It also explains clearly that grounded theory, Glaser style, is an emergent methodology. It provides some arguments to support that approach. Glaser (1998) is also relevant for beginners in grounded theory and is intended as a textbook for beginners.
  • index Overview Grounded theory begins with a research situation. Within that situation, your task as researcher is to understand what is happening there, and how the players manage their roles. You will mostly do this through observation, conversation and interview. After each bout of data collection you note down the key issues: this I have labelled " note-taking Constant comparison is the heart of the process. At first you compare interview (or other data) to interview (or other data). Theory emerges quickly. When it has begun to emerge you compare data to theory.

Abstract
This paper outlines a particular approach to building theory that was employed in a recent doctoral research project ( Pandit , 1995). Three aspects used in conjunction indicate the project's novelty: firstly, the systematic and rigorous application of the grounded theory method; secondly, the use of on-line computerised databases as a primary source of data; and, thirdly, the use of a qualitative data analysis software package to aid the process of grounded theory building.
Introduction
The principal objective of this paper is to reveal how the style of qualitative research known as the 'grounded theory approach' was applied in a research project ( Pandit , 1995) which attempted to generate a theoretical framework of corporate turnaround. Two lesser auxiliary objectives are firstly, to assess the utility of on-line computerised databases as a primary source of data for this type of research; and secondly, to assess the extent to which computer-based qualitative data analysis (QDA) software can aid this type of research. In the next section the elements of grounded theory are recalled. This is followed by a detailed account of the procedures and rationale of grounded theory building as employed in the project. Next, the generated theory of corporate turnaround is overviewed and finally, a reflexive account of the research experience is given.

Introduction to
Grounded Theory
By Steve Borgatti Discussion drawn from:

Goals and Perspective
The phrase "grounded theory" refers to theory that is developed inductively from a corpus of data. If done well, this means that the resulting theory at least fits one dataset perfectly. This contrasts with theory derived deductively from grand theory, without the help of data, and which could therefore turn out to fit no data at all. Grounded theory takes a case rather than variable perspective, although the distinction is nearly impossible to draw. This means in part that the researcher takes different cases to be wholes, in which the variables interact as a unit to produce certain outcomes. A case-oriented perspective tends to assume that variables interact in complex ways, and is suspicious of simple additive models, such as ANOVA with main effects only. Part and parcel of the case-orientation is a comparative orientation. Cases similar on many variables but with different outcomes are compared to see where the key causal differences may lie. This is based on John Stuart Mills' (1843, A system of logic: Ratiocinative and Inductive) method of differences essentially the use of (natural) experimental design. Similarly, cases that have the same outcome are examined to see which conditions they all have in common, thereby revealing necessary causes.

11. Introduction
Using grounded theory to Interpret Interviews This paper compares two studies that employ grounded theory to investigate information systems development tools.

Using Grounded Theory to Interpret Interviews Linda Jo Calloway (lcalloway@pace.edu) Constance A. Knapp (cknapp@pace.edu) Pace University School of Computer Science and Information Systems One Pace Plaza New York, New York 10038

Introduction
Studying the context in which information systems development tools are meant to function requires an appropriate research methodology. The two studies illustrate the use of such a methodology. In these studies grounded theory, an ethnographic approach, is used to capture information needed to explicate the interactions between teams and information systems development tools, and organizations and information systems development tools. According to Glaser and Strauss (1967) theories are either deduced from logical assumptions or generated from observation. Grounded theory is a qualitative approach that generates theory from observation. It provides the structure often lacking in other qualitative approaches without sacrificing flexibility or rigor. The resulting theory is an explanation of categories, their properties, and the relationships among them. The results lead to an evolutionary body of knowledge that is grounded in data.

The Studies
This comparison illustrates ways in which grounded theory can be used to analyze and understand interview data. The first study assesses the use of a software engineering tool, dialog charts, by systems designers (Calloway, 1988). The second study investigates organizations that use Integrated Computer-Aided Software Engineering (ICASE) tools (Knapp, 1995). We discuss the similarities and differences in the methods of information generation, data collection, data analysis and reduction, and data synthesis.

