Owner Help Desk,eoPortal,The Organisation SCAR Standing Scientific Group for Physical Sciences (SCAR SSG) Abstract Over the past decades, Antarctic glaciology has become, more and more a field of study of general interest. This has resulted from the profound concern for the past, the present and the future of the Earth environment. Major problems are still open in Antarctic glaciology that require intensified and co-ordinated research, such as evaluation of the ice sheet mass balance, ice sheet dynamics, and understanding ice-ocean-atmosphere interactions in a changing climate. Unique information can be extracted from ice, sub-glacial lakes and permafrost, concerning past atmosphere and climate, environmental changes and life adaptation.
The Seventh International Symposium on Antarctic Glaciology will take place from 25 to 29 August 2003 at the University of Milano-Bicocca, Italy. The symposium is organised by the SCAR Standing Scientific Group for Physical Sciences with local arrangements by committee from the Italian Antarctic Research Program.

Introduction The glaciology group mostly carries out research at the greenland ice sheet margin. In this area studies of energy balance, of ice dynamics, of surface properties by means of remote sensing is studied. This is in order to provide knowldege about the ice sheets sensitivity to climate change and to sea level.
Research Programme, Imersuaq The project aims at a more precise estimate of the contribution from the icesheet to hydropower potentials, based on the largest bassin in Western Greenland 'Tasersiaq', situated between the cities of Maniitsoq and Kangerlussuaq Edited by:

The year 2001 was bracketed by two volumes dealing with the climate record contained in ice cores: The Two Mile Time Machine (2000) by Richard Alley and The Ice Chronicles (2002) by Paul Mayewski and Frank White. These serve as bookends for the first International Symposium on Ice Cores and Climate to be held in Greenland. The symposium took place in Kangerlussuaq last August and was co-sponsored by the International Glaciological Society, the Danish Natural Science Foundation, and the University of Copenhagen. Topics included the interpretation of ice-core records, comparison of results from different ice cores, meteorology of air-snow transfer to improve ice-core interpretation, comparison of ice-core records with other climate records, mass balance studies, results from the Program for Arctic Regional Climate Assessment (PARCA), geophysical and borehole measurements, and ice-flow rheology that influences ice-core interpretation.
The northern section of the Larsen B ice shelf, an ice mass on the eastern side of the Antarctic Peninsula, collapsed earlier this year. These satellite images compiled from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS), and analyzed at the University of Colorado's National Snow and Ice Data Center, show that between Jan. 31 (left) and March 5 (right), the ice shelf lost about 1,255 square miles of area. Glaciology is the study of water in its frozen state (lat: glacies=ice). This includes the physical, spatial, and temporal relationships between the ice and the environment, such as energy- and mass exchanges, phase shifting, mechanical and dynamical properties, and variations in occurrence and extent.
Ice sheets and glaciers can be thought of as sensitive barometers wich respond to short time fluctuations in the climate. Therefore, glaciology can contribute to the on-going debate on global warming as a consequence of an increased green-house effect. By measuring glaciers' growth and melt and changes in geometry and motion, it is possible to draw conclusions about the ice mass balance. The mass balance tells us whether the ice is adjusting to new environmental conditions, for example, an increased air temperature. We are also dependent on past time climate in order to interpret trends at present. Since glacier ice constitutes layers of snow accumulated over the years, we find the oldest ice in the bottom of the glacier. Ice cores that are brought up from these depths display a historical record of past times atmospheric composition. In these ice cores, we can see natural cycles as well as events induced by us, the humans, for example, test bombing of nuclear devices.

Kommission für Glaziologie
(Commission for Glaciology)
The Commission was established in 1962 in order to investigate the link between climate and the behaviour of glaciers. This interdisciplinary endeavour applies methods taken from meteorology, climatology, geodesy, cartography and hydrology. Research is focused on the Vernagtferner in the Ötztal Alps, Austria, where the annual glacier mass balance is determined along with the climatological conditions and discharge. Parallel to this long-term monitoring, which includes frequent geodetic surveys, the Commission is engaged in concentrated process studies to determine the energy balance over snow and ice as well as runoff formation in high alpine regions under the current conditions of drastic glacier retreat. This research project is supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) and other research institutions; the results are primarily of interest in water resource management.
Apart from research on alpine glaciers, the Commission undertakes comparative studies in the Nepalese Himalayas and Central Asia. These include the re-mapping of selected glaciers, which makes it possible to determine long-term changes in glaciation in those areas for which earlier expeditions have produced exact historical maps. Glaciological research also continues in the Antarctic, in cooperation with the GSF Institut für Hydrologie (Institute for Hydrology), Munich, and the Alfred-Wegener-Institut für Polar- und Meeresforschung (Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research), Bremerhaven.

For the second circular and further information, please go to:

or to: http://www.igsoc.org/symposia/2004/geilo/ BACKGROUND Approximately two-thirds of the Earth's small glaciers and ice caps are located in the Arctic, in addition to the 1.7 million km2 Greenland Ice Sheet. The enhanced climate warming predicted for the Arctic is likely to have important consequences for the mass-balance and dynamics of Arctic ice masses; accelerating melting has been observed in some parts of the Arctic already, providing a significant contribution to observed global sea-level rise. Cores from Arctic ice masses are also a key source of high-resolution palaeoclimatic information. Understanding the flow-behavior of these ice masses is also important both to modelling future cryospheric responses to climate change and to interpreting ice-core records. The understanding of the past, present, and likely future responses of Arctic ice masses to climate change is the key aim of this conference. Approaches using and integrating field observations, remote sensing, and modelling are welcomed.
