Geology Farewell Celebration
The End of a Geological Era!
There will be a party from 5pm on Saturday 26 June 2004 to mark the end of Geology at Oxford Polytechnic/Oxford Brookes University after over 30 years. We hope that as many present and past undergraduates, postgraduates and staff as possible will join us for a grand reunion to celebrate your and our achievements.
This will be an informal event. Please respond to var name = "rjsuthren"@; document.write ("Roger Suthren"); by e-mail as soon as possible (and by 31 May at the very latest) if you plan to attend . The venue will be fixed once we have an idea of numbers. We hope to see many old friends. Please pass this message on to others you are in contact with.
Stop press (24 May): 115 people will definitely be attending: a broad spread, including graduates from the early 1980s right through to the current final year.

172. James Hutton: Theology And Geology
Describes the sometimes forgotten Christian influence on Hutton's work.
http://www1.umn.edu/ships/religion/hutton.htm
SHiPS Resource Center
for Sociology, History and Philosophy in Science Teaching James Hutton is best known for expanding our notion of the age of the Earth. His observations of geological strata that had been uplifted on edge and eroded away, and then capped with yet more layers, revealed the presence of whole other "worlds" before us. We could no longer measure the history of the planet in terms of ordinary human lifetimes, nor even in terms of the appearance and disappearance of great civilizations. We had to adopt a whole new, geological time scale. For many, Hutton laid the foundation for dispelling religious misconceptions about a young Earthespecially as professed in some Christian traditions. Yet Hutton himself was a devout Christian. Moreover, his conclusions were strongly guided by his theology. Indeed, for Hutton, a beneficent Christian God was the major reason for believing that the world was extremely old. Somewhere, we have inverted the role of religion in Hutton's work. Nowhere do we misinterpret Hutton more deeply than in the meaning of the closing image to his great geological work, The Theory of the Earth. Hutton concluded poetically that the Earth offered "no vestige of a beginning,no prospect of an end." By today's reckoning, Hutton was asserting the unimaginably extended, "deep" time frame of an ancient Earth. But for Hutton, it was quite literal: he saw no beginning and no end to the Earth; the planet was timeless. Why?

Geology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Geology (from Greek ge- logos , "reason")) is the science and study of the earth , its history, and the processes that shape it. The word was first used in this sense by in the year and introduced by in the year as a fixed term. [An older sense of the word is first mentioned by Richard de Bury in . He used it to distinguish between earthly and theological jurisprudence.] Geology is also sometimes used about similar studies of other bodies of the solar system. However, specialised terms such as selenology (studies of the Moon), areology (of Mars), etc., are also in use. Table of contents showTocToggle("show","hide") 1 History

can be divided into 5 provinces based on geologic landforms. They are:
  • the tilted granitic fault blocks of the main mountain ranges,
  • the broad flat coastal plains,
  • the isolated coastal mountains,
  • the fault block mountains and alluviated valleys of the Basin and Ranges, and
  • the plateaus of the Volcanic Tablelands. The first three provinces are part of the Cretaceous collision of the North American and the Pacific Plate. The last two provinces are directly related to the opening of the Gulf of California.
  • The tilted granitic fault blocks are represented by the Sierra Juarez and the Sierra San Pedro Martir which form the main granitic ranges of the State of Baja California and the Sierra La Laguna of the Cape region mountains. The main rock types in this province are granitic, metamorphic, and metavolcanic.
