A
ablation
In glaciers, refers to melting, erosion and evaporation which reduces the area of the ice.
ablation area or zone
The region of a glacier where more mass is lost by melting or evaporation than is gained.
accretion
Snow accretion is the growth of precipitation particles by collision of ice crystals with supercooled liquid droplets which freeze on impact.
accretion-gley(see gley)
accumulation area or zone
Where snow falls on a glacier, commonly on a snowfield or cirque.
albedo
The percent reflectivity of a surface. Ice may reflect up to 90 percent of incoming solar radiation (albedo = 90), while blacktop asphalt may absorb up to 95 percent (albedo = 5).
alluvium
Sediment eroded from adjacent areas and deposited by running water in and along rivers and streams.

27. Description Of Glaciology
What is glaciology ? glaciology is the study of ice in the environment. Important components are seasonal snow, sea ice, glaciers
http://www.geophys.washington.edu/Surface/Glaciology/glac_what.html
What is Glaciology ?
Glaciology is the study of ice in the environment. Important components are seasonal snow sea ice glaciers ice sheets and frozen ground . The extent of these types of ice reflects the present and past climate. Examples are: hemispheric snow cover in winter, thickness of sea ice on the polar oceans, depth of frozen ground, volumes of glaciers and the physical and chemical properties in layers cored from ice sheets. The ice also affects climate. For example, the large areas covered by snow and sea ice reflect solar radiation away from the Earth's surface and thereby influence the heat balance of the earth. Because these ice components are only decimeters to meters thick, they can change on time scales as short as seasons and can influence climate at all time scales. Glaciers and ice sheets are hundreds to more than one thousand meters thick and change significantly only on decadal or much longer time scale. On these longer time scales they can influence atmospheric circulation and global sea level. More locally all of these types of ice influence hydrology, geomorphic processes and pose various natural hazards.

Glaciology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Glaciology is the study of glaciers , or more generally the study of ice and natural phenomena that involve ice. It is an interdisciplinary earth science that integrates geology climatology meteorology hydrology ... biology , and ecology . The presence of ice on Mars and Europa brings in an extraterrestrial component to the field. Areas of study within glaciology include glacial history and the reconstruction of past glaciation patterns, effects of glaciers on climate and vice versa, the dynamics of ice movement, the contributions of glaciers to erosion, lifeforms that live in the ice, and so forth. Unsurprisingly, glaciology is one of the key areas supported by polar research. There are two general categories of glaciation which glaciologists distinguish: alpine glaciation , accumulations or "rivers of ice" confined to valleys; and continental glaciation , unrestricted accumulations which once covered much of the northern continents.

Common Questions and Myths about Glaciers
Questions: 1. Why are there glaciers? Glaciers form where more snow falls than melts over a period of years, compacts into ice, and becomes thick enough to begin to move. That is, a snow patch becomes a glacier when the deepest layers begin to deform due to the weight of the overlying snow and ice. 2. Why are glaciers blue?
