The debate about Creationism vs. Evolution rages in the American popular culture. This page hopes to add some light to the debate.
The tension between how people interpret the Bible and what people believe that they have learned through science has been with us for a long time. The fact is, science and the Bible are both needed to find the truth. In the Beginning
Genesis chapter 1 verses 1 & 2 are a partial summary of the creation story. The partial summary gives the reader certain details from a different point of view that will be missing from another version of the story. This is an example of a particular style of story telling sometimes called "oriental" story telling.
After a summary has been given, the story begins again with a more specific retelling in verse 3 with the words, "And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light."
Scientists now believe that the universe began with a "Big Bang." The "big bang" is here in verse three. God released the power of His Word into one point and from there the universe exploded outward.

evolution tunes the content and frequency of genetic variation to enhance its evolvability. evolution of Evolvability. THE evolution OF GENETIC COGNITION.
http://www4.tpg.com.au/users/jes999/gencog.htm
Evolution of Evolvability This paper shows how evolution tunes the content and frequency of genetic variation to enhance its evolvability. Genetic evolution is not random or entirely blind. Genetic systems are like nervous systems and brains—they have been structured and organised by evolution to enhance their ability to discover effective adaptations. (For a more general approach to the evolution of evolvability, see Chapters 8 to 12 inclusive of the on-line book Evolution's Arrow. It examines in detail how evolution itself has evolved. It shows how evolution has discovered new and better evolutionary mechanisms (mechanisms that discover and perpetuate adaptations). The book looks at the evolution of pre-genetic, genetic, psychological, cultural, and supra-individual evolutionary mechanisms It also shows how evolution has progressively improved the evolvability of these mechanisms, and how it can be expected to continue to do so in the future. Chapter 8 is at http://www4.tpg.com.au/users/jes999/8.htm

One week here can change the rest of your life... Find yourself, heal and become whole.
Our dolphin journeys are unique and very special. We focus upon the spiritual level of interaction with the dolphins, encouraging a deep communion and interaction with themexpanding into meditative states while in the water as well as joining them in blissful play and laughter. This is vastly different than what we frequently seepeople chasing them and not respecting that we are entering their home environment, asking to be with them in a sacred way. In joining with the dolphins in their natural habitat, we open to experience all that they have to teach and offer us, and allow them to determine the level upon which they wish to interact with us. The more open we are, the more gifts we might receive! Of utmost importance is our respect for them, as for all sentient beings, allowing them to interact with us in whatever ways they are comfortable.

from Australopithecus to Cro-Magnon
A definitive survey of the the current state of knowledge regarding Human origins, with bibliography.
I must say, though, that even though this survey was written in August of 1997, a brief review of similar sites on the web recently showed me nothing that is as comprehensive, concise, complete and well documented as this. Most information available on the web is outdated, much is innacurate, vague and/or ambiguous. Some pages appear unwilling to adopt or even suggest a position on any issue even remotely controversial. This writer has put forth those theories which he feels are substantially documented, offering alternative viewpoints when warranted. This researcher is both a Lumper and a Splitter. Please give appropriate credit when citing this document and/or its sources. Comments are appreciated, especially new information. Challenges to the positions advocated are welcome, and are best recieved with an authoritative source included, so that I may follow up. An updated version is in progress. The citation links are now working. Thank you to all who made suggestions.

Introduction
This is a guide to recent research on the evolution of cooperation. This is the second such document. The first was compiled by Robert Axelrod and Douglas Dion in 1988. Entries in this bibliography cover the period 1988 to early 1994. For a review of work prior to 1988 see the Axelrod and Dion entry in this bibliography. This guide includes work that makes use of Robert Axelrod's The Evolution of Cooperation (NY: Basic Books, 1984) or earlier work included in that book, such as the biological article by Robert Axelrod and William Hamilton of the same title in Science, vol. 211 (1981): 1390-96. While most of the items included in this bibliography explicitly cite this work, other research which draws heavily on the ideas and themes of Axelrod's approach is also cited here. This bibliography generally excludes work that makes only passing or minor reference to Axelrod. We apologize to authors whose contributions we may have overlooked.

