Research Specialisation MARINE estuarine ecology. Australia has a diverse range of marine ecosystems, spanning tropical to polar waters.
http://cem.ecu.edu.au/marine-estuarine/welcome.html
Research Specialisation:
Australia has a diverse range of marine ecosystems, spanning tropical to polar waters. The majority of these are in good condition, yet wherever urban populations occur there is degradation. The marine and estuarine research group focuses its research on documenting, understanding and managing those impacts, from the effects of aquaculture on south coast temperate seagrasses to the effectiveness of no-take zones in the sub-tropical Ningaloo Reef Marine Park. Our research takes a process-oriented approach, based on the premise that sound management requires an understanding of the processes operating in marine systems. A large proportion of our current research focuses on seagrass ecosystems , which serve as a model for marine systems in general. These projects examine processes occurring within seagrass meadows and the linkage between these and other ecosystems. Other areas of specific interest include: techniques for the propagation of seagrasses and evaluation of ecological function in restored meadows; determining the role of key habitats for fish species; and examining the life history parameters of economically important

Internships / TA's Estuarine Ecology Internship - Portugal This internship provides the opportunity to participate in applied ecological research on an estuary in south-west Portugal, which faces environmental threats on a number of fronts (including tourist development and recreation pressure). The A Rocha Christian Field Study Centre coordinates surveys under the direction of the scientific director, Will Simonson. The internship will be of three months to one-year duration and is available for a highly qualified graduate in one of the following: estuarine ecology, botany, or zoology. Interns will also have the opportunity to participate in the wider ministry of the centre to students, and will be expected to take part in the varied tasks involved in running the centre. Au Sable Institute will meet international travel costs and A Rocha will provide accommodation. The intern will be assisted to raise support for the stay at A Rocha by material from A Rocha and from Au Sable. Interested persons should apply to the Au Sable Institute Registrar Office. Contact

Fall 97 Sources of Sediment within an Estuary Freshwater sources Freshwater sources of sediment within an estuary (what is an estuary and why are they important) http://www.gem.co.za/enviro/43.htm include the rivers of the world, in fact the rivers of the world discharge 35 trillion tons of water to the oceans every year. (Hunt). The continents are being slowly eaten away by watersheds. (Find out more about watersheds) http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~gries/watershd.htm The amounts of material carried dissolved in streams, or swept along as suspended sand or mud, down sound impressive when compared to the volume of water. The average river carries only about 140 parts per million dissolved material and perhaps 500 ppm solid particles. Each gallon of water carries only one-fiftieth of an ounce of dissolved matter and four-fiftieths of an ounce of sand and mud, but these add up to around twenty-three billion tons of continental material carried to the seas each year-more than four hundred tons of each square mile of land surface. Delta Formation (figure 1)
(Hunt) Delta Sedimentary Structures (figure 2) (Hunt) At the mouth of the Mississippi River, lies a huge delta with sediment transported by the river. From the barrier inland along the coast, and reaching 10 to 60 miles inland, lies 6.5 million acre wetland complex estimated to account for 40 percent of the marsh ecosystem of the United States. (Finlayson) In the name of flood control dikes have been built along the banks of the Mississippi, and out on the delta to stabilize the shifting river mouth. In order to maintain constant open shipping channels sediments are dredged out. The river sediments that once settled on the plains are now carried far out into the Gulf of Mexico where they drop into deep water and no longer settle out on the delta wetland communities. Natural compression and organic decay are causing old sediments to subside, and sea levels to rise. Unfortunately, this is causing a loss of as much as 39 sq. miles of wetlands each year. (Finlayson)

Estuaries and the lands surrounding them are places of transition from land to sea, and from fresh to salt water. Although influenced by the tides, estuaries are protected from the full force of ocean waves, winds, and storms by the reefs, barrier islands, or fingers of land, mud, or sand that define an estuary's seaward boundary. Some familiar examples of major estuaries include San Francisco Bay, Puget Sound, Chesapeake Bay, Boston Harbor, and Tampa Bay. Salt Marshes are one typical habitat type occurring commonly in estuaries. Salt marshes are particularly important because they are among the most productive habitats on earth and are home to a wealth of plant and wildlife species. Salt marshes are technically wetlands, but are included here because they are a dominant component of many estuaries.
