Introduction
The use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is expanding today as its cost decreases and its capability increases. Because GIS is a technical tool, it employs a specialized terminology. This glossary defines many terms for new and prospective users of GIS. No attempt is made to define commonly used computer-processing terms or terms associated with other types of information systems. A list of suggested references at the end of the glossary will direct the reader to additional sources of information on GIS terminology. This publication, which defines many of the terms associated with GIS, is one part of a three-part series. Another publication, "The Basics of Geographic Information Systems" (Queen et al. 1993), provides a basic understanding of GIS. The last piece in the series, "Introduction to Data Analysis Using Geographic Information Systems" (Falbo et al. 1991), describes analysis functions in detail. Please Click on the Section of the Glossary You Want to Read.

Hunter College-CUNY, New York, New York, USA Download Article Geographic information systems are powerful automated systems for the capture, storage, retrieval, analysis, and display of spatial data. While the systems have been in development for more than 20 years, recent software has made them substantially easier to use for those outside the field. The systems offer new and expanding opportunities for epidemiology because they allow an informed user to choose between options when geographic distributions are part of the problem. Even when used minimally, these systems allow a spatial perspective on disease. Used to their optimum level, as tools for analysis and decision making, they are indeed a new information management vehicle with a rich potential for public health and epidemiology. Geographic information systems (GIS) are "automated systems for the capture, storage, retrieval, analysis, and display of spatial data"

    NHGIS
The National Historical Geographic Information System (NHGIS) is a project to create and freely disseminate a database incorporating all available aggregate census information for the United States between 1790 and 2000. The NHGIS consists of three major components:
    • Collect and enrich historical and contemporary U.S. Census summary data. Incorporate these data into a Geographic Information Systems framework. Create a web-based system for access to both census data and the metadata.
The great bulk of the United States summary census data exist in machine-readable form, but they are largely inaccessible. Approximately 670 gigabytes of data covering the period 1790 through 2000 exist or are in preparation, but they are scattered across dozens of archives and stored in incompatible formats on CD-ROM, magnetic tape, or paper. Only a small fraction of these data are available on the Internet, and even those offer only primitive documentation an extraction tools. Moreover, census summary data cannot be effectively exploited without clear definitions of each geographic unit, but high-quality electronic boundary files exist only for the 1990 census year. Major funding provided by the National Science Foundation

    79. PostGIS Geographic Objects For PostgreSQL
Spatially enables the server, allowing it to be used as a backend spatial database for geographic information systems (GIS).
    http://postgis.refractions.net/
PostGIS adds support for geographic objects to the PostgreSQL object-relational database. In effect, PostGIS "spatially enables" the PostgreSQL server, allowing it to be used as a backend spatial database for geographic information systems (GIS), much like ESRI's SDE or Oracle's Spatial extension. PostGIS follows the OpenGIS Simple Features Specification for SQL " and will be submitted for conformance testing at version 1.0. PostGIS has been developed by Refractions Research Inc as a research project in open source spatial database technology. PostGIS is released under the GNU General Public License . We intend to continue development as time and resources permit. Our list of future projects includes enhanced technology for data loading and dumping, user interface tools for direct data access and manipulation, and support for advanced topologies at the server side, such as coverages, networks, and surfaces.
    RPMs Released for PostGIS
There are now RPMs available for PostGIS, Mapserver, and all required support libraries, compiled for a number of common Linux distributions. Source RPMs are also available.

Imagery is a powerful visual aid and serves as a source of derivative information such as planimetrics and classification schemes to derive such information as land use or vegetation. If your GIS covers a particularly large area, aerial imagery may not be a practical or economical choice. Satellite imagery is often the preferred choice of imagery for larger regions. More and more choices of satellite imagery are becoming available and the cost associated with its purchase is dropping. Listed here are some of the most prominent sources of currently available satellite imagery and future satellite launches. This guide is meant to be a launching point for searching for and acquiring information about available satellite imagery. Individual choice of imagery will depends on many factors such as resolution, image type and cost. Many of the imagery can be purchased directly from the associated agencies. In addition, there are online sites that also specialize in satellite imagery sales.
