  • Chemical Symbol: Au Atomic Number: Atomic weight: Specific Gravity: 19.3 (19.3 times as heavy as an equivalent volume of water; twice as heavy as pure lead; 1 cubic foot weighs over 1/2 ton) Hardness: 2.5-3 on the Moh's hardness scale (teeth are harder, miners are sometimes pictured biting nuggets to test the authenticity - fool's gold is harder) Melting point: 1,945 degrees F Boiling point: 5,378 degrees F Crystal System: Cubic Gold is the most malleable and ductile of all metals. One ounce of gold can be stretched into a wire more than 40 miles long. Gold can be worked into a layer 1 millionth of an inch thick (it has been used on the face masks of astronaut's space suits as a shield). Gold is Inert , therefore it does not corrode. Gold is an excellent conductor of electricity All of the gold ever mined in all of human history would fill a cube only 60 feet on a side!

http://www.kinross.com/op/mine-fort-knox/geology.html
The Fort Knox mining and exploration properties are located within the Fairbanks mining district, a southwest - northeast trending belt of lode and placer gold deposits that comprise one of the largest gold producing areas in the state of Alaska. The Fairbanks district is situated in the northwestern part of the Yukon - Tanana Uplands. The Yukon - Tanana terrane consists of a thick sequence of Precambrian to upper Paleozoic polymetamorphic rocks dominanted by the Fairbanks Schist. It is comprised of gray to brown fine-grained micaceous schist and micaceous quartzite. Interlayered with the Fairbanks Schist is the Cleary Sequence, a varied assemblage of metamorphic lithologies. In the northern part of the district high-grade metamorphic rocks of the Chatanika terrane have been identified. These rocks, which are in fault contact with the Fairbanks Schist and Cleary Sequence, are thought to be Devonian to Mississippian in age, and have been metamorphosed to eclogite facies. The dominant structural trend of the district is expressed by numerous northeast trending faults and shear zones which were important to the localization of gold mineralization.

http://www.kinross.com/op/mine-porcupine/geology.html
The Porcupine Gold Camp, located in the Archean Abitibi greenstone belt at Timmins, Ontario has been the most productive gold-producing field in North America with total historic production is in excess of 62Moz of gold. This production has come from quartz-carbonate lode systems hosted within greenshist-facies metamorphic along a corridor up to 10km wide paralleling the regional Destor Porcupine Fault The rocks within this corridor consist of the younger Timiskaming Group conglomerates, greywackes and slates, underlain by Keewatin Series volcanics and locally intercalated sediments. The Keewatin is subdivided into the lower Dolero Group comprising a lower suite of mainly basaltic and andesitic flows and an upper succession of dacitic flows and dacite-rhyolite pyroclastics with stacked Algoma-type iron formations. Dolero Group rocks are overlain by the Tisdale Group, which consists of a basal ultramafic volcanics and basaltic komatiites, and an upper variolitic tholeiitic basalt capped by calcalkaline dacitic volcaniclastics. Most of the gold in the district has been found within Tisdale Group basalts often spatially associated with porphyritic felsic stocks. Alteration and stockwork fracturing increase in intensity towards mineralized centers. Pervasive and fracture-controlled sericite, ferroan dolomite-ankerite, silica, albite, chlorite, and tourmaline alteration mark mineralized centers. Selective and vein-veinlet chloritization and carbonatization, and less intense hydrothermal fracturing typify distal alteration.

The photogeology
The use of aerial photographs to obtain both qualitative and quantitative geologic information is referred to as photogeology. Aerial photographs are widely used today for identifying and mapping landforms, drainage patterns, structural features such as faults and folds, and rock or lithologic Units. Knowledge of the surface attributes of a landscape also enables a geologist to infer or predict subsurface characteristics and relationships. Airphotos are routinely scanned for the following types of geologic studies:
  • compiling topographic and geologic maps
  • exploring for mineral, hydrocarbon, and groundwater deposits
  • identifying hazardous features or sites such as active earthquake faults and areas prone to landslides
  • identifying and mapping landscape changes caused by a natural hazard event such as a hurricane or earthquake
  • selecting potential construction sites for critically engineered facilities such as dams or harbours.

    THE GOLD
    Chemical solubility of gold
This is a very complex issue that can't be resolved with a certainty in an overall approach. What follows is only a broad vision of some specific conditions that can play part in oxidation of primary gold deposits. Gold occurs in pyrite in three forms:
    • (1) Sub-microscopic, perhaps in the lattice of pyrite
    • (2) As native gold in small blebs, droplets and ramifying masses
    • (3) As irregular masses, plates and grains along fractures, slips and seams or coating of pyrite crystals
The aqueous chemistry of gold is essentially that of complex ions since the ions Au and Au are unstable in water because of their high oxidation potentials. Complexing agents such as (S O or (CN) or an excess of Cl give soluble complexes of the type [Au(S O [Au(CN) and [AuCl which render gold highly mobile in solution. Some humic complexes have the same facility.

    Delta Gold N.L.
Talk given to the Geological Society of Australia Annual Conference, Ballarat, Victoria, 1992 ABSTRACT
    Geological Society of Australia
    Abstracts Number 32, Ballarat 1992.
Gold was first discovered in the Kanowna area, approximately 20 kilometres northeast of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia, in 1893. Gold mining in the area peaked in 1898 with the production of 152,000 ounces from vein-hosted and alluvial sources. From 1911, production became sporadic and declined rapidly before ceasing in 1946.
Interest in Kanowna surged again in 1979 as the gold price rose, resulting in increased exploration activity and, in 1986, the recommencement of mining at Kanowna. Total gold production from the Kanowna area is approximately one million ounces.
Exploration for additional mineralisation in the Kanowna area focussed on extending, or finding repetitions of known vein deposits and deep leads. Minor success was achieved on both fronts leading to the open pit mine on the old Ballarat and Last Chance vein systems (Delta Gold 67.5%, Pancontinental Mining 32.5%) and the commencement, after the amalgamation of leases to form the Golden Valley Joint Venture (Delta Gold 50%, Peko Gold 50%), of mining the deep leads for heap-leach treatment at the QED operation.
Using proven mineralisation concepts for the area, the GVJV employed the established techniques of soil geochemistry and RAB drilling to explore for vein and deep lead deposits.

A Brief Description of Major Gold Deposits of Saskatchewan
The people of Saskatchewan not directly concerned with mining are scarcely aware of the mineral potential of the province. We are the prime source of Potash and Uranium in the world. We also have and have had "world class" gold mines in our province. The recognition that Saskatchewan geology provides the framework and vast potential for truly world class mines has been slow in coming. Gold, that most elusive of noble metals, is abundant in our Precambrian shield areas. The surface has barely been scratched, the potential has barely been touched at this point. Some excellent reference books are available to those who would wish to delve further. The best and most accessible "Gold in Saskatchewan" (Open File Report 84-1) is available from the Department of Mineral Resources' Core Lab in La Ronge or the main office in Regina. Beginnings are vague The Churchill subprovince We are fortunate that "our" rocks have trapped and crystallized a vast amount of gold. Gold sightings over the years can be traced from those first reports by canoeists in the early 1900s spotting visible gold in quartz veins in Western Craton outcrops on Pine Channel (north shore of Lake Athabasca). This predated visible gold discovered at Amisk Lake (The Prince Albert Deposit) in 1914. Exploration/ prospecting during and immediately after the first world war resulted in further discoveries related to the original Pine Channel and Amisk Lake showings. In the early 1930's the north shore of Lake Athabasca saw renewed exploration initiated by the discovery of yet more gold. The Box Mine resulted.
