A particular strength is conservation genetics. In the area of Genetics, the Department offers subjects at first, second and third-year levels as part of the science degrees. An honours degree in genetics and a postgraduate diploma are available to graduates of La Trobe and other universities. Masters and doctoral degrees by research are available.

The Cell Cycle
The field of developmental genetics investigates the genetic basis of the changes in form that an organism passes through during its life cycle. One cellular process that is common throughout these changes in form is cell division. The two cell division events that need to be controlled are the entry into the S-phase when DNA is replicated, and the entry into the M-phase when mitosis occurs. In this regard, two timing events need to be monitored by the cell. These are:
  • when to initiate replication (S-phase entry)
  • when to begin chromosomal condensations (M-phase entry) Related to these events are four factors that appear to control the entry into the M-phase.
  • The accumulation of a specific cellular mass is a factor for somatic cells. This is called the mass factor
  • Some cells need to obtain a specific growth rate for mitosis to begin. This is called the growth rate factor
  • The time between successive M-phases appears to be controlled by timer or oscillator genes. This is the

    What is a Wolfdog?
A wolfdog is a cross between a gray wolf and a dogwhat some refer to as a wolf hybrid. The term "hybrid", however, is used differently in the various scientific disciplines. For example, in horticulture, hybrids are formed by humans as crosses of different 'types' of plants; the term is used equally for crosses both among and within species. Conversely, in evolutionary biology, the term "hybrid" is used almost exclusively to describe offspring arising from a naturally-occurring cross between two separate and genetically distinct species. So one might recognize the potential for confusion arising from the use of the word "hybrid" when applied to a wolf/dog cross. It is more appropriate to refer to these animals as wolfdogs. In 1993, the Smithsonian Institution and the American Society of Mammalogists reclassified the dog from its separate species designation of Canis familiaris to Canis lupus familiaris . So, now, the Timber wolf (
