Background and Module Content
Efforts to improve the health of children depend on clinical investigations that use children as research subjects. Children are a vulnerable population, however, and so are accorded special protection from research risks. Researchers in pediatrics may encounter conflicts between protecting the children who are vulnerable research subjects and developing generalizable knowledge to benefit children as a class. Furthermore, there are many pitfalls for the researcher in carrying out the communication with both parents and children that is required for responsible decision-making about participation by children or adolescents in experiments. There is a long-standing moral and legal tradition that supports parents as the primary decision-makers for their minor children, including the right to make proxy decisions for children about participation in research. Parental decision-making is a critical factor in the study of pediatric research ethics, even though it is recognized that parents, as well as health researchers, may have interests that conflict with the best interests of the child. Today, the legitimate role of the child in decisions about research participation is recognized. The ethical concept of assent provides a framework to assist investigators and parents with efforts to incorporate the views of children who are recruited as research subjects. Assent is analogous to consent where the subject has a reduced capacity to understand the matter to which they are assenting.

Archives WHAT IS ICIE?
This is an academic website on information ethics. It is a platform for exchanging information about worldwide teaching and research in our field. It gives the opportunity to meet each other. It provides news on ongoing activities by different kinds of organizations. And it is free. The success of this website depends on the will of the people interested in this subject to share their knowledge with others. The ICIE was created in 1999 by Rafael Capurro (Hochschule der Medien - Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences, Germany). It started as a small group of friends and colleagues but developed soon into an international and intercultural platform. In 2001 a cooperation agreement was set up with the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe (Germany) which provided a new design of the web site as well as management support. Since 2002 ICIE is taken care of by Rafael Capurro and Thomas Hausmanninger (University of Augsburg, Germany). Furthermore ICIE organises symposia since 2001/2002 and publishes a book series in cooperation with W. Fink Verlag

This kind of research is essential if we are to understand the new kinds of interaction, communication, and collaboration made possible by advanced information technologies. Like any kind of research involving human subjects, however, such research demands careful attention to questions of ethics and human dignity. In conducting research in cyberspace, for example, social scientists frequently observe the behavior of, and interact with, individuals from all walks of life, engaged in the most disparate kinds of work and leisure activities. What precautions should be taken to ensure that the privacy and dignity of these users are respected? Are issues of privacy and dignity in virtual communities significantly different from their non-virtual counterparts? What kind of research activity in cyberspace would constitute a clear violation of professional ethics? Answers to these questions frequently appeal to some set of principles or standards established in response to earlier - and sometimes quite different -contexts or situations. During the War Crimes Trials following World War II, for example, the so-called Nuremberg Code (

Understanding of Science at Oxford University The Tanner Lectures on Human Values , established by Obert Clark Tanner, are administered by the Tanner Foundation at the University of Utah. Their purpose is to advance and reflect upon the scholarly and scientific learning relating to human values. This intention embraces the entire range of values pertinent to the human condition, interest, behavior, and aspiration. The Tanner Lectures are held each year at nine academic institutions in the United States and Europe. Appointment as a Tanner lecturer is a recognition for uncommon achievement and outstanding abilities in the field of human values.
Richard Dawkins, the Charles Simonyi Chair of the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University, delivered the 2003-2004 Tanner Lectures at Harvard University on November 19, 20, and 21, 2003. A powerful and provocative writer, Dawkins' career has been characterized by groundbreaking scientific theory and engaging cultural and philosophical criticism. His two lectures on "The Science of Religion" and "The Religion of Science" attracted a record number of people, making the 2003-2004 Tanner Lectures at Harvard an enormous success. The Tanner Lectures at Harvard are jointly sponsored by the University Center for Ethics and the Professions and the Office of the President.

Report: The ethics of research related to healthcare in developing countries Published: 24 April 2002 - Inquiry: Research in developing countries
Developing countries urgently need research to help relieve the enormous burden of disease that they carry. It is vital that those in wealthy countries, both in the public and private sector, help sponsor this research. But rigorous ethical safeguards must be in place to prevent the exploitation of those who take part in the research.
This Report defines the ethical standards for healthcare research in developing countries. It will provide a framework for anyone who is designing or conducting such research. The Report's recommendations focus on standards of care, consent, ethical review of research and what happens when the research is over.

  • 49. Duties And Deontological Ethics [Internet Encyclopedia Of Philosophy]
Deontological theories are based on moral obligation that an agent has towards another person.
    http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/d/duties.htm
Duties and Deontological Ethics A duty is a moral obligation that an agent has towards another person, such as the duty not to lie. Etymologically, duties are actions that are due to someone else, such as paying money that one owes to a creditor. In a broader sense, duties are simply actions that are morally manditory. Medieval philosophers such as Aquinas argued that we have specific duties or obligations to avoid committing specific sins. Since sins such as theft are absolute, then our duty to avoid stealing is also absolute, irrespective of any good consequences that might arise from particular acts of theft. From the 17th to the 19th centuries, many philosophers held the normative theory that moral conduct is that which follows a specific list of duties. These theories are also called deontological theories, from the Greek word deon , or duty, since they emphasize foundational duties or obligations. We find one of the first clear indications of this view in The Law of War and Peace (1625) by Dutch philosopher Hugo Grotius (1583-1645). For Grotius, our ultimate duties are fixed features of the universe, which even God cannot change, and comprise the chief obligations of natural law. Some moral theorists at the time based their list of duties on traditional lists of virtues.
