part of the community I study and then found out that we both appreciated how rich could be researchers' understanding of a phenomenon if they experienced it. I feel more confident now trading objectivity for richness and depth :) Talking about weblog research: I'm a bit sceptical reading research papers by people who are not blogging themselves. I value their contribution a lot, understanding that taking different approaches we are more likely to get a richer picture of this whole thing, but I'm still very happy being on another end. Some people would think I'm addicted so much that I can't step out for my research. I think differently: I'm experiential learner (or experiential researcher, if you want).

    Grounded Theory
A & Gorbin,J: Basics of Qualitative Research Grounded Theoryn eli aineistopohjaisen teorian Kateg. 1

    Grounded Theory
Grounded theory was developed in the 1960s. It was a reaction to the dominance of quantitative research methods in which a theory is formed then an empirical study is carried out to discover whether the hypothesis is proven. Grounded theory is the opposite: a theory is systematically verified by the collection and analysis of data. Any research has three major components: collecting data, interpreting data and producing research reports. In traditional research the theory is developed as a separate component before these three are tackled, and is not reviewed until the data has been collected and interpreted. In grounded theory research the theory is grounded in the data, which is to say that it is reviewed and revised as necessary at any point in the process. There are seven main features of grounded theory research.
