The Joshua Lederberg Papers
Exobiology
Documents Visuals While at Stanford, Joshua Lederberg was one of the first scientists to coin the term "exobiology" for the study of life outside the atmosphere. Working with famed astronomer Carl Sagan, Lederberg played a large part in establishing exobiology as a scientific discipline. As a consultant to the Space Science Board of the National Academy of Sciences, Lederberg took an active interest in the search for life on other planets, particularly the Mariner and Viking space missions in the 1960s and 1970s that explored Mars for the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Having worked with bacteria his entire professional career, the Nobel Prize-winning scientist (along with Sagan and geneticist H. J. Muller) reasoned that bacteria were likely the only form of life that could survive space's hostile environment. To that end, Lederberg became concerned that future space flights from Earth could inadvertently contaminate and ruin bacterial ecosystems in outer space, or worse, could bring back foreign bacteria that might have a devastating effect on life on Earth. (Such a scenario was depicted in Michael Crichton's book and film The Andromeda Strain.

Perfect Planet, Clever Species: How Unique Are We?

This is an outstanding recapitulation of who we are and how we got that way written by a wise and learned man. William Burger, who is Curator Emeritus at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, begins with our sun and its place in the universe and ends with reflections on human beings and how rare we might be. Along the way he demonstrates that he is well-grounded in a variety of disciplines, including most especially evolutionary biology. I found his insights into the discoveries of... more...

Exobiology and the case for life on Mars
I. Exobiology
definition: Exobiology is the study of life outside that known on today's Earth. As a discipline it is pretty much defined by a funding program with NASA's Space Sciences which includes studies in early life on earth, abiogenesis (origins of life studies) , SETI (the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, and more recently, the study of martian meteorites.
II. the Viking Mission
In the 1970's two very successful NASA missions sent 2 surface landers to Mars. What they found was a desert-like landscape strewn with volcanic ejecta and shifting sands. The Viking landers were equipped for three experiments designed to test for signs of life on the planet's surface. However, since the GCMS found no organic compounds at its detection limits (a few parts per billion), the initial positive results of the Viking experiments soon became moot. A. The experiments

Leading researchers in the area of the origin, evolution and distribution of life in the universe contributed to Exobiology: Matter, Energy, and Information in the Origin and Evolution of Life in the Universe . This volume provides a review of this interdisciplinary field. In 50 chapters many aspects that contribute to exobiology are reviewed by 90 authors. These include: historical perspective of biological evolution; cultural aspects of exobiology, cosmic, chemical and biological evolution, molecular biology, geochronology, biogeochemistry, biogeology, and planetology. Some of the current missions are discussed. Other subjects in the frontier of exobiology are reviewed, such as the search for planets outside the solar system, and the possible manifestation of intelligence in those new potential environments. The SETI research effort is well represented in this general overview of exobiology. This book is the proceedings of the Fifth Trieste Conference on Chemical Evolution that took place in September 1997. The volume is dedicated to the memory of Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam who suggested the initiation of the Trieste conferences on chemical evolution and the origin of life.

SIGNIFICANCE AND STATUS OF EXOBIOLOGY A paper presented at the annual meeting of A.I.B.S., Boulder, Colorado, on August 26, 1964 GILBERT V. LEVIN Hazleton Laboratories, Inc., Falls Church, Virginia ABSTRACT Although there are no direct data on extraterrestrial life, planetary observations and statistical considerations support the possibility of such life. The significance of the questions the “science” of exobiology may answer warrants its active pursuit. These questions range from whether life exists elsewhere to fundamental inquiries in all the sciences. The title of this paper, “Significance and Status of Exobiology,” has been carefully selected. The significance of the term “exobiology” is in dispute and there are those who declare that the subject has no status . The term is of recent origin and is intended to denote the study of extraterrestrial life. The argument arises not only from those normally protesting the adulteration of the English language with newly-coined words but from those who literally interpret the prefix “exo” as meaning “out of, outside, or outer layer.” Some contend that a better term would be “xenobiology” in that the prefix “xeno” connotes “strange or foreign.” Others feel that “biology” is sufficient, for it would encompass extraterrestrial creatures. These arguments may have semantic merit, but “exobiology” has been adopted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and is now a part of the literature. A dispute over nomenclature should not discourage biologists from pursuing the subject.
