Dene. Late 1800's. The Ethnology program interprets the culture and history of the indigenous peoples of the world. While the primary emphasis is on First Nations and Metis peoples of the Northern Plains and Subarctic, the collections feature materials from other regions of North America, particularly the western Arctic and Great Lakes, as well as Africa, Australia, and Japan. Objects in the collections date from the mid-1800s to the present. The Ethnology collections are an invaluable resource for a wide variety of people interested in Alberta's history and cultural diversity. Individuals researching family and community history regularly consult the collections, as do university students conducting research projects in the fields of anthropology, history, Native studies, and clothing and textiles. The public school system incorporates Ethnology program materials into its curriculum, and Ethnology staff responds to numerous inquiries about First Nations and Metis cultures from members of the public and cultural heritage professionals. Staff members work in partnership with First Nations and Metis communities on cultural heritage projects, and the Ethnology program manages a summer internship program in Museology for Aboriginal university students. Ethnology program staff played a major role in developing the Syncrude Gallery of Aboriginal Culture Horse mask.

Ethnology
The Ethnology Department's main aim from 1907 to the present had been to study and collect items about the culture of Namibia's indigenous people before the colonial influence began. Urban provisional objects are also collected if information about them is sufficient. The collection contains objects and photographs of the San (Bushmen), Wambo, Kavango, Herero speaking groups, Khoe-Khoen (Naman), Bergdaman (Daman), East-Caprivian groups, Rehoboth Basters, and Tswana. The collection also contains a few objects originating from ethnic groups outside Namibia, e.g. from the Tchokwe and Nyaneka-Nkumbi (Angola); Lozi (Zambia); Maasai (Kenya); Xhosa, Pedi and Zulu (South Africa). The main anthropology displays are in the Ethnology Hall of the Owela display center, and include: Collection and preparation of grass seeds by Daman; Manufacturing and function of rope among the Bushmen; Weapons; Sources of poison for hunting weapons (San); Iron-working among the Thwura; Leather work among the Naman; Musical and sound producing instruments; Clothing and adornments among the Herero; Pottery among the Mbalantu; The cultivation of omahangu; A Ndonga homestead; The Okavango River as an important sources of life for its population; Pipes and snuff-boxes. Pamphlets in German, English, Afrikaans, Oshindonga and in Nama-Gowab are available to guide visitors in the displays.

Ethnology (3,400 objects)
Research Curator: Dr. E.S. Lohse The majority of this collection was donated by private individuals who lived in the Pocatello area around the turn-of-the-century. These collections focus on the Native American cultures of the Great Basin and Plateau areas of North America, and is particularly strong in Shoshonean ethnographic materials (including an excellent basketry collection and extensive photographic archives). Various categories of material culture are represented including household equipment, travel/transportation gear, clothing, and personal adornment. Other materials include a field collection from South America acquired by purchase in the 1950s for comparative purposes.

Ethnological Research

While the Ethnology Collection has served as a source for scholarly research and education at the university for many years, it now shares its resources with the newly developed Alfonso Ortiz Center for Intercultural Studies. In conjunction with community partnerships and collaborative projects the Ethnology Collection provides a valuable cultural resource for the maintenance and revitalization of traditional material culture.
For information on the Ethnology Collections at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology please contact: Kathryn Klein, Ph.D.

Ethnology Curator: Lawson, Barbara
514-398-4086 ext. 4093 The Ethnology Collections of the Redpath Museum include close to 17,000 archaeological and ethnological artifacts. Their geographic scope is global, with the exception of material relating to Canada's First Nations, now part of the McCord Museum. The Redpath holdings are an important national resource and in many cases represent some of the earliest ethnological materials held by North American museums. Archaeological and ethnological artifacts were part of Sir William Dawson's original collection at the Museum, although subordinate in number and emphasis to the natural history holdings. Additional material came to the Redpath from the Natural History Society of Montreal (1827-1926) and McGill's Ethnological Museum (see Lawson 1994, 1999).

"The Robinson House is used as a Yankee hospital. In a visit there this morning, I found 100 of them [Yankees] packed in the rooms as thick as sardines.... The wounds of the majority were undressed, the blood had dried upon their persons and garments, and altogether there the most horrible set of beings it has been my lot to encounter."
