The California Gold Rush
In January of 1848, James Marshall had a work crew camped on the American River at Coloma near Sacramento. The crew was building a saw mill for John Sutter. On the cold, clear morning of January 24, Marshall found a few tiny gold nuggets. Thus began one of the largest human migrations in history as a half-million people from around the world descended upon California in search of instant wealth. The first printed notice of the discovery was in the March 15 issue of "The Californian" in San Francisco. Shortly after Marshall's discovery, General John Bidwell discovered gold in the Feather River and Major Pearson B. Reading found gold in the Trinity River. The Gold Rush was soon in full sway. In 1849, quartz mining began at the Mariposa mine in Mariposa County. Gold deposits were often found inside quartz veins. In 1850, California became a state. Also that year, gold-bearing quartz was found at Gold Hill in Grass Valley. This led to the development of the great underground mines in that district and a major industry the continued for more than 100 years. In 1851, Gold was discovered in Greenhorn Creek, Kern County. This discovery led to the rush to the upper Kern River region. By 1852, California's annual gold production reach a then all-time high of $81 million.

Cripple Creek, Teller County, Colorado
This page is dedicated to the mines and miners of Cripple Creek, Teller County, Colorado, USA. Cripple Creek is located about 45 miles west of Colorado Springs, CO. This area is most famous for its gold telluride ores which produced vast amounts of gold ore after metallurgists discovered how to extract gold from the ore. One of the most famous mines was the Cresson Mine in which was found a massive walk-in gold vug. All in all the Cresson produced over $51,000,000 up thru 1961 and the entire area over $450,000,000. Some ore samples produced over 20 oz/ton of gold.
Over 20,000 ounces of gold ore in crystalline form alone were
scraped from the cavity walls in the Cresson Mine the first few days after the vug discovery.
The minerals pictured on the following page are the genuine article due to two strokes of luck:
1) I was lucky enough to have been given them by a kind old rockhound, Henry Norek, many years ago. It turns out that his father-in-law, Allison J. Gunn, was one of the primary assayers in Cripple Creek during the boom years. The kind old rockhound that gave me the historical specimens passed away on September 14, 1998. Henry Norek had the wisdom to see that the specimens would be preserved by someone that cared. Click here to see Allison J. Gunn's business card....

Other Features
An irregular piece of gold, 3 mm long, in quartz from the Callery valley, Southern Alps. This gold formed less than one million years ago, by hot water processes near the Alpine Fault . Similar processes formed gold in the mountains that made up Otago 150 million years ago. Historically, the Geology Department grew out of the Otago School of Mines which was an important part of the University of Otago during the gold rushes and subsequent gol d mining industry. Today, we have an active research programme (see also our publication list ) studying many aspects of Otago gold, still in close co ntact with the mining industry. The following account links our research on the geology of gold in Otago to mineral exploration, mining, mineral processing, and subsequent environmental considerations. Serpentine Diggings, Central Otago. A gold-mining ghost town, with the only remaining building being the old church. This scene is typical of Otago's tussock-grass covered uplands. Gold-bearing quartz veins are exposed at the surface on the hills in the distance, and alluvial gold workings are scattered in the streams in the foreground.

Gold Districts of California
ALLEGHANY Location. Alleghany is in southwestern Sierra County. This district is in a belt of gold mineralization that extends from Goodyear's Bar, south and southeast through Forest, Alleghany, Chip's Flat, and Minnesota. This gold-bearing belt continues south to the Washington district in Nevada County. The Downieville and American Hill districts are to the east, and the Pike district is to the west. History . The streams in the area were placer-mined soon after the beginning of the gold rush, and the Forest diggings were discovered in the summer of 1852 by some sailors. Some of these sailors were "Kanakas" or Hawaiians who also had deserted their ships in San Francisco. Forest, first known as Brownsville and then Elizaville, got its present name in 1853. The Bald Mountain and other drift mines were highly productive from then until around 1885. Hydraulic mining was done at Minnesota and Chip's Flat during these years. The town of Alleghany was named for Alleghany, Pennsylvania. Quartz mining was reported to have begun in the district in 1853 at the German Bar and Irelan mines. Although the quartz mines were moderately productive until the 1870s, drift mining was the principal source of gold then. The rediscovery of the Tightner vein in 1904 by H. F. Johnson (erroneously given as 1907 in many reports) led to the revival of lode mining, which continued until 1965.

(USGS Bulletin 2125, Gold Placers of the Historical Fortymile River Region , Alaska, 1996) High terrace gravels record a time from the late Tertiary to the late Pleistocene when the river had flood plains from 1 to 2 miles wide and had shallow gradients. The river subsequently incised into these auriferous flood plains and developed the youthful characteristics that it has today. The placer gold from these ancient benches reconcentrated in the present river valley. The Fortymile River drains an area of approximately 15,000 km

Otago Gold: Origins of the gold
Gold occurs in two distinct geological settings in Otago: within quartz veins in the schist (hard-rock gold), and as detrital gold grains in gravels (alluvial gold). The quartz veins which contain the hard-rock gold were formed by hot water (200-400°C) passing through fractures in the schist up to 15 kilometres below surface. The passing hot water deposited the quartz and gold as it rose and cooled through the schist bedrock. Hard-rock gold forms the original source for the alluvial gold, but many alluvial deposits have been derived by erosion of older gravel deposits. Gold is 19 times denser than water, and does not move far in streams unless it is as small particles (less than half millimetre). Quartz veins (white) fill fractures in schist (grey and platy), Shotover valley. Brown iron oxide (rust) near the quartz veins indicate iron minerals (pyrite, FeS and siderite, FeCO

"The country is wild, rough and full of hardships for those unused to the rigors of Arctic winters. If a man makes a fortune he is liable to earn it by severe hardship and sufferings. But, then, grit, perseverance and luck will probably reward a hard worker with a comfortable income for life."

Clarence Berry , one of the miners returning on the Portland, quoted in The Seattle Post-lntelligencer, July 17,1897. With cries of "Gold! Gold in the Klondike!" there unfolded in the Yukon and Alaska an incredible historic adventure, whose theme of human endeavor in the face of adversity captured the imagination of people around the world. In August 1896 when George Washington Carmack and his two Indian companions, Skookum Jim and Tagish Charlie , found gold in a tributary of the Klondike River in Canada's Yukon Territory, they had no idea that they would set off one of the greatest gold rushes in history. True, most of the good claims were already staked by the time the rush really got underway in the summer of 1897; but this didn't stop an army of hopeful goldseekers from boarding ships at Seattle and other Pacific port cities and heading north to try their luck. Throughout the summer and autumn of 1897 and on into the winter, stampeders poured into the newly created Alaskan tent and shack towns of

"In 1972 K. Duguid produced a detailed structural study of the Commoner Mine below the eighth level."
A gist of it follows :-

Photomicrograph at X 10 magnification of polished block of Commoner gold reef showing the close association of gold with carbonaceous (black) matter in the reef quartz (reddish background). "The carbon adsorbed the gold from epithermal solutions… only to 'throw' it out partially as free milling gold during the later deformation."

Previously, the trend crossed several mineral property boundaries and was explored piecemeal. Now, for the first time, Castillian has assembled almost all of the properties along the trend so that it can be explored efficiently Gold has been produced from old workings at several locations along the trend. The most notable was the Doratha Morton Mine where the 1898-1899 production yielded 137,900 gm (4,434 oz) gold and 317,904 gm (10,222 oz) of silver from 8,806 tonnes (9,707 tons) of mineralization.
