COASTAL AND ESTUARINE
SYSTEMS PROGRAM Dr. Martin H. Posey - Program Coordinator ACTIVITIES
Coastal Sounds and Coastal Ocean Contact Person - T he coastal areas of North Carolina are characterized by highly productive sounds, tidal creek estuaries and a shallow coastal ocean region. These areas support economically important fisheries as well as a variety of recreational activities. UNCW is located near a number of tidal creek estuaries which currently are experiencing dramatic development and also is located near the Masonboro Island component of the North Carolina Coastal Reserve Program . This proximity to both developed and protected habitats provides a good opportunity to examine the influence of development on coastal systems as well as the linkages between tidal creek, sound and near-shore ocean environments. A variety of multi-disciplinary projects have been funded by EPA, North Carolina Sea Grant, New Hanover County, private organizations, and other sources to assess the chemical and biotic status of these systems, trophic interactions, effects of development, and fisheries dynamics. Let us introduce you to the specialized habitats and inhabitants of barrier islands. T he C ape L ookout E nvironmental E ducation C enter seeks to provide children and adults with age-appropriate, research-based programming about barrier islands, the marine ecosystems surrounding them and their connections to our past, present and future. CLEEC lies within the boundaries of Cape Lookout National Seashore, a chain of magnificent, pristine barrier islands located off the coast of North Carolina near Beaufort. Sanctioned by the National Park Service, CLEEC is the only Environmental Education Center in North Carolina to offer camp participants the adventure of an extended stay on an undeveloped barrier island.

The Estuarine and Ocean Ecology (EOE) Program researches links between natural fluctuations in climate and estuarine and oceanic processes that affect distribution, abundance, growth, and survival of anadromous and marine fishes in Pacific Northwest coastal estuaries and marine waters. The abundance of many coastal fishes is related to variations in climate conditions, but this relationship is poorly understood. By focusing on ecosystem studies, researchers are able to examine the causal connections among components of the ecosystem (habitat characteristics, climate-driven estuary and ocean conditions, plankton production, and fish community structure). Through these studies, researchers expect to gain better understanding of the control of coastal resource production, make better predictions of resource status, and better assess the effects of human management on these systems.

Ecology
May, 2000 by James E. Byers
JAMES E. BYERS [1] Key words: Batillaria; Cerithidea; competitive exclusion; consumer-resource interactions; diatoms; exploitative competition; indirect effects; interspecific competition; introduced species; mud snails; non indigenous species; resource conversion efficiency; salt marshes. INTRODUCTION Invasions of ecosystems by exotic species are increasing, especially in aquatic environments (Drake et al. 1989, Carlton 1992, Carlton and Geller 1993, Lodge 1993, Mills et al. 1993, Ruesink et al. 1995, Lafferty and Kuris 1996, Cohen and Carlton 1998). Understanding the mechanisms that lead to the success of exotic species will provide predictive power for future invasions and insight for the management of presently invaded systems. Several authors have stressed the importance of a mechanistic understanding of invasions, calling for experiments delineating the interactions between native and exotic species (Wootton 1994a, Grosholz and Ruiz 1996, Petren and Case 1996). Such information would enhance our understanding of traits of successful invaders, and the conditions under which these traits promote invasion.

Coastal and Estuarine Overview Cawthron’s coastal and estuarine group includes leading New Zealand marine and environmental researchers, funded from FRST’s Public Good Science Fund (PGSF) or the new Marsden Fund for fundamental science. The team also includes scientists or technical staff who have come to Cawthron from Regional Councils or the private sector. Our range of backgrounds allows us to perform multidisciplinary studies, gives us a practical approach to problem solving, and provides a balanced perspective on resource management issues. This team has played a pivotal role in providing specialist scientific expertise to numerous clients over recent years. We currently provide expert advice to clients on: Aquaculture: resource assessment, impact studies
