Geodesy at Curtin
Geodesy comprises the study of the Earth's shape and gravity field, and provides the scientific basis of precise surveying, navigation, mapping, and studies of the physics and dynamics of the Earth. The Western Australian Centre for Geodesy is part of the Department of Spatial Sciences at Curtin University of Technology . Staff and students in the Centre are active in a diverse range of both pure and applied geodetic research of national and international significance. Our geodetic research programs use state-of-the-art equipment and software, and involve close collaborative links with other universities, industry and government, both in Australia and overseas. The core research areas and strengths of the Centre are in gravity field determination, deformation monitoring, and precise satellite positioning. Further details are available in our Geodesy Brochure (1,443 kB in PDF format).

DEFINITIONS COORDINATE SYSTEMS FIGURE OF THE EARTH DEFINITIONS: Geodesy is the discipline that deals with the measurement and representation of the earth, its gravity field and geodynamic phenomena (polar motion, earth tides, and crustal motion) in three-dimensional time varying space. Geodesy is primarily concerned with positioning and the gravity field and geometrical aspects of their temporal variations. Geoid is essentially the real shape of the earth, without accounting for the topographic features. It is an idealized equilibrium surface. The geoid, unlike the ellipsoid, is too complicated to serve as the computational surface on which to solve geometrical problems like point position. Coordinate System. A reference system for defining points in space or on planes and surfaces with relation to designated axis, planes or surfaces. In surveying and mapping three general types are used: (1.) Plano-polar, in which points in a plane are defined by distance from a specified point along a ray having a specified direction with respect to a base line; (2.) Rectangular, points are defined by distance from two perpendicular axis or three mutually perpendicular planes;

Geodesy What is Geodesy? Geodesy is the discipline that deals with the measurement and representation of the earth and other celestial bodies and their respective gravity fields, in a three-dimensional time varying space. What is Geomatics? Geomatics is the modern scientific term referring to the integrated approach of measurement, storage and display of the descriptions and location of earth-based data, often termed spatial data. These data come from many sources, including earth orbiting satellites, air and sea-borne sensors and ground based instruments. It is processed and manipulated with state of the art information technology using computer software and hardware. It has applications in all disciplines which depend on spatial data, including navigation, geology and geophysics, mining, civil engineering, oceanography, land development and land ownership and tourism. It is fundamental to all the geoscience disciplines which use spatially related data. What is concerned with? Everyday the results of the work of Geomatics Engineers are found around us, from the legal security of your property boundaries, the appropriate location of mobile telephone transmitters, the safe navigation of ships, to the protection of environmental resources. When the questions -what is it, where is it, and how much is there- are asked, the geomatics engineer provides the answer. All decisions that are made by planners, engineers and decision makers regarding the earth, its environment and resources, initially require studies and analyses of models of the earth in the form of maps, plans, earth images and digital information. Geomatics is therefore an activity based on

Introduction
DEOS is dead, long live DEOS! DEOS, now the Department of Earth Observation and Space Systems of the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering , is the result of a major refocussing of research and educational programmes at Delft University. Geodesy and space technology have been added to the existing expertise of DEOS to form the centre for space systems, earth observation and geomathematics in The Netherlands.
Organization
DEOS incorporates the field of spacecraft system integration and design that is essential for the development of earth observation systems. Earth observation sensors are present in satellites and aircrafts, as well as on ground-based and (sub-)marine platforms. DEOS combines space engineering, earth science, and geo-information technology in a unique way to serve society. The research potential and educational expertise of five internationally renowned groups together with one new group led by the first Dutch astronaut Professor Ockels have been synergetically bundled:
