The broad principles that guide research have long been established, and central to these are the maintenance of high ethical standards, and validity and accuracy in the collection and reporting of data. These guidelines should be seen as a framework for sound research practice and for the protection of individual research workers, including both staff and postgraduate research students, from possible misunderstandings. All queries regarding the observance of the guidelines should be directed to the The guidelines are based largely on the Joint NHMRC/AVCC Statement and Guidelines on Research Practice (1997),

Introduction: Student sit at laptops waiting for class to begin. Isolated from other students located in various rooms, these students are able to communicate with each other and the instructor only online. The instructor monitors the students responses and studies how they react to the online environment. Are they able to comprehend the material? Are they distracted by the technical problems? How well do they communicate with her and each other? Live sessions and evaluations will help her gather this information. Studies with human subjects are going on all around campus. They range from basic observation to more direct intervention. In order to protect the participants and the researchers data, all of these studies must obtain the approval of a Departmental Review Committee (DRC) and the Institutional Review Board(IRB). These entities ensure that the investigators observe all ethical policies in regard to their human subjects. Every student, faculty, and staff member who wishes to study with human participants needs approval before the work begins. Your proposal may require additional discussion at a full-board meeting of the Institutional Review Board if your study includes:
  • participants that may feel compelled to participate such as prisoners the use of drugs, including over the counter medication

    RESEARCH ETHICS

    Rationale:
We hope to teach science as a process; to accomplish this we use experimental labs and independent research projects. When we discuss science as a process, we usually present an idealized view which holds that honesty is a necessary basis for scientific endeavor. Recently, the media have reported misconduct and fraud by scientists. A possible consequence is the inference by students that cheating is common among scientists and that there is little connection between what is taught in the classroom and what happens in the "real world." By extension, the body of knowledge developed by honest scientists is also suspect. By evaluating historical instances of misconduct and exploring the ethics involved in honest data analysis, it is hoped that students will begin to understand the consequences of scientific misconduct and the importance of self-regulation within the scientific community.

    ETHICS
Chapter 1 provides a good opportunity for introducing ethics
Discussion may be more productive if you make overheads of tables 1.4 and 1.5.
If you want to discuss ethics in great depth, you may also want to assign Appendix A. After introducing the basic ethical principles, describe studies and have students determine whether ethical principles were compromised. In addition to describing studies and having students determine whether ethical guidelines were compromised, have students think about times where NOT doing research is unethical. For example, shouldn't prison programs, educational programs, speed limits, or new psychotherapies be researched before we are all subjected to their effects? Links of interest include:

In the history of ethics, the term referred to a subset of emotions less violent and less sensuous than passions .
    http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/a/affection.htm
    Affection
In the history of ethics, the term "affection" referred to a subset of emotions which were frequently designated as being less violent and less sensuous than "passions". St. Augustine, as quoted and adopted by Aquinas, says, "Those mental states (motus animi) which the Greeks call pathe , and Cicero calls perturbationes , are by some called affectus or affectiones by others, keeping to the literal rendering of the Greek passiones " (S.T. II.i.Q.22). This equivalence of passio and affectus is still found in Descartes. There is an alternative use in Spinoza, by whom the term affectus is made to cover purely rational sentiments ( Ethics , III. 58 ff). And this alternative application is characteristic of the British moralists, in whose writings the word "affection" occurs frequently. Shaftesbury uses it in the widest sense above. But other writers draw a distinction between affection and passion. For example, Hutcheson does so on the ground that affection does not necessarily involve uneasiness, although passion does. Price distinguishes between the two because of the distinct presence of a sensuous element in passion, which also indicates greater vehemence. According to Gay, passion is the "pleasure or pain arising from the prospect of future pleasure or pain," and affection is "the desire consequent thereupon" ( Dissertation ). Reid defines affections as the "various principles of action in man, which have persons for their immediate object, and imply, in their very nature, our being well or ill affected to some person, or, at least, to some animated being" (
