Fluid dynamics
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Fluid dynamics (also called fluid mechanics) is the study of fluids , that is liquids and gases . The solution of a fluid dynamic problem normally involves calculating for various properties of the fluid, such as velocity pressure density , and temperature , as functions of space and time. Applications of Fluid Dynamics
Fluid Dynamics and its subdisciplines aerodynamics hydrodynamics , and hydraulics have a wide range of applications. For example, they are used in calculating forces and moments on aircraft , the mass flow of petroleum through pipelines, and prediction of weather patterns. The concept of a fluid is surprisingly general. For example, some of the basic mathematical concepts in traffic engineering are derived from considering traffic as a continuous fluid.

exists for the publication of original research papers and short communications, occasional survey articles and conference reports on the fluid mechanics of the earth and planets, including oceans, atmospheres and interiors, and the fluid mechanics of the sun, stars and other astrophysical objects. In addition, their magnetohydrodynamic behaviors are investigated. Experimental, theoretical and numerical studies of rotating, stratified and converging fluids of general interest to geophysicists and astrophysicists appear. Properly interpreted observational results are also published.

Introduction
Fluid mechanics studies air, water, and other fluids in motion: compression, turbulence, diffusion, wave propagation, and so on. Mathematically this includes study of solutions of differential equations, including large-scale numerical methods (e.g the finite-element method), although the development of those techniques is more properly in section 65 (Numerical Analysis).

Advances In Computational Fluid Dynamics : Turbulent Separated Flows And Transonic Potential Flows

This web site provides access to a Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering PhD dissertation, by Reece E. Neel, dated 6 June 1997. The dissertation presents computational solutions to flows ranging from incompressible viscous flows to inviscid transonic flows. The viscous flow problems focus on turbulence modeling in the presence of separation; and the inviscid results focus on the development of an unstructured solution algorithm. Bibliographic and abstract details are available in HTML format. The full text of the document is accessible online in PDF format [3.51 Mb]. This title is part of Virginia Tech’s Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Collection (VT ETD).

WORKSHOP ON GEOMETRY, DYNAMICS AND MECHANICS IN HONOUR OF THE 60th BIRTHDAY OF J.E. MARSDEN
August 7-10, 2002
Audio of talks Photos from Workshop Fields Mail List Schedule ... Visitor Information
ORGANIZING COMMITTEE: A. Bloch P. Newton T. Ratiu S. Shkoller ... A. Weinstein OVERVIEW:
The workshop will be organized along the seven main themes of Professor Marsden's work: (1) Geometric mechanics
(2) Fluid mechanics
(3) Elasticity and analysis
(4) Numerical algorithms
(5) Relativity and quantum mechanics
(6) Geometric control theory
(7) Dynamical systems The common thread running throughout is the use of geometric methods which serve to unify these diverse disciplines and help bring a wide variety of scientists and mathematicians together, speaking a language which encourages cross-fertilization. Professor Marsden is a unique figure in this regard as his work has significantly influenced the three distinctly separate communities of mathematicians, physicists, and engineers.
The workshop will bring together the world's leading figures in each of these seven theme areas who will give invited lectures.

GALLERY OF FLUID DYNAMICS One of the most attractive features of fluid mechanics is the beauty of the flows one encounters. Whether one is observing vortex streets, the potential flow around an airfoil or body, shock refraction or diffraction, or waves breaking on a beach the aesthetic appeal of fluid mechanics is impossible to deny. Because of this visual appeal of all things fluid, many people have generated Fluid Flow Galleries; this is my version of the genre. The approach here is to include images and pictures from a very wide variety of areas and to add short explanations and discussions of the physics. This is in keeping with my general view that the pictures are not only pretty, but they are an excellent opportunity to learn something about the frequently invisible world of physics. To get started, just click on the general categories listed below, sit back and enjoy the ride.

Most of the activity within this field at Mechanics Division Univerisity of Oslo , is related directly to the oil activity on the Norwegian continental shelf. The oil industry and the Norwegian Research Council has funded many of the research projects on ocean modelling and prediction of waves and currents. These projects have also provided opportunities for students to participate in project work and several cand scient and dr. scient students have written their thesis on problems related to these projects.
    Tidal models
Numerical simulation models for the tides in the Nordic Seas and the Norwegian continental shelf and coastal waters have been developed through the activity under several projects. The results are published in reports and journal articles and have become widely used by engineers and oceanographers.
    Lee waves and eddies
Studies of three-dimensional lee-wave pattern in the air flow behind isolated islands started around 1976 when high resolution satellite images became available. These images show that under certain atmospheric conditions regular vortex streets and lee-waves develop behind Jan Mayen in the Norwegian Sea. The lee-wave pattern resemble the classical ship-wave pattern. Similar wave pattern were found also behind Bear Island and Hopen in the Barents Sea.
Storm surge models and storm response
Work on the effect of wind and atmospheric pressure on the sea level started in 1972 after the exceptional large and destructive storm surge along the west coast of Norway from Statt to Lofoten 2-3 November 1971. The first numerical model for prediction of storm surges was developed at the institute around 1978. The model was latter adapted for operational forecasting at the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. Studies of wind driven current and storm response have been pursued through the participation in large project as MOMOP (MetOcean Modeling Project) where several graduate students were employed.
