Simulated global environmental changes impact plant diversity
The Carnegie and Stanford scientists conducted their three-year study in the Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve - a typical California grassland where the 43 plant species are a mixture of grasses and wildflowers. "We simulated a series of possible future environments for California, with four global change factors: elevated CO2, warming, nitrogen pollution, and added precipitation, alone and in combinations. Different combinations with altered levels of two, three, and four of these variables are likely to reflect future conditions in different parts of the globe," said Chris Field, director of the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology and coordinator of the Jasper Ridge study. "At the end of three years, we found that treatments with three of the four experimental treatments changed total plant diversity. Elevated CO2 reduced diversity as did adding nitrogen. More water increased plant diversity and, warming alone had no effect," Zavaleta explained. The four treatment combinations that represent likely possible futures all resulted in decreased wildflower diversity; but total diversity was not affected because there was an increase in the grasses. The largest loss of wildflower diversity came with elevated CO2 plus warming and nitrogen pollution, and all four of the factors combined. "Given the importance of the wildflower species for wildlife, nutrient cycling, and natural beauty, the losses under realistic global changes are a cause for concern," said Zavaleta.

Course Description: Humankind had so fundamentally altered the biosphere that for all purposes much of it had been genuinely transformed or is nearing that condition.  The purposes of this course it to understand the processes of transformation to our environment and human populations that have taken place over the past 300 years, to explore the major human forces that have driven these changes, to examine the global and regional patterns of transformation, and to explore how these transformations affect our relationship with nature and human life.  More specifically, we will examine in this course
a. population changes and societal perspectives which include discussions on changes in demographic trends, societal perception of change, impact of change in human societies, and the awareness of human impacts;
b. transformations of the global environment including the land (forests, soils etc.), water, biota, atmosphere and climate;

Aim of the programme
There has never been greater concern about the future of the global environment than there is today. Understanding scientific theory and anticipating threats is essential for the successful reconciliation of sustainable economic development and nature conservation on a global scale.
Duration
Mres: 1 year full time/PgDip: 9 months full time
General programme structure
Considerable scientific uncertainty exists in any predictions about the future; the Earth's natural systems are not, and never have been, free from change. Natural variability is an intrinsic factor in all ecosystems and can be better understood by studying the Earth's environmental history. We can make informed management decisions about the future of the global environment only by understanding the scientific aspects of this subject area.
The Global Change programme is designed to fulfil the need for such understanding, providing the scientific knowledge, information and skills to enable you to identify and manage key global issues of the future. These skills are particularly relevant for those seeking to pursue a career in environmental consultancies, government agencies or in academia. You will benefit from the interdisciplinary nature of the course; modules in data collection and analysis, research and project design are combined with the scientific basis of various changing environmental syst

Closure of the UK GER Office - 31 March 1998
The Global Environmental Research Office was established in 1990 in recognition of the growing national and international interest in GER issues and the need to coordinate UK responses to research opportunities and challenges across Research Council disciplinary boundaries. From the start it was recognised that as new communities and networks became established, the requirement for central coordination would alter in its nature. The Heads of Research Councils (HORC's) decided that the Office should close on 31 March 1998. However, they recognised that as GER has expanded to address impacts and solutions as well as detection and understanding of change, there would still be an ongoing need to coordinate global change activities across Research Councils within existing mechanisms. A cross-Council working group has been established to consider this and to put proposals to HORC's in April 1998. Only the following publications and information are still accessible from this Website:

Inter-Agency Committee on Global Environmental Change (IACGEC)
A review of the UK Inter-Agency Committee on Global Environmental Change (IACGEC), which was carried out by the UK Government's Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Robert May, concluded that the IACGEC had been an effective mechanism in the past and that it should continue to provide UK agencies funding Global Environmental Change (GEC) research with a senior-level forum for discussion of relevant science and policy developments. Details of the outcome of the review were announced in March 1997. Professor Sir Richard Southwood, past Vice Chancellor and current Pro-Vice Chancellor and Professor of Zoology at Oxford University, and a Director of Glaxo Wellcome, is the current Chairman of the IACGEC. A broader membership structure has been introduced and the public bodies which are now members of the IACGEC are:
  • Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)
  • British National Space Centre (BNSC)
  • Department of the Environment (DoE)
  • Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)
  • Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)
  • Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
  • Medical Research Council (MRC)

Vulnerability and global environmental change by Coleen Vogel
Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. University of the Witwatersrand. Johannesburg. South Africa
This paper is adapted from an earlier paper presented at the Regional Workshop on Risk Reduction in southern Africa, Disaster Mitigation for Sustainable Livelihoods Project, SADEP, University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, October, 1997.
Human-induced changes in atmospheric composition, climate and land use broadly constitute global environmental change. One of the components of global environmental change is human dimensions including human-induced alteration of the biophysical systems and the consequent effect on human welfare (Parry, 1996). Vulnerability, a term often loosely bandied about in both the development literature and relief field, is a fundamental aspect of global environmental change. While the term vulnerability is used in a number of contexts (e.g. medical science and biophysical sciences) it is increasingly being viewed through the lens of the social sciences (Chambers, 1989; Liverman, 1990, 1992; Dow, 1992; Watts and Bohle, 1993; Blaikie et al ., 1994; Kasperson
