Geodesy
The goal of the Geodesy project is to discover and measure the structure of the web. Web content mining also means looking at the web and trying to discover structure or resources in it. We hope to measure a variety of statistics about the web, its pages, and its evolution over time. We represent the web as a graph where each url (web page) is a node and each link from url A to url B is a directed edge from node A to node B. In addition to measuring properties of the web graph itself, we would like to develop a model that simulates the web and can be used for testing new algorithms that depend on the structure, such as ranking of web pages. Geodesy also continues previous work at SRC aimed at developing strategies and tools for locating information on the web. For example, by measuring the expected shape of the web, we can then spot anomalies in the web graph. The anomalies, in turn, can help us spot spam, find families of related hosts, or develop new models for the web. Previous work at SRC in this area includes: HP SRC Classic Lab

Sea Level Home Hazards of Sea Level Rise: An Introduction by Stacy Archfield Sea level has fluctuated by an order of 100 meters over the last 18,000 years [Michener et al., 1997]. Global sea level can change due to three factors: 1-Change in the volume of the ocean basins, 2-Expansion or shrinking of ocean water due to changes in climate and 3-Periods of worldwide glacial advance and retreat [Davis, 1997]. Human impact has no control over changing the volume of the ocean basins. However, the greenhouse effect can cause the ocean to gather thermal inertia that will heat the continents and slowly melt the polar ice caps, increasing sea level worldwide [Michener et al., 1997]. The effects of sea level rise will be spatially non-uniform since GIA will cause some areas to uplift and others to subside [Gornitz, 1991]. Furthermore, the characteristics of a given coastline are controlled by many different variables, including interactions between lithology, geomorphology, wave climate, currents and storm frequencies [Gornitz, 1991]. Gornitz defines the following terms to be used in talking about coastal hazard assessments: Gornitz also states "sea level rise is a global-scale, long-term hazard, which may, in the long run, inflict greater damage [to a coastline] than that of a hurricane. Eustatic sea level rise over the next century will be the sum of the individual contributors from thermal expansion of sea water and ice melting from alpine glaciers and the polar ice sheets."

    Introduction and Mission
The International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), which was established in 1919, is dedicated to the scientific study of the Earth and the application of the knowledge gained by such studies to the needs of society, such as more rational use of mineral resources, reduction of the effects of natural hazards, and environmental protection. The Union's objectives are the promotion and coordination of physical, chemical, and mathematical studies of the Earth and its environment in space. These studies include the shape of the Earth, its gravitational and magnetic fields, the dynamics of the Earth as a whole and of its component parts, the Earth's internal structure, the hydrologic cycle including snow and ice, all aspects of the oceans, the atmosphere, the ionosphere, magnetopshere, and solar-terrestrial relations, and analogous problems associated with the Moon and other planets. The IUGG has supported collaborative international interdisciplinary research programmes such as the International Geophysical Year (1957-58), the Upper Mantle Project (1964-70), the Geodynamics Project (1972-79), the Global Atmospheric Research Programme (1970-80), and the International Lithosphere Programme (1981-90). A major achievement has been the creation, through the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU), of the World Data Center System, from which the data gathered during these major programmes are available to research workers everywhere.

    What is Space Geodesy?
Space Geodesy comprises of observational and computational techniques that allow the solution of geodetic problems by the use of precise measurement to artificial satellites. The major geodetic problems include the computation of; precise positions, the Earth's Pole position, the Earth's gravity field, and tectonic motion.
    Why Space Geodesy Analysis?
The products of Space Geodesy Analysis are necessary for all satellite-based science and commercial activity. They are essential for developing fundamental geographic data and the precise geodetic framework for national, regional and international geodetic reference frames. Space Geodesy contributes to the understanding of the Earth/Atmosphere/Oceans system. To find out more about the Geoscience Australia Division's Space Geodesy Analysis Centre go here or explore the Space Geodesy Analysis web pages by following the links down the left side of this page.
