Hydrothermal Vent Geochemistry Hydrothermal circulation occurs when seawater penetrates into the ocean crust, becomes heated, reacts with the crustal rock, and rises to the seafloor. Seafloor hydrothermal systems have a major local impact on the chemistry of the ocean that can be measured in hydrothermal plumes. Some hydrothermal tracers (especially helium) can be mapped thousands of kilometers from their hydrothermal sources, and can be used to understand deep ocean circulation. Because hydrothermal circulaton removes some compounds from seawater (e.g. Mg, SO4) and adds many others (He, Mn, Fe, H2, CO2), it is an important process in governing the composition of seawater.

This research includes detailed field investigations, laboratory studies, development of reactive barriers and other passive remedial solutions, and development of mathematical models to predict the complex geochemical behavior of these systems. We have conducted detailed investigations of mine sites, mine-waste disposal facilities, wetlands, on-site sewage disposal systems and other industrial sites. Laboratory studies often focus on reaction mechanisms utilizing batch and column experiments. Mathematical modelling has focused on the development of fully-coupled reactive transport codes that can account for thermodynamic and kinetic controls on chemical reactions between groundwater and the aquifer material. Remediation research is focused on the development of passive

Mars Pathfinder Science Results The Alpha Proton X-Ray Spectrometer on the rover measured the compositions of nine rocks. The silicon content of some of the rocks is much higher than that of the martian meteorites, our only other samples of Mars. The martian meteorites are all mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks, volcanic and intrusive rocks that are relatively low in silicon and high in iron and magnesium. Such rocks would be expected to form by partial melting of the upper mantle of Mars. The melt rises up though the crust and solidifies at or near the surface. The mafic volcanic martian meteorites, referred to as basalts, are the most common rock on Earth and have also been found on the Moon. Based on the composition of the martian meteorites and the presence of plains and mountains that look like features produced by basaltic volcanism on Earth, geologists expected to find primarily basalts on Mars.
for the bumpy textures is weathered lithic fragments and crystals in volcanic rocks.
Alpha Proton X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS) Note: The compositions plotted in the following 5 figures have been superseded by the results presented in: Rieder, R., et al., 1997, The chemical composition of the Martian soil and rocks returned by the mobile Alpha Proton X-ray Spectrometer: Preliminary results from the X-ray mode, Science, 278: 1771-1774.

Welcome The 6th International Symposium on Environmental Geochemistry will follow on from previous symposia held every three years, the most recent being at Krakow, Poland (1994), Vail, Colorado, USA (1997) and Cape Town, South Africa (2000). The Edinburgh Symposium will bring together geochemists, environmental chemists, biologists, soil scientists, aquatic scientists and medical specialists. Subjects covered include mining, contaminated land, aquatic sediments, peat bogs, ground- water, industrial pollution and waste, air and water quality, the impact of heavy metals and synthetic organic chemicals upon human, plant and animal health, remediation, modelling and analytical geochemistry.

How to Design an Exploration Surface Soil Gas Geochemical Survey: Illustrated by Application Examples from the Hugoton Embayment of Southeast Colorado and Southwest Kansas
...
Dallas, TX

Exploration Technologies, Inc. (ETI) provides innovative geochemical services that are applicable to both the exploration and environmental industries. ETI's geochemical techniques are employed in the petroleum industry to reduce exploration risk and utilized in environmental assessments for accurate and cost-effective site characterizations. EXPLORATION GEOCHEMISTRY
Petroleum exploration surface geochemical surveys can be used to map the light hydrocarbons expressed through microseeps from active petroleum and natural gas reservoirs at depth. The maps, developed from the survey, serve as a guide to identifying prospective areas in both frontier and mature basins. The light hydrocarbons, when surveyed, analyzed and mapped, using ETI's proven techniques and technology, produce a graphic, geochemical picture of the source rock below. This picture shows whether or not a given area contains petroleum source rocks; whether the area is more oil or gas prone; and finally, whether or not the gas is over cooked and non-productive, or the oil too heavy to produce by drilling alone.