A Comment on the Application of Grounded Theory to Accounting Research
Philip H. Siegel, Fiesta Mart Chair of Accounting
University of Houston-Downtown Recently accounting researchers have begun to explore and apply grounded research to behaviorally based problems (c.f. Blank et al. 1991; Siegel et al. 1994). Grounded theory is a qualitative approach which can be used to analyze social processes that are present within human interactions. Application of the theory results in explanations of important social processes or structures that are derived (grounded) in the empirical data. The grounded theory approach is based on the idea that a group or groups share specific social psychological problems that are not necessarily articulated (Glaser and Strauss 1967). Grounded theory is a form of field-studies that systematically applies procedural steps to develop an exploration about a particular phenomenon. As Strauss and Corbin (1990) explain:
A grounded theory, is one that is inductively derived from the study of the phenomenon it represents. That is, it is discovered, developed, and provisionally verified through systematic data. collection and analysis of data pertaining to that phenomenon. Therefore, data collection, analysis, and theory stand in reciprocal relationship with each other. One does not begin with a theory, then prove it. Rather, one begins with an area of study and what is relevant to that area is allowed to emerge.
The objective of grounded theory is the discovery of theoretically comprehensive explanations about particular phenomenon. The techniques and analytical procedures enable investigators to develop a substantive theory that is significant, theory-observation compatible, generalizable, reproducible and rigorous.

Constructivist Grounded Theory?
Barney G. Glaser
Abstract : I refer to and use as scholarly inspiration CHARMAZ's excellent article on constructivist grounded theory as a tool of getting to the fundamental issues on why grounded theory is not constructivist. I show that constructivist data, if it exists at all, is a very very small part of the data that grounded theory uses. Key words grounded theory, constructivism, constructivist data Notes References Author Citation Download: 144 kb Discuss this Article: Discussion Board Constructivist Grounded Theory (GT) is a misnomer. GT can use any data; it remains to be figured out what it is. In my book "The Grounded Theory Perspective" (GLASER, 2001) I wrote a chapter (11) that dealt with "all is data." I said: "'All is data' is a well known Glaser dictum. What does it mean? It means exactly what is going on in the research scene is the data, whatever the source, whether interview, observations, documents, in whatever combination. It is not only what is being told, how it is being told and the conditions of its being told, but also all the data surrounding what is being told. It means what is going on must be figured out exactly what it is is to be used for, that is conceptualization, not for accurate description. Data is always as good as far as it goes, and there is always more data to keep correcting the categories with more relevant properties." (p.145) [1] "All is Data" data, interpreted data or vague data. There is no such thing for GT as bias data or subjective or objective data or misinterpreted data. It is what the researcher is receiving, as a pattern, and as a human being (which is inescapable). It just depends on the research. [2]

16 Grounded theory (1) Speaking only for myself ... These days, "grounded theory" is usually taken to mean the approach of that name initiated by Glaser and Strauss. Or, more often, the later elaborations of Strauss and Corbin. There is a sense, however, in which you might talk about theory grounded in data or experience. I think "grounded theory" is an appropriate term for that, too. It is in this more generic sense that I wish to talk about grounded theory here. Action research is well placed to develop this form of grounded theory. In this form, theory development observes well the intention of the earlier Glaser and Strauss work. Theory is developed progressively as the data are collected. It has local relevance and is practical. Glaser, Barney G. and Strauss, Anselm L. Both trained in Sociology. Glaser at Columbia, Strauss at Chicago. (Columbia was known for theory and for quantitative studies; Chicago was known for qualitative, empirical work that was criticized for lack of integration with theory.) Both ended up at UCSF, a hotbed of social science and medicine (as in, medical anthropology, medical sociology, nursing, etc.). They started working with nurses in ethnographic settings. Wrote The Discovery as a way to justify and provide rigor for qualitative and inductive methods. The two then had a terrible falling out which included strong criticism, name-calling and legal action. Strauss died in 1996 (Sept. 5). Glaser seems to have had the deeper understanding of grounded theory. In particular, he emphasized that grounded theory was about theory generation, not verification, and that verication is outside the scope of grounded theory.

  • GROUNDED THEORY
DESCRIPTION OF DESIGN AND ITS CONTEXT
Grounded theory method OF QUALITATIVE research is an INDUCTIVE approach that uses a systematic set of procedures to arrive at a theory about basic social processes. The aim of this approach is to discover underlying social forces that shape human behavior by means of INTERVIEWS with open-ended questions and through skilled OBSERVATIONS (LoBiondo-Wood and Haber, 1994).
RULES / ASSUMPTIONS FOR USING THE DESIGN
  • An exhaustive literature review is not done to allow theory to emerge directly from the data and remain "grounded in" the data. Literature is reviewed continuously throughout data collection and analysis. Sample includes people who are experiencing the social process being investigated. When describing the findings, descriptive language must be used to provide reader with steps in the process and the logic of the method.