This section compares and contrasts the three main beliefs about origins: Naturalistic Evolution, Creation Science, and Theistic Evolution
Overview:
The media delight in talking about the warfare between evolution and creation science. However, there are not just two conflicting belief systems concerning the origin of plants, animals, humans, the rest of the world and the rest of the universe. There are literally many hundreds of theories: Hundreds of religious views: According David Barrett et al, editors of the " World Christian Encyclopedia " there are 19 major world religions which are subdivided into a total of 270 large religious groups, and many thousands of smaller ones. Among these various faith groups, there are probably at least 500 different creation stories to draw from all different. Creation science: This is a group of about a dozen different belief system which form some of the approximately 500 religious belief systems described above. They are very popular among conservative Christians. They can be divided into two different groups: New Earth creationists form the majority of creation scientists. They believe that the earth, its current life forms, and the rest of the universe were created by God, less than 10,000 years ago. Only very minor changes within various species have happened since creation; no new species have evolved or been created. This belief system is mainly promoted by people who believe in the

"The past only exists insofar as it is present in the records of today. And what those records are is determined by what questions we ask. There is no other history than that" (Wheeler 1982:24). ideas a priori idea et al "An evolution is a series of events that in itself is purely physical,a set of necessary occurrences in the world of space and time. An egg develops into a chick; a poet grows up from infancy; a nation emerges from barbarism; a planet condenses from a fluid state, and develops the life that for millions of years makes it so wonderous a place. Look upon all these things descriptively, and you shall see nothing but matter moving instant after instant, each containing in its full description the necessity of passing over into the next. Nowhere will there be, for descriptive science, any genuine novelty or any discontinuity admissible. But look at the whole appreciatively, historically, synthetically, as a musician listens to a symphony, as a spectator watches a drama. Now you shall have seen, in phenomenal form, a story" (Royce 1892:425).

Evolution
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
This article is about evolution in the biological sense. For other possible meanings, see Evolution (disambiguation)
Evolution is any process of growth or development that entails change. The word stems from the Latin evolutio meaning "unfolding" and before the late 19th century was confined to referring to goal-directed, pre-programmed processes such as embryological development. A pre-programmed task, as in a military maneuver, using this definition, may be termed an "evolution." One can also speak of stellar evolution chemical evolution cultural evolution spiritual evolution or the evolution of an idea . Other kinds of evolution include evolutionary algorithms (which include genetic algorithms ) which attempt to mimic processes similar to biological evolution in a computer program , most frequently as an optimization technique and as an experimental framework for the computational modelling of evolution.

Evolution of Limbs from the Fossil Record and Molecular Biology
from The Evolution Evidence Page
The Hox gene family is present in animals across phyla and has the potential to explain major changes of the bauplan (body plan - the overall layout of the body). Here is a link to a good introductory article on the topic: WHERE DO TOES COME FROM? If you would like much more detailed articles on the ties between the Hox gene family and vertebrate limb development and evolution, see Anterior / Posterior Patterning - An Introduction to the Hox Gene Family Where Did Limbs Come From? (both lectures from a wonderful online course for a Vertebrate Evolution And Development class), Hoxa-13 and Hoxd-13 play a crucial role in the patterning of the limb autopod and two articles from Pediatric Research - Homeobox Genes in Embryogenesis and Pathogenesis and Reconstructing the History of Human Limb Development: Lessons from Birth Defects Regulation of number and size of digits by posterior Hox genes: a dose-dependent mechanism with potential evolutionary implications showed that as the amount of HOX gene product present in mouse embryos was gradually reduced, embryo effects led first to ectrodactyly, then to olygodactyly and then to adactyly (no fingers). Interestingly, the researchers saw that on the way from having five fingers to having no fingers in the embryos, there was a step where the embryos were polydactyl - had more than five fingers. Knowing that the first amphibians were polydactyl (see items E. (Ichthyostega) and F. (Acanthostega) in the figure below), the authors proposed the hypothesis that the changes from polydactyl (more than five fingers) limbs in the earliest amphibians to pentadactyl limbs (having five fingers) in the common ancestor of all more recent tetrapods may have been controlled by changes in the regulation of HoxA and HoxD gene expression. Once again we see the possibility of explaining the observed fossil record by observations of the behavior of Hox genes in a modern organism.

http://pespmc1.vub.ac.be/HISTEVOL.html
The History of Evolution
The basic idea underlying the Principia Cybernetica Project is that evolution leads to the spontaneous emergence of systems of higher and higher complexity or "intelligence": from elementary particles, via atoms, molecules, living cells, multicellular organism s, plants, and animals to human beings, culture and society. This gives us a view of the history of evolution as a kind of progression towards higher complexity (albeit essentially unpredictable, with many side-tracks and dead-ends). Such an encompassing view may allow us to answer the basic questions : "Who are we? Where do we come from? Where are we going to?" (The last question requires an extrapolation of this development towards the future Although the growth of complexity during evolution is not universal (many systems evolve towards higher simplicity), it appears as the most striking factor from a long-term perspective. Most of the time this complexity increase, and evolution in general, occurs rather slowly or continuously, but during certain periods evolution accelerates spectacularly. This results in changes which from a long term perspective may be viewed as momentous events, separating discrete types of organization. Each time a higher level of control or organization has developed we say that a Metasystem Transition (MST) has taken place.
