    Laboratory of Isotope Geochemistry
Faculty, staff and students in the Laboratory of Isotope Geochemistry employ naturally occurring stable and radioactive isotopes as well as major element compositions to hydrological and geological questions. Study areas are generallylocal or in nearby hydrologic basins, and problems range from locations and extentof groundwater recharge to sources of chloride in brines. Students learn techniques of sampling and analysis of waters for tritium, radiocarbon and stable isotopes, andtheir interpretation. Recent studies have revealed sites of recharge in the Tucson Basin, and extent of migration of 1960's precipitation in local aquifers. Continuing studies detail the sources of chloride and sulfur in groundwater systems, the origin and evolution of chloride in sedimentary basins, and past solar activity inferred from high-precisionradiocarbon measurements in tree rings. Service analyses for internal and external users include radiocarbon dating, measurement of natural levels of tritium in water, stable isotope analyses of water, carbonates, brines, chloride minerals, sulfide and sulfate minerals.

OVERVIEW
The Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory IGL ) is part of the Geochemistry Laboratories of the Department of Geology. The IGL comprises a set of laboratories for the preparation and isotopic analysis of a wide range of geological materials. These laboratories include separate Mass Spectrometry (2), Chemistry (2), Mineral Separation and Rock Preparation facilities. The IGL began operations in 1991 with the acquisition of a NBS-design single-collector solid source mass spectrometer. In 1992 a Sector 54 mass spectrometer with 7 faraday collectors, was added to the complement of analytical tools. A second mass spectrometry laboratory, shared with the Plasma Laboratory , houses a Nu Plasma multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer that was added in 2001. The mission of the

Geochemistry
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This article is a stub . You can help Wikipedia by expanding it The field of geochemistry involves study of the chemical composition of the Earth and other planets , chemical processes and reactions that govern the composition of rocks and soils , and the cycles of matter and energy that transport the Earth's chemical components in time and space. The most important fields of geochemistry are:
  • Determination of the relative and absolute concentrations of the elements and their isotopes in the earth and on earth´s surface. Examination of the distribution and movements of elements in different parts of the earth (crust, mantle, hydrosphere etc.) and in minerals with the goal to determine the underlying legalities of distribution and movement. Analysis of the distribution of elements and their isotopes in the cosmos cosmochemistry A study of the role of processes and compounds that are derived from living or once-living organisms ( organic geochemistry
