Global Warming is an interactive online lesson that will educate students about this highly debated environmental issue. Students will be given the chance to research global warming with global warming web sites linked to our lesson. Then students can put their knowledge to the test with either a classroom debate on global warming, or a written essay about the effects. Grade Level: The Global Warming lesson is designed for grades 9 through 12.
It is designed to take 30 minutes to read through. Research using the lesson could take several hours. Overview: The Global Warming lesson is designed to give students a working definition of global warming and some of the reasons why there are two divided sides that debate about it. The bulk of information about global warming is left for the students to discover. The lesson explains the arguments of both sides and gives suggestions on topics to research and find out more. To help the students, we have provided links to web sites from both sides of the global warming debate. Those pages have links from them to other global warming pages, and so on. There is a wealth of information about global warming on the Internet, and with a little work, students can find what they need. By making the students research global warming instead of just reading it from the lesson, students learn research skills, and are free to make up their own minds about global warming. The motivation for students to do the research is their assignment.

Bush to unveil global warming plan
WASHINGTON (CNN) Facing mounting criticism over his failure to confront the problem of global warming, President Bush is set to announce two global warming research initiatives. The multi-million dollar programs would be dedicated to researching the causes of global warming and developing technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, a senior administration official told CNN. Bush is scheduled to make the announcements during a Rose Garden ceremony Monday morning, just hours before departing for his first presidential trip to Europe where global warming is one of a handful of issues expected to dominate the agenda. Aides did not reveal the total dollar amount for the new programs, but said up to $25 million would be used to build climate observation systems in developing countries. Global Warming
Nuclear Issues Briefing Paper 24 January 2003
  • The greenhouse effect occurs naturally, providing a habitable climate.
  • Some of the gases that produce the greenhouse effect are increasing due to human activity and this is most the worlds scientists believe causes global warming.
  • One-third of human-induced greenhouse gases come from the burning of fossil fuel to generate electricity. Nuclear power plants do not emit these gases and are the single most significant means of limiting the increased greenhouse gas concentrations while enabling access to abundant electricity.
The "greenhouse effect" is the term used to describe the retention of heat in the earth's lower atmosphere (troposphere). In colloquial usage it often refers to the enhanced global warming which is considered likely to occur because of the increasing concentrations of certain trace gases in the atmosphere. These gases are generally known as greenhouse gases, or more specifically as radiative gases. Concentrations of them have increased significantly during this century, and a large part of this increase is attributed to human sources, i.e. it is anthropogenic. Furthermore, although most sources of anthropogenic emissions can be identified in particular countries, their effect is in no way confined to those countries, - it is global.

Global Warming
What's the greenhouse effect? Earth's greenhouse effect is a natural phenomenon that helps regulate the temperature of our planet. Simply put, the sun heats the Earth and some of this heat, rather than escaping back to space, is trapped in the atmosphere by clouds and greenhouse gases, such as water vapor and carbon dioxide. If all of these greenhouse gases were to suddenly disappear, our planet would be 60°F colder and uninhabitable.
Is our planet warming? The global temperature record shows an average warming of about 1.1°F over the past century . This warming has been recorded in both the northern and southern hemispheres, and over the oceans, with some areas substantially warmer and others actually cooler. The ten warmest years have occurred since 1983, with seven of them since 1990. Recent evidence shows the 20th century was the warmest in the last 1,000 years. The 1990s were the warmest decade and 1998 was the single warmest year of the past millennium. Are human activities responsible for the warming?

Exemptions Threaten Military Families' Health Under the guise of war and excuse of military readiness, the Bush Administration announced yesterday it intends to exempt the Department of Defense (one of the nation’s largest polluters) from the Clean Air Act (CAA), Toxic Waste law (RCRA) and Superfund (CERCLA). These exemptions would endanger the public health and welfare of military families and surrounding communities, endanger the drinking water supply of many in this nation, and undermine the legal ability of states and citizens to protect themselves from these threats.

Please consider these materials carefully. The United States is very close to adopting an international agreement that would ration the use of energy and of technologies that depend upon coal, oil, and natural gas and some other organic compounds. This treaty is, in our opinion, based upon flawed ideas. Research data on climate change do not show that human use of hydrocarbons is harmful. To the contrary, there is good evidence that increased atmospheric carbon dioxide is environmentally helpful. The proposed agreement would have very negative effects upon the technology of nations throughout the world, especially those that are currently attempting to lift from poverty and provide opportunities to the over 4 billion people in technologically underdeveloped countries.
