Appropriate conservation and sustainable development strategies attempt to recognize this as being integral to any approach. News Archives T he Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) is dedicated to increasing knowledge of the biological and physical processes that sustain life on earth. SERC's interdisciplinary research applies long-term studies to examine the ecological questions about landscapes of linked ecosystems, especially those impacted by human activities. SERC scientists use an experimental approach to discover mechanisms regulating the structure and dynamics of the environment. L ocated on the shore of Chesapeake Bay, SERC uses the geographic features of the nation's largest estuary to investigate interconnections of aquatic, terrestrial and atmospheric components of complex landscapes. These studies are then compared on regional, continental and global scales. SERC develops innovative approaches and instrumentation to measure environmental change in four ecological levels: global change; landscape ecology; ecology of coastal ecosystems; and population and community ecology. Activity 3.3 and other Soils Components Introduction and Rationale S oil erosion is a very widespread phenomenon, and is usually irreversible. Once the nutrient-rich surface soil has been lost, the ability to sustain plant growth is severely reduced, and increased runoff from the more impermeable subsoil results in a decrease in plant-available water. Furthermore, erosion brings various associated "off-site" problems, including reduced water quality from increased sediment loads and poorer air quality due to dust. T he severity, frequency and extent of erosion will be altered by changes in rainfall amount and intensity, and by changes in wind. Global change will thus amplify many current problems of soil erosion, and as certain soil thresholds are exceeded, potentially new and different problems could arise. It is therefore crucial to understand the potential impacts of global change on soils to allow the developments in predictive capability necessary to improve their management in the future. The GCTE Soil Erosion Network is dedicated to this goal, and forms a key component of GCTEs' soil research. Objectives To design and undertake experimental and monitoring programmes to provide a predictive understanding of the impacts of changes in climate and land-use on soil erosion.

In the early 1980's, we became Watertown's nuclear freeze group, and we have continued to work on projects that promote environmental safety and sound environmental practices in Watertown, and to support projects which the group judges to promote social justice, world peace, and global security. Over the years, our members have been particularly active, and known in the community, for our participation in the reuse planning and environmental restoration of the Watertown Arsenal, and for our annual commemoration of the bombing of Hiroshima. Several other local groups including The Recycling Committee, The El Tremedal Sister City Group, and Trees for Watertown began as projects of WCES. We are a member of the Massachusetts Climate Action Network (MCAN) and Boston-area United with Justice for Peace, and we often support projects of Mass Peace Action, MassPIRG and the Toxics Action Center.
