Employee Needs and Expectations in the Irish Voluntary Sector
Mr Serge Basini Dr Finian Buckley AUTHORS Mr Serge Basini is a research fellow and part-time lecturer in Strategic Human Resource Management in DCU Business School (EMail: basinis@dcu.ie Dr Finian Buckley (EMail: buckleyf@dcu.ie ABSTRACT Little research exists on the work needs and expectations of employees in the Irish Voluntary Sector. The paper presents the preliminary findings of the first nation-wide survey of voluntary organisations, focusing on the psycho-social variables underpinning work. The survey employed the Meaning Of Working (MOW) questionnaire, widely used in European work-vales research. Results from the 259 respondent voluntary organisations are compared with a private sector population, and indicate significant differences in employee work values, reward expectations and job involvement. The results are discussed and implications for the management and development of the Irish Voluntary Sector are advanced. INTRODUCTION . Levy (1993) highlights this significance when he claimed that membership of this sector in the USA is upwards of 561,000 organisations, with an estimated spending power of over $300 billion per annum. There is little doubt that third sector organisations are also making a direct and substantial contribution to contemporary Irish life. For instance, Fleishman (1995) indicates that the expenditure of this sector in Ireland, as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product, is approximately 3.4%.

ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION
"It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data". . . Sherlock Holmes
Grounded theory is a qualitative methodology which derives its name from the practice of generating theory from research which is "grounded" in data. Formally introduced by the sociologists Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss in The Discovery of Grounded Theory (1967), this methodology emerged as an alternative strategy to more traditional approaches to scientific inquiry which relied heavily on hypothesis testing, verificational techniques, and quantitative forms of analysis which were particularly popular in the social sciences at that time. Whereas many of the central components of grounded theory were outlined in The Discovery (e.g., constant comparison, theoretical sampling, coding procedures, etc.), subsequent publications by Glaser and Strauss writing alone or with others, began to reflect important differences in how these scholars envisioned grounded theory and its use. As a result, it can be argued rather convincingly (see Glaser, 1992) that two somewhat distinct methodologies have evolved based on the original work, each with its own underlying epistemology and attendant properties.

Anselm L. Strauss
18th December 1916 - 5th September 1996
Sociologist Anselm Strauss, 79, died on the 5th September in San Francisco of a heart attack. Professor Emeritus at the University of California, San Francisco, Strauss was internationally known as a social science methodologist and as a medical sociologist, especially for his pioneering attention to the problems of chronic illness. Strauss developed an innovative method of qualitative research called grounded theory, with sociologist Barney Glaser, which was widely adopted in sociology, nursing, education and social work. An alumnus of the University of Virginia, Strauss received both Master's and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He came to the University of California, San Francisco in 1960 at the behest of the dean of nursing to teach research methods in a new doctoral program in nursing, the first in the Western USA. He had built this research unit into a full-fledged doctoral program in sociology by 1968. As Professor, Founder, Chair and visionary of the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Strauss forged a unique focus on health, illness and qualitative research. He became Professor Emeritus in 1987, but continued teaching and researching until his death. Strauss' inquiries into medical work included studies of dying patients, an array of chronic illnesses, the psychology of pain, psychiatric practice, kinds of medical work, risk and the politics of medical care. During the course of a long career, he made contributions to several other branches of sociology as well, including urban sociology and social psychology.

Grounded Theory is most accurately described as a research method in which the theory is developed from the data, rather than the other way around. That makes this is an inductive approach, meaning that it moves from the specific to the more general. The method of study is essentially based on three elements: concepts, categories and propositions, or what was originally called hypotheses. However, concepts are the key elements of analysis since the theory is developed from the conceptualization of data, rather than the actual data. bodyOffer(33061) Grounded theory is often perceived as a method which separates theory and data but others insist that the method actually combines the two. Data collection, analysis and theory formulation are undeniably connected in a reciprocal sense, and the grounded theory approach incorporates explicit procedures to guide this. This is especially evident in that according to grounded theory, the processes of asking questions and making comparisons are specifically detailed to inform and guide analysis and to facilitate theorizing process. For example, it is specifically stated that the research questions must be open and general rather than formed as specific hypotheses, and that the emergent theory should account for a phenomenon that is relevant to participants.

Abstract : This contribution discusses an initiative for promoting Grounded Theory Methodology (GTM) in a developing country. First, it will describe the current research activities as well as the common obstacles that researchers might encounter. Second, the methodology will be introduced. Last, it will introduce web pages of on-line articles, article references, mailing list, and other related issues. Introduction This short essay briefly describes a research initiative in a developing country. A developing country will be loosely defined as a country that is still in its developing stage. It usually has many shortages such as lack of funding, less productivity, low effectively/efficiency, etc. The scope will be limited to the introduction of a research methodology called grounded theory. Although this is a case of a specific developing country, it may give a general idea about what is going on in developing countries as well as how to cope with emerged issues. [1] This paper is divided into five sections. Following this introduction, several issues in regard of the research activities and the researchers' conditions will be described. Next, it will introduce the grounded theory methodology, as well as a brief explanation on why it could be applied to encourage research in a developing country. The next section will elaborate on on-line resources that are available on the web. Finally, a short conclusion section will close this article. [2]
