Groundfish Surveys Begin

Posted: May 26, 2004
Groundfish surveys provide important information about distribution, abundance, and age structure of groundfish populations. This week the Center's survey team will start both the Triennial groundfish survey and the West Coast Groundfish Survey. The Triennial survey will sample from Point Conception, CA, to the Canadian border from 30-250 fathoms. The West Coast Groundfish Survey will sample from Cape Flattery, WA to the Mexican border from 30-700 fathoms. Commercial vessels participating in these surveys include the Vesteraalen, Ms. Julie, and the Morning Star. Survey team staff and additional staff from within the Center, as well as from other NOAA Science Centers and volunteers outside of NOAA, will be conducting the first pass of these surveys from the end of May through July. Dr. Eugene M. Burreson
former Director for Research and Advisory Services The investigation of living marine resources of the Chesapeake Bay and the Virginia Sea has been a dominating focus of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science / School of Marine Science for over sixty years. In no active subject area has a continuing commitment to research, education and advisory service been so consistent as in Fisheries Science. Today, the Department of Fisheries Science includes faculty with a broad variety of research interests including: finfish, mollusc, crustacean, shark, turtle and marine mammal biology, pathology, parasitology, genetics, and economics. To these research areas, faculty members bring classical skills in ecology, systematics, statistics, population dynamics, physiology, molecular biology, economics, and more. Scientific information and technical advice based on the experience and expertise of members of the department is provided to the Commonwealth of Virginia , the nation, and the international community on subjects ranging from resource management through vessel operation and product handling to market development.

Fisheries Science
Fisheries Science is multidisciplinary, drawing expertise from the biological, physical, and social sciences. Fisheries scientists study populations and communities of aquatic resources, their responses to exploitation, and changes in environmental conditions, and their management. Research is quantitative and may be either basic or applied. A diversity of faculty talent exists within the University System of Maryland to provide graduate students with a strong education in ecology, biology, and management of fish and invertebrate resources.
The multidisciplinary nature of fisheries science requires broad training in areas that may include ecology, oceanography, aquaculture, economics, mathematics, seafood technology, pathology and diseases, and management science. Students will select a curriculum, with assistance from their Research Advisory committees, to best achieve their academic and professional goals. The faculty recognizes that flexible, yet rigorous, curriculum choices are important for students in fisheries science.
The program in fisheries offers both M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Graduates at either level may expect to find challenging career opportunities. Most career opportunities in fisheries science are in the government and academic sectors, although in recent years private businesses, research firms and aquaculture businesses offer increasingly diverse career choices.
