The Topic:
Global Warming Easier - The surface of the earth has been warming, the average temperature increasing, for several years. People studying this do not agree on the cause of the warming trend. Some say that man has caused the change; others claim that it is a natural trend. Harder - For several years believers and skeptics have argued about the causes of global warming. The problem is complicated because believers warn that man-made causes if left to advance too far may be irreversible. Reduction of the rainforests, continued growth in hydrocarbon industries, increases in livestock, and depletion of the ozone are all considered factors in the debate. Skeptics maintain that the climate change is a natural phenomenon, that man's effect on nature is largely overrated. The fact is that for several years, the earth's temperature is rising. The problem remains in deciding what if anything we can do about it.

Much media attention is focusing on the forthcoming big-budget climate disaster movie "The Day After Tomorrow" and how much scrutiny the "science" on which it is based deserves. But there are some developments in the world of serious climate science that certainly deserve greater scrutiny. A new paper appearing today in the journal Nature purports to solve the long standing "problem" of the satellite-based global temperature record not showing much warming over the last 25 years (only +0.085 deg C/decade about a third of what is expected from climate models for the troposphere). Instead, all it does is help answer the question: "is the quality of peer review in the popular science journals getting worse?" (The answer is "yes.") By way of background, the Microwave Sounding Units (MSU) on the NOAA polar orbiting satellites measure deep layers of the atmosphere, with each instrument channel measuring the average temperature of a different layer (see Fig. 1).

Studies: Global warming to worsen
LONDON, England (CNN) Two new climate studies predict that global warming by the end of the century will be even more dramatic than a United Nations group has predicted. But more important than that long-range outlook, said one climate expert, is the data that both teams of scientists show for the years 2020-2030. "These very different approaches both tell us that two to three decades from now, it will be warmer than it is now," said Francis Zwiers, a statistics and climate expert with the Meteorological Service of Canada. A British study says that in those years the Earth will be 0.5 to 2.3 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the period between 1990-2000. A Swiss study predicts a temperature increase ranging from 0.9 to 1.9 degrees Fahrenheit. "In that time scale, we can do planning for changing fuel sources, so there are less greenhouse gases," Zwiers said.

Common Misconceptions about Abrupt Climate Change

Several decades of scientific research have yielded significant advances in understanding the ocean's role in regulating Earth's climate. This summary covers some of the major points about abrupt climate change that are often misunderstood.

A new study strengthens evidence that the oceans and climate are linked in an intricate dance, and that rapid climate change may be related to how vigorously ocean currents transport heat from low to high latitudes. Salt Levels Changing in the Oceans

Scientists and entrepreneurs alike see opportunity in the results of a mid-1990s experiment in which Moss Landing Marine Laboratories spread relatively small amounts of iron sulfate across a 100-square-mile patch of ocean. MESSAGE BOARD Environmental issues "By day four, five, the oceans had turned green," said Kenneth Coale, oceanographer and acting director of Moss Landing Marine Laboratory. Fire's role in global warming studied
September 27, 1999
Web posted at: 4:49 p.m. EDT (2049 GMT) This low intensity fire will burn only the grassy fuels and the fine woody litter producing little inert charcoal. A hot fire is more likely to kill trees and generate a large amount of charcoal, adding more to the greenhouse effect. Scientists from 12 countries are monitoring the contribution fires make to greenhouse gas emissions as well as the impact fires have when they destroy trees that soak up carbon dioxide. The project, named The World Fire Web, is using satellite images to map and monitor the extent of fires across two-thirds of the Earth. Each participating country is responsible for monitoring a particular area and the results will be shared over the Internet to produce daily global fire maps.

Introduced are some of the effects of climate change. In addition, this section attempts to provide insights into what governments, companies, international institutions, and other organizations are attempting to do about this issue, as well as the challenges they face. Some of the major conferences in recent years are also discussed.
      Introduction
With global warming on the increase and species and their habitats on the decrease, chances for ecosystems to adapt naturally are diminishing. Recent years show increasing temperatures in various regions, and/or increasing extremities in weather patterns. Something of contention still, in the United States, is whether or not climate change is real, and, if it has been induced or accelerated by human activities or not (and given that the U.S. emits about 25% of the world's carbon emissions, it is a big ramification for them). Many reports from various scientists show that climate change is here, and furthermore that human activity has contributed to it.

Unit Description Many people are concerned about the possibility that the earth is getting warmer and the effects this change might have on the earth's ecosystem. This unit includes classroom activities to help students understand global warming and its possible effects on human beings. Lessons in the unit provide students with opportunities to study global climate changes, discuss and debate the current arguments for and against global warming and the Greenhouse Effect, investigate the possibility of global warming and the Greenhouse Effect, and present their findings in the form of research reports.
    Objectives Students will:
    • Learn about changes in global weather patterns and climate over long periods of time.
    • Study and debate the possibility of a Greenhouse Effect and its impact on the earth.
    • Use the Greenhouse Effect Visualizer to understand possible greenhouse effect changes.

    THE EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING
"Global warming will be the greatest environmental challenge in the 21st century."
    - Vice President, Albert Gore. One of the most current and widely discussed factor which could lead to the ultimate end of existence of Earth and man is global warming and its devastating effects. Scientists have asked how fast the Earth is heating up, and how the warming effects on Earth may effect crops and climatic conditions. Several current trends clearly demonstrate that global warming is directly impacting on; rising sea levels, the melting of icecaps, and significant worldwide climatic changes. This paper will discuss the degree of destruction caused by global warming, contributing factors to warming, and finally, discuss what we can do to decrease the current rate of global warming. I would also like to present opposing viewpoints to the effects of the warming process. In my understanding, global warming represents a fundamental threat to all living things on earth. I want to say a special word about Joan Blades, who traveled from California for this event and who, along with her husband, Wes Boyd, co-founded Moveon.org. She has been from the beginning a moving force behind the emergence of this dynamic new grassroots movement in American politics and public policy. I have made a series of speeches about the policies of the Bush / Cheney Administration towards the major challenges that confront our nation: national security, economic policy, civil liberties, and today: the environment. In essence, these scientists are telling the people of every nation that global warming caused by human activities is becoming a serious threat to our common future. I am also troubled that the Bush/Cheney Administration does not seem to hear the warnings of the scientific community in the same way that most of us do. Here is what we are talking about: PICTURES 1 THROUGH 8
PICTURES 9 THROUGH 12 PICTURES 13 THROUGH 65 So the evidence is overwhelming and undeniable.
