Global warming
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Global warming is an increase over time of the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans . It is generally used to describe the temperature rise over the past century or so, and the effects of humans on the temperature. The term may be used to describe theories explaining such an increase or the crisis that many say will arise if no one does anything to prevent such an increase from occurring. Use of the term "global warming" usually implies a human influence. The more neutral term climate change is usually used to describe previous natural variations. However, the UNFCCC defines "climate change" as anthropogenic Since 1990, the prospect that the earth's surface might become dangerously overheated because of heat trapped by carbon dioxide and other " greenhouse gases " has been a hotly debated topic. Site Info THANKS FOR VISITING Maximize for best viewing Nearly my entire site which consisted of over 230 pages was deleted (on April 14) as a result of my own absent minded mistake. At the moment I am working on remaking every page. I am sorry if this has caused any problems. I did not reach my goal for the entire site to be up by May 1. Many of the endangered species pages are up, however and I have added a lot of information on air pollution- much more than I previously had. Most of the main pages are also up! As of June 14, I have begun to redesign this site. I am working on eliminating the inconvenience of the frames. Sign the guestbook if you get a chance! SYDNEY, Australia (Reuters) Australian scientists have found the Earth may be more resilient to global warming than first thought, and they say a warmer world means a wetter planet, encouraging more plants to grow and soak up greenhouse gases. "The global water cycle has changed in response to greenhouse emissions," almost 100 Australian greenhouse scientists said in an annual statement on their research received on Wednesday. "As the world warms it is, on average, getting wetter," said the scientists, who met recently under the banner of Australia's Cooperative Research Center for Greenhouse Accounting. According to its Web site, the group's corporate sponsors are Alcoa Alumina Australia, the petroleum giant Royal Dutch/Shell, and Stanwell Corporation Limited, an energy company owned by the state of Queensland. A wetter and cloudier world would see more plants and more photosynthesis to counter greenhouse gases and also mean less evaporation as less solar radiation reaches the Earth.

Welcome to MarClim.
MarClim is a new major four-year multi-partner British and Irish project led by the Marine Biological Association in collaboration with Plymouth Marine Laboratory, The Scottish Association for Marine Science, The University of Plymouth and University College Cork. The aim of MarClim is to assess and forecast the influence of climatic change on marine biodiversity in Britain and Ireland using long term and current data on intertidal rocky shore indicator species. MarClim is currently the only government-funded project addressing climate change in the marine environment in the UK. Our pages detail the activities of our project and provide general information on climate change issues. Click here to explore the MarClim Web site You are visitor number since January 26th 2003

THE POWER FOR THE PEOPLE Aids Air Traffic Alaska Alaska Pipeline ... Wind Power Global Warming The 'Greenhouse Effect' The greenhouse effect is a natural occurrence that maintains Earth's average temperature at approximately 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Under normal conditions some of the sun's heat is radiated back into space The 'Greenhouse Effect' occurs when heat is trapped in the atmosphere by gases BBC Graphic The greenhouse effect is a necessary phenomenon that keeps all Earth's heat from escaping to the outer atmosphere. Without the natural greenhouse effect it is certain that we would all be lost. Temperatures on Earth would be much lower than they are now, and the existence of life on this planet would not be possible. The global average temperature would drop precipitously 33 degrees from its current 15° to -18°C. The Earth would become an ice planet. However, too many greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere could increase the greenhouse effect. This could result in an increase in mean global temperatures as well as changes in precipitation patterns. The Earth's atmosphere, a thin blanket of gases, protects the planet from the harshest of the sun's ultraviolet radiation. The atmosphere, by trapping the Earth's warmth, keeps rivers and oceans from freezing. Carbon dioxide and water vapor are the most important gases in creating the insulating or "greenhouse effect" of the atmosphere.

    Global Warming
    Does it Exist?
If so, is it Man- or Sun-made?
Graph of solar activity versus climate
From Friis-Christensen, E., and K. Lassen, "Length of the solar cycle: An indicator of solar activity closely associated with climate," Science, 254, 698-700, 1991. Global warming the gradual increase in planet-wide temperatures seems to be accepted by many scientists and people now as fact. Generally, this warming is attributed to the increase of green-house gases in the Earth's upper atmosphere. However, some solar scientists are considering whether the warming exists at all. And, if it does, might it be caused, wholely or in part, by a periodic but small increase in the Sun's energy output. An increase of just 0.2% in the solar output could have the same affect as doubling the carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere.
    What is the Problem?
What is the evidence for global warming? Certainly, there are considerably more green-house gases (e.g. carbon dioxide) in our atmosphere than in previous times. And there appears to be some evidence that global temperatures are rising. But, how accurate and correct are our global warming statistics? And, do we really know what role, if any, the Sun might play in any global warming patterns? These issues are currently being debated, and may significantly affect you for the rest of your life. Would you like to do some research to find out more about global warming?

    Global warming unpredictable, scientists say
This animation shows the ozone hole over Antarctica from Aug. 1-Nov. 30, 1997. The dark purple represents a thin layer of ozone, dark red represents a thick layer of ozone.
Climate scientists are changing their theory about greenhouse gas emissions and global warming and have come up with more pessimistic — and even optimistic — outlooks, according to the Sept. 16 issue of New Scientist. Emissions in the year 2100 could be five times as high as today's, which is double the amount previously predicted. Or, emissions could be lower, the scientists say. The unknown factor that allows predictions to be good and bad is how technology to reduce emissions will be developed. The warning was issued in a draft special report on emissions from the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change due out in March of 2000. The draft reflects the consensus view of hundreds of scientists and economists.

    The Carbon Cycle
The concentration of carbon in living matter (18%) is almost 100 times greater than its concentration in the earth (0.19%). So living things extract carbon from their nonliving environment. For life to continue, this carbon must be recycled. That is our topic.
Carbon exists in the nonliving environment as:
    • carbon dioxide (CO ) in the atmosphere and dissolved in water (forming HCO
    • carbonate rocks (limestone and coral = CaCO
    • deposits of coal, petroleum, and natural gas derived from once-living things
    • dead organic matter, e.g., humus in the soil
Carbon enters the biotic world through the action of autotrophs:
    • primarily photoautotrophs , like plants and algae, that use the energy of light to convert carbon dioxide to organic matter. Links to photosynthesis
    • and to a small extent, chemoautotrophs - bacteria and archaeans that do the same but use the energy derived from an oxidation of molecules in their substrate.
Carbon returns to the atmosphere and water by
    • respiration (as CO
    • burning
    • decay (producing CO if oxygen is present, methane (CH
