Kelvin's Cave
, located on southern Idaho's Snake River Plain. For the past four years, the field school has been conducting research at the Connley Caves and the Paisley Caves in central Oregon under the direction of Dr. Dennis L. Jenkins. Excavations at the Connley Caves, located in the Fort Rock Valley, produced bison bone in association with early Holocene stone artifacts. Pleistocene camel, horse, bison, fish and waterfowl bones in apparent association with well preserved perishable human artifacts were recovered from the Paisley Caves. Like the Paisley Caves, Kelvin's Cave has produced intriguing evidence that early aboriginal peoples may have successfully hunted now extinct camel and muskox in the region over 10,000 years ago. The cave was originally tested in 1988 by staff from the Herrett Museum, however, work halted before definitive evidence could be gathered regarding the direct association of stone tools with extinct megafauna. Dr. L. Suzann Henrikson , who has conducted archaeological research in southern Idaho for the past 15 years, will supervise the 2004 excavations at Kelvin's Cave. If a late Pleistocene association between humans and extinct megafauna can be demonstrated, the locality will represent one of the oldest archaeological sites known to exist in the western United States and will greatly expand our knowledge of early human occupation of North America. Cades Cove Geologic Mapping Project Welcome to the Eastern Earth Surface Processes Team web page for the Cades Cove geologic mapping project. This project is part of the National Park Service USGS Cooperative Project, Geology of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). Cades Cove is a beautiful valley in the western part of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is perhaps the most popular area of the park, receiving over 2.5 million visitors a year. Most visitors come to catch a glimpse of wildlife which thrive in and around the nearly 5,000 acres of open meadows. The great beauty of Cades Cove can be more fully appreciated when the diverse geologic history is revealed. This is the geologic story of Cades Cove, just one of the many destinations of geologic interest within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Whether driving the 11-mile long Loop Road or hiking to Abrams Falls or Gregory Bald , this overview will provide insight to the geologic history and evolution of the spectacular scenery.

Photo © 1999 Ray Wheeler In the very heart of the Colorado Plateau lies Canyonlands National Park, a fantastic tableau of bizarre rock formations and colorful slickrock mesas. The park encompasses a rugged landscape dominated by barren rock, with sparse desert plant communities growing on less hostile sites. Due to the great variation in elevation within the park, species diversity is high; however, with little soil and low annual precipitation rates of 4-10 inches/year, population densities of many species of both plants and animals are relatively low. Saltbush, Indian rice grass and blackbrush are some of the 536 plant species that are adapted to the arid environment of Canyonlands. Among the many animals that make Canyonlands their permanent or seasonal home are mule deer, coyote, bighorn sheep and 25 species of rodents, including woodrats and deer mice. Seventy percent of the living cover in the park is delicate cryptobiotic soil , growing in peaks and valleys over the sand.
